    Oil filter housing leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My S4 developed an oil leak that apparently has come from a “crack” in the oil filter housing. I had the oil and filter replaced at the dealer 2500 miles ago as per routine. I have never in 32 year of driving seen a cracked oil filter housing. I am suspecting that the dealer tech over tightened the oil filter cap when replacing the filter 2500 miles ago. The leak is not large and took time to travel through the engine compartment ti where it began to leave a spot in the drive way last week. I live in SoCal, so it is not likely a weather issue.

    Any thoughts?

I swore up and down I had a leak from here on my B8 but when I got the supercharger off to do other things I looked all around and it was dry. Timing cover leaks can look like they're coming from the same spot. I would clean all the oil off the top of the engine and wait and see if you can spot it. I had to sit on top of the engine to see under the housing.

I've also heard of people not properly installing the 2 o-rings into the filter cap. But you'd see oil running down the underside of the housing.

    Haven't been underhood in a B9 but I'm assuming they're vastly similar.

It isn’t the seals, but the housing itself. I will get further details and share. Basically, I think the tech may have damaged the housing during the last oil change, as the dealer is the only group to have ever touched this component. I don’t want to pay for the repair if they caused it.

I’d bring it straight to the dealer that did the work. The cap is supposed to be torqued to 20 lbs I believe.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit that a tech did this.

That's a real bummer. Hope you can get it resolved in your favor.

So the oil filter housing “element” is what failed. The round part that holds the filter was fine and reused with new seals. The “element” that the round part sits in “warper” allowing the seal between it and the engine block to leak oil. The element is a squarish block made of plastic.

It was noted that my car already had the “upgraded” part that was supposed to address similar failures on earlier cars (mine is a Sep. 2018) build).

The dealer and Audi NA meaningfully helped out.

So the real question now is when will there be an aftermarket aluminum replacement part?
