    APR Open Intake vs Closed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Planning to go APR stage 1 plus when Black Friday deals hit next month. Looks like the APR carbon intake is very cheap when purchased with their 4”inlet. Had trouble finding reviews. Looking for opinions vs the Uni intake. I know closed will have a slight power advantage but for stage 1 plus will it really matter? This is my DD so probably won’t go past stage 1+. Thanks!

I have the Apr intake and inlet. Both had issue. The inlet had too short of bolts and thus came loose over time. They have since fixed this I believe. The intake has a very odd method of securing in place and ended up just using black zip ties. Can't say I felt any major power change from the intake on 93 file. Maybe adds 10 hp on e85 file up top. Don't really care for the sound of the open intake. I prefer exhaust noise over intake noise

I went with the AWE Tuning closed intake, and that can turn into the open anytime I want. Beautiful intake, no fitment issues.

Yes, that is true. My '19 RS3 is in the shop right now getting it installed. APR only allows certain parts to be installed for the powertrain to be covered by them and those parts must be APR. I'm getting the Intercooler, turbo inlet, ECU, and TCU. I'm staying with the stock intake because it's a great piece as it is, maybe a K&N drop in.

I felt the intake made a decent difference going from APR inlet/upper pipe with stock box to APR to the APR full kit.

It is a weird fitment and the bolts were to were bad on the earlier kits but I have had no issues since Igor the new bolts.

If you aren't chasing time slips, I wouldn't worry about closed vs open, you will gain over stock air box and you will remove restrictions.

APR 4" intake and inlet. For the money it looks ok to me. Got used from audizine forum member so far it is been great. weird fitment though... No issues. Running Uni stage 1+ 93 or E85. Track Night with SCCA.. Dragstrip trips. Just make sure installer is not over torqueing the coupler/clamp bolts and you know carbon fiber tube might crack..

I am going to be playing with the AWE setup.. I want to play around with the theirs.. I want to start with just the Uni 4inch inlet and the back 4.5 inch pipe attached to the stock air box and see what it does. The area of restriction is the inlet and the rear pipe... I’ll try to post some more info once I do it, but I am traveling a fair amount the next four weeks so not sure it would be before Thanksgiving.

OK I hate to be this guy but I wouldn’t deal with APR in general... I would just go Uni stage 1+ and be done with it.. And I have APR stage 1 now currently.. Did that because my dealership did the tune and takes it off for any work.. Which is nice but APR’s upgrading path is a scam basically and it’s a mess with them discontinuing stage 2 tune and DP..

This is my DD so I’m thinking I’ll stick with stage 1+ and the APR dealer is 5 mins from me. Stage 2 for 93 octane makes barely any difference so no big loss with them getting rid of stage 2 for me. Sounds like they fixed early bolt/fit issues on the intake and inlet. I was thinking about AWE open intake but not sure there’s any advantage with the extra price compared to APR.

Personally looking at the AWE Shorty, just looking for a bit more noise and improved throttle response. Will tune once the car is retired from daily duties.

I DD my RS3 as well.. Started with Stage 1 and it now feels slow as hell, so now it’s upgrading to another stage. With that in mind I am wanting a system I can expand or run a open/closed settup based on what I have on the car. Plus it’s a 4.5 which is larger than most anything on the market currently. Again just my opinion and experience from previous cars and builds.. Buy the parts that will fill multiple stages/levels of modification rather then putting all your eggs in one basket.

Nice to have the ability to do stage 3 but doubt I’d be tempted by that. APR lowered the price of their tunes by 30% today too!

Ever since they discounted their stage two software and downpipe....it’s been downhill since.
