My Audi S5 b8.5 3.0t Issues, on-going fixes and troubles.

    Hey all,
    Lurker, buyer, researcher...

I have been working on Audi's, BMW and other Euro for about 20 years. I recently (Feb 2020) bought an Audi S5 B8.5 for a good deal. It was stock, never really drove hard (friend of mine in a financial bind) and seemed like a great car. I traded him my Audi A3 Quattro plus some cash. Brought it home and started the search for what I should do. Here is what I opted to do:

Custom 2.5" exhaust - I have my own shop with lift, welders, plasma, etc etc.
IE stage 2 dual pulley tune with DSG
    IE Dual Pulley
Custom Intake, modifying the stock box to have better flow and a Pipercross filter and ECS Carbon tube
MercRacing Heat Exchanger with a Meziere water pump wired into stock with a relay.
Upgrade all coils and spark plugs.. Bosch coils with 9 series Iridium (recommended by IE)

I get all this ordered and or done at the shop and begin the process of enjoying. car runs great before and no errors.. I put about 1k miles on it before the work begins.

I put all the work on and it goes without a hitch.. thank you Audi for making this easier to work on then my A3.. it was surprisingly easy..

I put on about 1k more miles and I start getting an EPC light and check engine light. I use my OBDEleven and get misfire on cylinder 6.. sometimes with 4 and sometimes with 3 but always with 6. So I decide I will go back to stock plugs.. About 300 miles later I get EPC and misfire on 6.. Never 3 or 4 anymore but always 6. But never says anything about fuel

I see 6 is usually related to the intercoolers in the SC so I decide to look into ordering them.. Not a horrible price but I will check with my Tech Friend and see what he knows and what is good in the ways of this. He says he has a brand new Supercharger at his house if I wanted it for $600.. Says it was a customer that got into an accident and the insurance company totaled it out with only 750 miles. I get it asap and put it on while replacing all seals and o-rings etc. I go out and boom the EPC light comes on and Check engine light.. I get a misfire 6 but I also see using VCDS that I have a Low Fuel pressure regulation P310B..

Ok, so I decide I will replace the LPFP, HPFP and do the Autotech upgrade. I get this done and boom no more fuel errors but I get an EPC at about 4k rpms driving only and I can reset it by turning it off and then back on.. But if I go above 4k rpms it sputters and boom EPC comes on.. if I check with OBDEleven it says cylinder 6 misfire but not triggering a check engine light.

I wonder if anyone has had this? I recently hit a piece of semi truck tire as it blew out right in front of me in flowing traffic with no options so I have to replace my bumper, radiator and core support.. No leaks from coolant or anything.. But as I drove home licking my wounds the Accessory belt broke and there was a small coolant leak.. My thoughts were the aux water pump was pumping and the water pump wasnt so there is somewhere it could come out. I am going to replace a lot of the coolant lines and hoses to be safe. Maybe the water pump too. so I have the engine completely accessible as the front end is completely off.

I searched and searched about people having sputtering but they never mentioned they got an EPC.. I did check the intake ports when I had the supercharger off and they look exceptionally clean. no carbon build up at all. In fact number 6 looked way too clean compared to the others. but then again so did 3.

I am waiting on my BK Motorsports bumper (cheaper than stock) to come in and a few other parts as well since I am going to do some coolant line replacements etc.

I'm happy with my RS5 look BK-Motorsports bumper and grill too. Have you ran a video camera into #6 cylinder to see what it looks like compared to the others? Possibly a bad injector, age is as much a factor as miles. I know it is pretty much only #6 but what gap are you running on the plugs? I run .026" with a stage 2 tune. I know others have had misfires running the stock gap.

Thanks Hahn. Definitely looking forward to the BK Motorsports bumper.

I have not ran a borescope yet. I have though about it and have a decent one.
Compression was good. All 6 were within 3psi.

I will be spending the weekend in the shop. Gives me a good chore to run the borescope into it. I definitely was looking into injector possibilities but I appreciate your input. I will try it out.

Kind of funny. I had a misfire on my A3 and changed so many things out. Coils, plugs, cam follower, HPFP etc. That little PITA was actually a rocker arm. Not a terrible job but damn. Do I have this luck with Audi's? Lol.. I am starting to look at M4s now.. won't get rid of the S5. Just thinking I want to sell my Jeep lol.

Have you done the old school method of swapping coils, plugs, injectors... to see if misfire changes cylinders?

Yeah, it never moved. As I stated i have went through 3 sets of different plugs. But not stock yet. Gonna try those next. I am also on my second set of coils. Came with stock, I tried Denso and now I am trying the Bosch.

Might well be the injector. I have the supercharger off so I can pull an injector pretty easily. Especially with the front end off the car. Service mode.. hahaha. Nah, I will just take the whole front off. Lol

I had multiple misfires occasionally after going to Stg2. Would always reset after shutting the car down but with the right temp and running it hard they would come back most of the time. Of all things I traced it down to a set of NGK plugs I bought on Amazon, they were counterfeit. NGK has a full page on their website dedicated to determining if their plugs are genuine or Chinese counterfeit's. Bosch has a page dedicated to many of their sensors too although their Sparkplugs are not as widely counterfeited as NGK so I went with Bosch and things are all good now.
Word of warning, never buy Bosch or NGK parts on Amazon or EBay (the worst for counterfeit parts).

Good to know! I got most of my parts through ECS or Napa.. Napa mostly because it is a huge hub/warehouse and is only a mile away from my shop. I will be doing the borescope and might just pull the number 6 injector and flow test it..can't hurt.

I'll keep you posted. Thanks fellas

Sounds like the last pieces of that puzzle are the injectors and any fuel rail/connection leading up to them. K.I.S.S. She needs air, fuel, and spark. You checked spark and air thoroughly, has to be fuel. Unless, your ECU isn't consistently firing that coil.. check wiring harness/connector? Contact cleaner on everything, ohm it out, etc. etc. I think you can be pretty confident that your coils, sc, and plugs are working.

Might thoughts exactly. It was my next plan of attack. Figured with the fuel upgrades and ignition attacked. Next step is the injectors. I dreaded it though lol. Those little suckered are tight fitting and compared to most cars. Expensive. But the rabbit hole doesn't end lol..

Got the injectors out today. I am going to have all six refurbished and tested by a local company. Thought about buying all 6 new.. but... this local guy, in business for 26 years says no injector goes out. They just need to be cleaned and refurbished. So I think I will give it a shot.

What I noticed is pooling of coolant in the 6 and 5 injectors. I also noticed the 5 was caked with burnt coolant in the 5 intake chamber and valves. I cleaned them out with small screwdrivers and a pick tool (closed of course). I have a huge shop vac that I created a straw like tube hooked up. It was able to get them very clean. I cleaned all 6.
I cleaned out the area by the PCV. I had a bit of coolant there. I think it was from the old supercharger since the new one has brand new intercoolers.

I had issues with heat soak prior to my upgrade to a new heat exchanger. Running stage 2 dual pulley is a bad idea to do without the better heat exchanger.

Also noticed something weird in the intake runners (between the supercharger and the heads). Number 6 and three have these weird cracks in them. I will take pics tomorrow.

Anyway here are some pics from today.

1st is of the engine tore down.
    20201017_150811.jpg

2nd is of the number 6 valve chamber
    20201017_150828.jpg

3rd is of the number 5 valve chamber
    20201017_150832.jpg

4th is of the number 4 valve chamber
    20201017_150835.jpg

5th is of the intake runner off and everything cleaned ready for the injectors installed again.

Nice to have someone local like that. More often than not I see these being refurbed and sold on ebay but you don't know if they'll back them if they fail. Looks to me like you could have found your issue. Keep a close eye on that coolant leak situation just in case. Intercoolers are new but doesn't mean that the seal worked when you put them in.

I love watching someone else tear these things down because I know I'll have to do it someday too.

Found a local company that will rebuild the injectors (some reason they call it this when it truly is just deep ultrasonic cleaning).. Going to put new seals, and everything on them for a damn damn good price. Taking them to the place today.. Seem to be nice folk and have very good reputation/track record.. 3 day turn around so, this weekend is gonna be a busy one. Injectors, Bumper, coolant system rebuild and putting everything back together lol.. Hoping this is the end of the maintenance/hearts and flowers phase and I can get back to doing my methanol system, throttle body upgrade and a few other small modifications..

Anyone have any experience with the P3 Vent gauges? I use torque pro on my phone for the Intake Air Temperature but wants something a little better.. I thought about getting a RSNav Android unit to have connected for torque/OBDEleven/Ross-tech mobile but.. I am not sure I want a bigger unit in the car.. not decided yet on that.. But I do like the P3 gauge..

How much do they charge to clean all 6 injectors?

Not a bad price at all, right now they are upgrading their software for the internal camera system to show customers the internals.. which is a nano-camera technology (pretty cool), that will show the spray pattern etc. . but since that is down they normally charge $25 per injector which I was ready to pay then the guy told me that since he cannot provide me pictures the price is $15 per injector. Now that is for the cleaning and for the new seals etc. it would be $35 per injector. So all in all.. MUCH BETTER than buying new ones. Now will they be as good as new.. that will remain to be seen in about 3 days.. lol.. But he did assure me that if I have any issues after rebuild, he will gladly warranty them up to a year. Then the software will be up and running.. With that said, he said if he has any issues with any of the injectors I can easily replace that or the bad injectors with new and the rebuilt ones will be "Good as New" and I can use the good as new ones. Makes it affordable in all realms.

Be a good thing to check. I would recommend this company and could refer you to them but... I will wait till I am finished, their service is complete and I have a few miles of testing to do so. Just prefer to refer a tried and true service before I say they are awesome or not lol. But, they did say they have done quite a few Audi, VW and Porsche services including the Lamborghini V10 in Audis. So I feel confident, but. For anyone's sake. I will wait. But search none-the-less. You never know.

I have seen this gauge, I like it. I just want a more OEM style install.. Do you have yours in front of the drivers tweeter location? This gauge has definitely piqued my interest for sure.. Maybe there is a better place then I have seen people install it (in front of that tweeter on the dash).. honestly, the only thing I liked about the P3 gauge was the fitment in the vent pod.. And only because I have an extra vent setup. PO had one of the slats missing lol, which ironically is perfect for that P3 setup.

Please do tell me the things you love about the gauge.. Thanks S5Black

I mounted mine on the steering column with a mount from ECS. It has IAT. voltage, clutch pressure. coolant temp, oil temp, boost pressure and I may be forgetting 1 or 2 readings.

Nice man. Thank you!. I think i am going to look a little harder into this option as I like the clutch pressure. I assume it is for DSG?

Decided this evening to pull the PCV / oil separator just due to two factors.

    1. There was pooling around it. Not likely the new intercoolers since I changed all seals and orings. I also checked the heater core tube and seal.. both looked great but ordered a new seal anyway.

    2. It was exposed with everything removed

Honestly it is for a piece of mind. But damn.. the parts are plentiful with this phase and hopefully the car gods can shine on me and this will be the last I do maintenance wise for a while. Have been considering a methanol setup.. any thoughts out there?

Worried a little about the Podi gauge pod. They still have a site but when I try to order it online keeps saying they cannot ship my address.. lol.. Everyone ships to my address.. Even china lol.. Gonna call them and see what the deal is. Some say they are not in business anymore. I really hope the are. I like that pod. the alternative is a vent on like the P3 but made for 52mm gauges.. Just wont get it till mid November.

I think the S logo is extra, not sure. Visibility is great and does not block the instrument panel.

Yeah what an awesome place. Theynare doing a carbon fiber face with s logo for me. Spoke to Podi too. They haven't had stock for 8 months and have no idea on another production run. So I opted for a left ac vent from ebay that is good. Hoping for the best. Because I am not keen on the defrost vent one from AeroForce and their one by the MMI doesn't work for me as I have the RSNav S3 10.25 android unit. So I really hope all works out with the AC vent gauge. That vent is worthless for my car. I almost opted for the center vent below the MMI but I have a pretty cool phone holder with QI charging mounted right in the middle of the two vents. So I just didn't want it there and that vent is my best vent for me the driver. Lol

Got the injectors in. Guy did a phenomenal job they looked just like my spare brand new one I had.

I only got it to start and boom. My bad luck struck again. My crank pulley, which in the beginning, I stated my belt had broke and I had some coolant smoking. Well it had broke apart. Become separated. Wow, FML. Lol.

Anyway I was lucky a local guy was selling a Fluidampr for my car with a 187mm pulley attachment for the supercharger. The universe can be good too. It was what my dual pulley upgrade was.

Anyone want to buy an ECS upgrade crank pulley upgrade lol?

When she started. She was purring. But that was short lived. Tomorrow I will put the Fluidampr on and get this girl back on the road hopefully. Still waiting on the bumper, aeroforce gauge and my RSNav S3.. then I will be done a for a while lol

Hahahaha! Right! The compression on the engine was too perfect to give up lol. I have build many different engines man. Even this old 74 fiat 124 Spider. Man that half Ferrari v8 engine was fun. Even had two cylinders that were really low compression. Just rebuilt it and restored the entire car for a $10k profit.
I have loved the S5 ever since they face-lift them in 2013.
But I will say, the one thing that I don't like is the price of parts. Man my BMW M3 didn't cost this much. For example, alternator was $280 for a BMW one.. $700 for an Audi one.. ouch.

Guess this is just prepping me for my next dream car. Bentley Continental GT lol.

I am sure once this is done. I will be good for a while. These engines are extremely easy to work on, I do have to say. I would be comfortable rebuilding one of them. Really curious about an intake manifold I can use to dump the supercharger and go turbo. Would love to build the bottom and top end for turbo.

I would assume bmw would be more or about the same to fix.
I really want to know what the exact cause of the issue or issues. Did it turn out to be the injectors?

The interesting part to me was multiple issues at once.
I did some replacement of parts for things not broken but just because I was there.
I had a misfire on 6 and that injector was the culprit. The guy said it was caused by heatsoak and needed to be ran through the cleaning three times.

The crank pulley was something I had happen to cause me to have the car towed to my shop. Didnt know it was the crank pulley at the time. Had thought it was just the belt.

While I had the supercharger off. I decided to replace the thermostat, waterpump, PCV, all seals and gaskets to intake manifolds, supercharger, coolant lines and hoses as well as the supercharger (found a deal).

But other than the misfire I think the crank pulley damage was caused when I hit a piece of semi truck tire that caused the radiator, AC condenser and heat exchanger damage.

Just a series of unfortunate events that now are being remedied. Ughhh again FML but has allowed me to be more intimate with my car lol.

Break a part, upgrade a part. I see no problems here. When you're done you'll have all the right goodies.

Interesting read, informative & helpful @ the same time. I am a mechanical “Neanderthal” so a bit of envy ~ your skill set. Perhaps I missed it but out of curiosity, mileage, year & service HX of the S5 if you would please. TIA & hopefully all of your issues have been resolved!

2013 Audi S5. 86k. Somethings I just feel were due. Definitely 100% injector. My girl is back! Finished getting everything 100% and used VaGcom to track codes and clear them till I am zero codes.

I was truly lucky to have found a fluidampr crank pulley local as that went on without a hitch and it made it so smooth.

Didn't get to drive her a lot due to snow here in Denver now and no front bumper. I could have put my damaged OEM one on and drove her home but I decided with the snow, it was a job better suited for my 09 rubicon. My Rubicon only gets about 3k miles per year and is not a fun daily as she sits on 37" tires.

New bumper comes in on Tuesday and from there I will wrap the bumper (my entire car is wrapped matte gunmetal metallic) so just gotta wrap it and be done. One thing I want and have been searching is an option of fog lights on an RS5 bumper, as mine is a BKM RS5 style bumper. I may have to fab something.

I will say this. She is running so nice right now, it is amazing. Can't wait for the weather to get better on Wednesday and take her for a good test drive. I will update the thread. Time to get back to mods. Methanol/water injection coming up.

Here she is earlier today after I met with the guy local for the fluidampr crank pulley with 187mm attachment. Perfect for my dual pulley as my supercharger pulley is 57mm.. love this fluidampr and highly recommend it. 1603659893723.jpg

I'm also looking to to buy a rs5 style bumper, but I want the fog lights. Unfortunately there isnt a aftermarket company that makes one like that.
If u fab one up, I maybe interested.
