Hey all,
Lurker, buyer, researcher...
I have been working on Audi's, BMW and other Euro for about 20 years. I recently (Feb 2020) bought an Audi S5 B8.5 for a good deal. It was stock, never really drove hard (friend of mine in a financial bind) and seemed like a great car. I traded him my Audi A3 Quattro plus some cash. Brought it home and started the search for what I should do. Here is what I opted to do:
Custom 2.5" exhaust - I have my own shop with lift, welders, plasma, etc etc.
IE stage 2 dual pulley tune with DSG
IE Dual Pulley
Custom Intake, modifying the stock box to have better flow and a Pipercross filter and ECS Carbon tube
MercRacing Heat Exchanger with a Meziere water pump wired into stock with a relay.
Upgrade all coils and spark plugs.. Bosch coils with 9 series Iridium (recommended by IE)
I get all this ordered and or done at the shop and begin the process of enjoying. car runs great before and no errors.. I put about 1k miles on it before the work begins.
I put all the work on and it goes without a hitch.. thank you Audi for making this easier to work on then my A3.. it was surprisingly easy..
I put on about 1k more miles and I start getting an EPC light and check engine light. I use my OBDEleven and get misfire on cylinder 6.. sometimes with 4 and sometimes with 3 but always with 6. So I decide I will go back to stock plugs.. About 300 miles later I get EPC and misfire on 6.. Never 3 or 4 anymore but always 6. But never says anything about fuel
I see 6 is usually related to the intercoolers in the SC so I decide to look into ordering them.. Not a horrible price but I will check with my Tech Friend and see what he knows and what is good in the ways of this. He says he has a brand new Supercharger at his house if I wanted it for $600.. Says it was a customer that got into an accident and the insurance company totaled it out with only 750 miles. I get it asap and put it on while replacing all seals and o-rings etc. I go out and boom the EPC light comes on and Check engine light.. I get a misfire 6 but I also see using VCDS that I have a Low Fuel pressure regulation P310B..
Ok, so I decide I will replace the LPFP, HPFP and do the Autotech upgrade. I get this done and boom no more fuel errors but I get an EPC at about 4k rpms driving only and I can reset it by turning it off and then back on.. But if I go above 4k rpms it sputters and boom EPC comes on.. if I check with OBDEleven it says cylinder 6 misfire but not triggering a check engine light.
I wonder if anyone has had this? I recently hit a piece of semi truck tire as it blew out right in front of me in flowing traffic with no options so I have to replace my bumper, radiator and core support.. No leaks from coolant or anything.. But as I drove home licking my wounds the Accessory belt broke and there was a small coolant leak.. My thoughts were the aux water pump was pumping and the water pump wasnt so there is somewhere it could come out. I am going to replace a lot of the coolant lines and hoses to be safe. Maybe the water pump too. so I have the engine completely accessible as the front end is completely off.
I searched and searched about people having sputtering but they never mentioned they got an EPC.. I did check the intake ports when I had the supercharger off and they look exceptionally clean. no carbon build up at all. In fact number 6 looked way too clean compared to the others. but then again so did 3.
I am waiting on my BK Motorsports bumper (cheaper than stock) to come in and a few other parts as well since I am going to do some coolant line replacements etc.
