Hey guys. So I picked up a 2001 Audi TT. It is a 180 pretty much converted to a 225, visually anyways, the dual exhaust. Rear bumper, I guess you can call it a conversion? Lol.. So anyways, it came with 75,000 miles. And a Tech tonics 50 trim, top mount turbo with a custom T4 flange manifold. Everything has been working great, small over boost issues here and there, common misfires. Took care of that. And here is where I royally fucked up and cannot believe my dumb ass..
4500$ for the car, put 6000 miles on it, beat on her pretty good, never boosted past 18 PSI. Anyways, when I did my last oil change, I stripped the oil drain plug, which I tried to rethread with heil coils and a bigger bolt I had laying around, this did the job and held. Three days later out of no where, low oil pressure light comes on and I continued my 1 mile drive home, very loud rattling. Now it wont start. Cranks over fine. I was getting Camshaft sensor implausible code and a ECM code out of no where but i think that was a fuse because something hit my positive battery terminal, my metal oil coolant line to turbo.
Cleared those, did all fuses, same thing just cranks. Getting fuel, spark. Haven't checked compression yet, didn't even bother. I noticed my exhaust camshaft by the pully part, the camshaft tore into the one cam holder, the 4 piece lock down. So the chances it didn't jump timing and bend valves are like zero to none, then I used a snake cam and peeked in there and def looks like bent valves on the intake manifold side when I pulled that. Pics coming.
So I picked up another 2001 TT , guy lost title, lmao it's probably stolen or his friends car, seemed like a meth head.. 1000$ 130k miles.. Said ran great till fuel pump went out. Took his word for it, as the front bumper is the same pearl aviator grey as mine I desperately need which is gonna run me 500-700$ anyways, literally mint bumper, rear too. Borla muffler. I figure with getting my bumper back, stock OEM Audi Rims, and a few other parts I got my 1000$ back either way. Said the motor runs no problem. It also came with a lot of the stock plastic covers under the hood over the engine and didn't look really messed with. I did notice once I got it home the intercooler piping was disconnected. Not sure if it was modded and they put it back to stock or what.
I did lift the back seats on it, and fuel pump has def been messed with so that story adds up. Maybe it was just some redneck methhead idiot who knows jack shit about VW/Audi lol.
But anyways to get to the real point of my post here, I got it bc it has the same motor. The 1.8t 180 awp. I was hoping it had a good intact head and block etc. No title, just a parts car. My car is literally mint, ZERO dents rust scratches etc, even undearneath, I mean mint for 20 years! No rusted bolts, cleanest car i've ever had, you would think it's damn near new! 75k Miles. Pearl aviator grey. 5 speed. No way I can let this gem go, worth every penny IMO and several others do get motor swapped and built and running again.
Tomorrow I will be pulling the motor in my car, I already prepped it just need to pop head bolts and down pipe off my turbo. Well the head anyways, because I was hoping that was all the damage done. It cranks just fine, no noises clunks nothing. But I am really in no rush, it's been weeks already, should I just pull the block too all at once?
And from there take it apart and rebuild it? Forged pistons and rods and a good cleaning, rebuilt head with a quality entirely new valve train and cam shafts. Put it back in and get it fired up? I have a fully tuned ECU, will it run OK or should I not run it all, of course after making sure it does start and run, until I get it retuned. There is a Dyno 1 hour from me, can they fully retune it or is a dyno tune something that just squeezes the last drops of power out from their machine to your current tune ?
Post is getting long, SO TLDR SORRY FOLKS.
What is the BEST way to pull this motor ? Engine and block, right out the front? How do I do this? I know how to take the front off into service mode no problem, I just bought 400$ in tools so I should have every tool needed on me ready to go. Unbolt the downpipe off my Turbo, motor mounts etc, now how do I unhook the transmission ? Just some bolts, pull axles and drive shaft out my trans and my block and head should come right out yeah? Correct me if I am wrong. Yes I have been watching multiple youtude videos, some of them suck some are really good.
But I have lurked this forum for years as I have always owned VW/Audi, but this is the furthest I have gone into DIY. I am very confident in my self in doing this job, I just have never gone as far as touching the transmission.
I am going to buy the bentley manual as I have seen dozens and dozens of pro Audi guys say this over and over again.
I am going to use masking tape to tape off all harnesses and lines and write in sharpie on them a code im going to make up so I don't get things confused when put it back in.
My car also has full on deletes besides the N75. There is A LOT of space, this job seems honestly really freaking easy I just don't know the best easiest way to pull the motor. TIME IS NOT A ISSUE, I will take apart 15 extra things most people don't because I don't want to eff anything up and I want it done right and easiest, I have the time and going to replace everything I am taking out, seals gaskets all hoses going silicone high temp etc etc.
I was hoping the head from the parts car I got would be okay, and I could just clean that up, probably even rebuild it with top quality valvetrain and slap it in and get back to driving. I have a new oil sump, I am going to drop that and check the oil pump, chain and pick up tube. Replace /clean all of those, seafoam the hell out of the motor etc and pray to god I will be okay.
Then in the mean time I am going to build the block from the parts car, forged pistons and rods, rebuild the head I ruined out of my car as well again quality everything rebuild head slapped onto the parts car block rebuilt forged, and then swap that in when I am ready and have the car retuned.
I am located in Upstate, NY, near Watkins Glen. I would pay anybody if they could help me, I really do not want to lose this gem, and any advice is greatly appreciated.
Yes laugh at me, feel free, I am a idiot lol.
What are your opinions? Think my bottom end is going to have problems in the near future as well? My VVT I also noticed is stuck down. Oil squirter passages clogged to it, or the filter on the oil pick up tube? I don't know how heil coils could get past that... Here are the pictures of the snake cam to my valves, def bent yeah? I think when the exhaust camshaft jumped and bit into that it jumped timing and caused bent valves. I am really hoping a rebuilt head swap, oil pump and pick up tube and sump will get me driving again...
I have VagCom VCDS, only code I was getting is implausible camshaft signal. I replaced CPS, code went away. Never came back, car still will not start. Then started getting a ECM, code, I believe that was to battery dieing from cranking etc, I also noticed some wiring problems in the coil pack wiring harness, but they are all getting spark consistently, getting fuel. Has to be bent valves.
When I drop the oil pan I can look up in and see if I have bent rods or something, yeah ? If that looks ok, put new oil sump in, pick up tube, oil pump if neccessary, with a rebuilt head timed right it should fire right up, wouldn't you think so?
Help is greatly appreciated.. If you live near me and could help me, I will pay cash, even just for a few hours to show me things and pointers and tips and tricks... Or if you help me fully pull the motor etc I will supply plenty of beer, a nice chunk of cash hundos on deck. A indy shop told me 8k for a head rebuilt, because it has 20 valves... Uhhh? I can get a entire 20 valve head rebuild kit for just under 400$ lol, springs valves all.. OEM quality.. Cant lose this car. Please help me!
Havent got to vagcom the parts car yet, need to throw in my battery and hook it up to my laptop and see what codes that was throwing...
Regardless at least I got my stock OEM mint bumper back same color, a whole 1.8t motor I can rebuild, 225 bumper, Borla muffler, stock Audi rims, hopefully the stock turbo is good.
If I have too I can even buy a rebuilt 1.8t awp motor off ebay, and if someone helps me put it in if near my area, I will pay good chunk of cash, and lots of beer... Other party favors as well lol. Have a garage and all the tools.
Roast me, laugh at me, I deserve it lol, but please help me with some advice here. Thanks so much
Here are some photos. The nice one is clearly the mint baby im reviving, other is parts car lol.
