    Q7 4M transmission shifting

Hi, I am new to Q7 4M and notice something that I do not know if it is normal or there is a fix for it. The transmission jerks into the gear, it is very settled feel but noticeable and it’s mostly felt in slow speeds under 20mph when shifting to 3d or any gear in fact. It is felt in the whole car chassis when going uphill the most. Driving on level road is not as bad. It feels as if someone let go of clutch and engage clutch very quickly. It is nice and smooth when aggressively accelerating. In S mode it might be less noticeable, but it is still there. No codes in VCDS and car drives great other then that. Car has about 56k miles on it. I can easily reproduce it when I slowly accelerate then let go of gas pedal then I slowly start to accelerate when car in driving up hill.

I also have A6 C7 tdi and maybe because it’s lighter car then Q7 but it does not have that, I’m wondering if there is maybe a software update to transmission on Q7 or that’s normal on Q7s ? Any advice appreciated.

    Thanks!

Oh, so you are saying it's not specific to Q7 4M and other models have similar issue? I thought that maybe because it's bigger car the transmission has to work harder or its just me.

    Thanks

It’s been couple of years but finally figure out what it was today. The transmission was fine but supercharger clutch was done. I had no idea that supercharger has a clutch and it’s a wearable item like disk brakes. The jurk was coming from the supercharger clutch and not tranny. After replacing the clutch it feels like a brand new car.

I started to have the issue about 56k miles on it but change the clutch at 90k miles as it got worst over time. I went to several dealers and they said to change tranny fluid, that was done twice. Engine mounts were also replaced. Tranny was also on latest software revision, but every one was pointing to faulty tranny. What a difference driving the car now.

Glad to hear that it was in fact the clutch on yours!

Did you notice any hesitation between 1500 rpm to around 2K? And if so did this remove that hesitation?

Yes, it had hesitation then all sudden surge of power. In S mode little less evident with butter smooth shifts on WOT but the worst was driving slow with on and off the throttle. It would experience a jurk when usually slowing down then accelerating again. Become so annoying over time. What help me diagnose the issue was enabling gear display in cluster. So I know the tranny was in gear and did not shift but I experience a jurk, that confirm the tranny was fine, unless there was some sort of over drive gear but that is not the case with our trannies.

    Yes, it solved the issue.

Same issue here, SC clutch solved what felt like rough shifting (or in some instances, a misfire).

Glad I found this. I recently bought a 2017 with 87000mi and I have noticed this myself. I was thinking it was torque converter lockup. Ill be getting a new sc clutch. Maybe its also a good time to tell the wife we need stage 2 apr at the same time.

Does this only apply to 4m? Because I have the same exact issues with my 4L Q7 and I was looking into replacing supercharger clutch. Which is not cheap 😫😢

My 2019 Q7 was shifting hard. My local audi dealer stated they adapted my transmission, and shifting is improved.. Might be worth a try before trying more expensive options.

Hi there, glad i found this thread. My 2015 (original owner) q7 is doing almost exactly the same thing as OP described. It started about a month ago. When the car is at a low speed (usually below 30mph) and coasting (i let go the gas pedal due to traffic or road conditions, etc), if i step on the gas, the car sometimes would lurk forward and make a loud banging noise which sounds like two pieces of solid metal hitting each other. It happens when i am gental with the car. If i push the car hard, there is usually no issues.

The difference though is that my investigation points to the transmission as the culprit. Because if i drive it in Manual mode, i can see when this happens, the transmission goes to a higher gear without my input. For example, i am driving in 1st gear, the engine rpm goes to 1600 (the car is very slow), i upshift to 2nd gear. Bang, the car's gauge cluster shows the transmission upshifts into 4th gear by itself. Then it drops to 2nd and i can go normally from that point on until it happens again. I've also seen it go to 6th gear while it is supposed to be in 4th gear and the loud banging sound accompanies when the mis-sfhit happens.

So the question is if the supercharger clutch issue could also cause the transmission to misshift? or how can i test out the theory of a bad supercharger clutch?

btw, my car is a 2015 q7 premium plus with only 70k miles on it. unfortunately, most of the last 20k is local drive. And our town is notorious for winding and undulating roads and having traffic lights everywhere. I have to engage and disengage gas pedal all the time until getting on the highway which is about 10 minutes away. So this happens almost always when i am driving in town (more so when the car is old than warm). For the past 2 years, this car has been used mostly in town to drive the kids around. I suspect it causes the transmission to age much faster than open road/high way driving.

Also i took the car my mechanic who is about 30 miles from me. We tried three times to reproduce the problem to no avail. First time was when the car was in normal operating temperature right after i got to his place. Second time is when i left the car with him overnight and he tried by himself. The third time is after the car sat in his lot for 2 days and we drove together. I think it's probably because his town has pretty straight roads with less traffic lights.

Any help with diagnosing the issue is appreciated!

    I don't believe the pre-2017 have a clutch
