Gearbox Malfunction you can continue driving

I have a b8 s4 and I have had this Gearbox malfunction error for a while now. I had the code read about a year ago, it was P179E00 Drive Position sensor. The car drives fine and the error comes and goes after 15 mins of driving but i think i want to get around fixing sometime soon. Just wonder if any of yall have had this problem and how much did it cost to fix the issue? From what ive heard its requires the transmission to be pulled out?

Transmission builder in CT by the name of Eriksson Industries replaced that sensor for $2400 on a car I bought.

Yea tranny has to be opened up. It can cost anywhere between $2,400-$6000. Highest price being at the dealership of course.

At least with Audis we have that option. When i had 911 and my PDK went due to $20 sensor. The whole transmisison needed to be replaced, its the dumbest design ever.

Shitty option, quite honestly. Might be possible that that pdk sensor could be replaced, it’s just no shop wants to do it. Most people/shops just get another gearbox when this sensor quits, I had to look around to find somebody who would do the replacement. Might be possible that Porsche does take the cake in this case, though, they are not exactly famous for repairability either. Still, the idea of burying some electronic sensor inside a hot gear oil compartment is very “smart”. Anyway, good luck to the OP

Appreciate the insight. I been thinking about just buying a low mileage transmission from a 2015-2016 S4 and just replace the whole thing. I hate to cough up 2k-6k just to replace a sensor then something else goes wrong and i gotta pull the transmission out again. Ive seen issues with the "Gearbox Malfunction you can continue driving" error where guys lose reverse and the car is in limp mode. I dont wanna deal with that after spending money to replace a sensor

that issue is most often just caused by bad pcbs, easy fix. However, if you can do a gen 2 dsg swap then by all means do and document it. You might need new rear diff and bunch of programming. do note that that sensor does quit on gen 2 transmissions too, although less frequently.

bad pcbs you say, that is interesting. Im gonna talk to my audi guy about that.

hi guys.
I have been with this error message forabout a year, trying to find the right answer and not dropping the transmission and something else needs to be done. This message show up, mainly, during the afternoon while I m driving errorless during the morning. So my family know that afternoon is when the errors shows up, but after 15 or more minutes, I can drive again.
my audi is A6 C7 2012, 3.0 TFSI
if you know what was the solutions please let me know.

@agasociados you could try an "adaptation" as described on Ross-Tech site, or a more simple "reset" (press and keep throttle past kick point, key on but engine not running, keep pressed for 30sec, turn key off, release throttle).
I had recently similar issues with my S4, and that fixed it. At least temporarily (my mech did the adaptation, to be clear).

It seems in time this Drive Position Sensor gives up, and as described above, it's a rather expensive job. It also seems to happen when the ATF fluid is hot.

Same thing came and went for me, moreso when the transmission was up to operating temperature. It was a transmission-out job to replace the selector lever sensor, and I was fortunate enough to find a transmission shop to take on the repair for $4,200. Miles don't mean shit, my car had 38K or so when it happened, so be wary of used transmissions regardless of mileage or age, they're all at least 7 years old by now.

Re transmissions and sourcing, any good references?
I've inquired with my local dealer, no new ones available, ETA 1-2mo. Couldn't find even reman or used ones.
A used one might be a worthless expense due to the nature of this issue though.

The above is NOT the correct parts to fix the Drive Position Sensor (Gear selector lever position, senses the position of the gear shift lever R,N,D....).

S4’ed is correct. That kit will not cure your P179E. That code is related to the sensor that tells the car what gear it’s in.
