Someone please explain valve control on stock RS5 exhaust

The only time I hear my stock sport exhaust burble and pop is on sport shift mode. Otherwise, it’s quiet in drive whether it’s comfort or dynamic. Are the valves closed unless you are in sport shift mode? I like the sound it makes at sport mode, assuming that’s the only time all the exhaust valves are open. But hate that I have to shift into sport to do it. If I’m in individual mode with dynamic everything except dampers and go into manual mode in drive shift, it’s quiet too! Maybe time for new exhaust or valve control unit.

Try cycling through the different modes to get back to either your dynamic or individual after starting the car. For some odd reason, when you shut the car off and start it again, it won't be in "dynamic" even if it is selected and says that on your gauge. Also, from factory, even in dynamic and sport mode (S), both valves won't open until 3K RPM and above. The way to bypass this is either unplug the valves or get the CETE Active Valve controller. I have it and it works quite well!

Does your RS5 have the dynamic package? My exhaust gets louder when set to Auto mode, even when not in Sport mode. I only use Individual mode (exhaust & suspension in comfort) or Auto mode.

    Dynamic package:
    Red brake calipers
RS sport exhaust system with black tips
RS sport suspension plus with Dynamic Ride Control (DRC)
    BMW M3 Competition X-drive
Gone (not forgotten): 2019 RS5 Sportback

The valve behavior is not very straight forwards in these cars. There are several variables the engine management takes into account as to how the valve behave, but to make it simpler and more intuitive the CETE module is the way to go as mentioned above:

    Controller Package | Exhaust Valve

    PRODUCT DETAILS
    - Complete Control of Exhaust Valves with Factory Controls
    - No Additional Key Fobs Required for Full Control
    - Plug In - Tapping of Two Wires is Required
    - Dynamic - Valves are Fully Open at All RPM
    - Automatic - Standard Factory Valve Behavior
    - Comfort - Valves Remain Closed until 5000rpm
    - ESP Double Tap - Immediate Closing or Opening of Valves
    - Startup - Valves Revert to Last Setting Used on Shutdown

This allows for a simpler operation of the valves and in dynamic you can have the valves open all the time to produce that noise you are looking for. There is also a programmable module which allows you to really set the valves to open/close in pretty specific ways, speed ranges, rpm ranges, etc. You can click the link above to get more information as well.

If you or anyone else have questions on CETE items don't hesitate to let me know via PM/email: [email protected]

I do have the dynamic package. I’ll try the auto mode first before buying the valve control module. I wish the valves were open all the time. But that’s just me. Lol. Thanks!

Is there better video of sound comparisons out there?

I used to have a valve control module on my C63S and made that made a HUGE difference in sound. From the video above on the RS5, it doesn’t seem like much of a difference.

From around 3 minutes on there is quite a bit of video, that to my ears, is reasonably different in volume and sound with the car in dynamic vs. comfort. Obviously the louder the exhaust to start with the more dramatic the volume change will be and also where the camera is placed, etc. This is all fairly subjective and I find the difference on my S5 to be noticeable but not dramatic. I do not have an RS5 specific video that dives in deeper than the one here and on the product page:

    Cheers,
Eh, that’s what I was afraid of. Pretty underwhelming. Better to put an aftermarket exhaust on.

Exhaust volume and noise is so subjective. Some people may think the RS5 is too loud stock, some may think the factory exhaust is underwhelming. The valve controller unfortunately can't make the car louder than stock so for someone, such as yourself, who wants something louder that factory an exhaust is definitely in the cards.

Once you do have an aftermarket exhaust the issue with the valves opening/closing randomly can actually be more noticeable since you can hear the exhaust more. Makes the need for a valve controller even bigger IMHO.

Happy to help with an exhaust and/or controller if you are in the market. Offerings are listed here:

    A5, S5, RS5 B9 | '17-'19 Exhaust
