2007 A6 AMI Ipod Input to Aux Input converter

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey Guys,

My car came with the AMI with an ipod input. i assume this is factory (or semi-factory addon as it is in the MMI menu). I would like to do an aux input from this ipod cable and bought an ipod to aux adapter. The problem i am having is that the car recognizes that i plug something in.

when i plug the 3.5mm aux adapter in then it says its trying to connect to something, obviously it wont find an ipod here.

after a minute or two i get this message:

Does anyone have a way to swap this ipod input to act as an aux input? or do i need to do some physical rewiring?

    thank you for any pointers,
    Marko

The AMI is looking to read data. The 3.5 mm jack only sends sound. I’m assuming that’s your issue.

We have been using a BoVee 1000 and streaming BT from it through the AMI. It will recognize an iPhone as an iPod and have the same controls as one, but you can also stream music from an Android phone, albeit with fewer control options. Since we just upgraded to a 10.25" android navigation, we have no use for the BoVee 1000 anymore.

I also have a bovee/tune2air. I find that the Bluetooth signal cuts out frequently particularly when driving in crowded areas. I am going to try an AMI to lightning adapter for my iPhone. If it works it will serve 2 purposes: playing music and charging.

We never had issues with it cutting out, but using an iPhone and Android alternatingly meant we had to disconnect and re-connect the AMI cable after switching phones and make sure the bluetooth is turned off on the phone you don't want to connect while the other one is connecting.

Thanks for the input. i was trying to avoid bluetooth somewhat for my past experiences of it not being smooth/always working like a 3.5mm aux jack does.

Does anyone know if it is possible to reconfigure the AMI to only look for sound input rather than a data handshake?

There are some options that emulate an iPod, but let you plug in a device through a 3.5mm jack, like this or this or this.

I have no idea how well any of them work and you can't control your device through the MMI, but you'd have a physical connection vs. Bluetooth. The other option would be to buy a cheap used iPod and get Apple Music.

If you want to go the route with the 3.5mm jack and have a nice phone holder that attaches to your dashboard and not your windshield, look at proclipusa.com for a nice mount and device holder. I've been using proclip mounts and holders for years and wouldn't use anything else.

I am using the Carpro bluetooth adapter.

It is slow to reconnect, especially when the phone is connected to a bluetooth headset.

Other than that it is perfect.

thanks for those 3.5mm adapter links Henning, those look like a decent physical alternative! although they are listed for 2009+ cars, i wonder what is different vs a 2007.

Doesn't that just plug into the AMI either way? I thought they had the same connector in all model years, just some have power and some don't. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

If car have AMI installed, which is rare, then its different story..

I'm not sure about that power, however if the power would be the issue, there would be a adapter for power already.
But now only way for mmi 2g to get aux is complete adapter (interface box) with power and optical i/o connector at price starting from 150$

My AMI supplies power to the Bovee and I have MMI 2g. Quite a lot of vehicles in the US came with AMI, because the US equipment levels are much higher. In the US every A6 C6 has the better automatic climate control, MMI2g and leather (partially fake leather) power seats. A lot also have AMI and Memory seats with power steering column adjustment and keyless go. I believe they all have the ambient lighting and a sunroof in the US as well, at least I've never seen one without.

i am going to try one of those OCR AMI cables off Amazon and if that doesn't work well or is clunky then try the Bovee bluetooth adapter. The AMI cable should arrive today so its a quick thing to test before going all the way bluetooth.

I actually got US version car in Europe, agree it have rich equipment that is why I choose it, except mine doesn't have AMI or power steering column or reverse camera.

I used to have a 2005 A6 3.2 and that did not have the AMI or Navigation, but still had the MMI 2g High with the 7" color screen. I asked about retrofitting navigation and Audi wanted $2,500 at the time so I passed and bought a nice TomTom and a device holder for it. What they all do have in the US is satellite radio. So as far as music was concerned I was all set. It also had all the other nice options like leather, power seats and ambient lighting. No memory or power steering column, though and no auto-dimming mirror which I find odd on a vehicle in that price category.

It should plug right into your AMI in the glove box next to the CD changer.

AMI is on the left if it came from the factory. Otherwise the CD changer will be in the left. If there's an AMI on the right it was retrofitted at some point.

The cable goes behind the rubber flap where I'm pointing.Attachment 180215Attachment 180216

    Awesome, thanks, will test shortly

edit: that worked! my wife wants to use the aux solution now, so will wait with going to bluetooth.
