    Lowered Spring recommendations

Recently I have been considering to lower my S5 B9 on springs not coilovers

What would be the best cost effective lowering springs for the S5 B9 mine is a coupe

    A few questions:

What brand springs work well with the stock S5 shock absorbers

    What is the ride like

Has anybody installed other type springs for example adjustable height spring on their S5

    What would you recommend

I just ordered 034 springs for my S4. These and EMD springs seem to very popular on here for the b9 platform. They’re both a modest drop and don’t compromise ride quality too much. ABT & KW height adjustable springs are a solid option if you want more adjustability and don’t mind spending a little more

    Thanks SonnyS4

Do you have a link to the 034 springs I'm from the UK How low do they lower the S5? modest drop is preferred .

How do they compare to H&R or Eibach springs

I want to say H&R and Eibach will have stiffer spring rates than the 034 and maybe a little more of a drop but I’m not 100% sure about that.

Front strut and rear sway bar from 034 make a big difference as well if you want even more handling performance.

Heard good things about HR Sport springs also. Found this coupe on HR and 20s.

I’m probably going to go for the same.

Do you know the part number for the H&R springs for the coupe as i believe there are 3 types 25mm 30mm or 35mm?

Look into the height adjustable springs... the regular drop springs are not always an even drop. I used to have H&R springs on my 2008 A3 and the ride quality was quite good... so now I got the H&R adjustable springs. But I haven’t installed them yet.

Bearing in mind that the adjustable ones might be almost double the price is the standard ones.

Those seem to be the most common/popular brands that get good reviews from people, H&R and 034 Motorsports.

Thanks ...I will look into the height adjustable to before making a decision. I just don't want the car becoming too bouncy

The springs themselves look pretty similar to the regular H&R springs.

    IMG_1782.JPG
    IMG_1783.JPG

You just get these mounts to adjust the height they sit at relative to the mounting points.

I don’t think the ride quality is likely to be any different from the standard H&R springs. The ride quality in my A3 certainly didn’t suffer any and it was definitely not bouncy. Only slightly firmer than stock. As for this application, I won’t know for sure until I actually install them. First I have to sort out some warranty issues with Audi before I will start messing around with installing aftermarket components.

I have 034 Motorsport springs. Very happy with results. Drop about 0.9” F/R. Ride quality is just a bit stiffer than stock (as expected) but gained a lot in dynamics. For me, lowering springs and front strut brace are 2 of the best mods for your suspension. A must have. Here’s a picture after lowering springs installed

Just got my 034 springs installed yesterday. I also have the H&R sway bars, front and rear. The car handles awesomely! Springs added a slight increase in ride stiffness but still very comfortable. Corners so flat. Here before and after pics. IMG_1688.JPGIMG_2258.JPG once I have a little more drive time, I’ll post a review.

Do you have any more side shots now that everything has settled? I have the exact wheel setup and am considering switching from my H&Rs because I find it sits a bit low for my liking

I installed my 034 springs on Saturday and initial impressions are positive. As others have stated, modest drop, slightly stiffer than stock in a good way (still retains audi comfort) and improved handling dynamics. Added a front strut brace yesterday and plan on installing my rear sway bar today to complete the handling upgrades.

Everyone looks like their drops result in pretty even front/rear gaps. I have HR springs and I'm not sure why but the car is dumped on the front versus the rear.

I would get in contact with H&R and send them the pictures… That is most certainly not installed correctly as you’re about a half an inch too low. Are you able to reach in and take a picture of the spring and the seat where it sits

My S5 Sportback sits about the same way. I called H&R and sent them a few pics thinking the car was sitting too high in the rear. Here is part of their response.

I’ve reviewed the photo with several of my colleagues, and it does appear to lower appropriately.
I do see the gap at the rear of the car, but on stock S5’s the rear end appears to sit a touch bit higher from the factory, our kit was designed to mimic that result only lower.

To verify the proper springs are installed, the 50385 kit comes with the following springs:

    Front: 28757VA w/ a red paint mark
    Rear: 28757-5HA

My car is not sitting on bump stops front or rear, it’s just not as low in the back as I expected. I did compare to a photo with stock springs (same wheels installed) and it did have the same rake, so I took H&Rs response as good enough. Wondering if there’s another option to get a little lower in the rear or if I should just order the adjustable springs.

With all these lowering springs the bumpstops must be trimmed or you can get odd looking heights and not the greatest ride quality. The H&R lower springs certainly ride on the bumpstops when they are not trimmed.

Also cars that do not have certain options may sit differently, amount of gas in the car, items in the car, etc.

    Cheers,
I disagree re cutting bumpstops. 034 is a mild drop a nowhere near sitting on the bumpstops when at rest. Vehicle options/ full tank/ items in the car is not going to explain differences like what we see between abiley84 H&R and TeflonS4 H&R drop.

I can guarantee that if the bumpstops are not trimmed on the H&R that it can yield an odd looking and driving A/S/RS5. I say this because when I first installed H&R springs on my S5 I did not trim and the car sat oddly, lower front, higher rear. I inspected and found the rear bumpstops were effecting the resting ride height. The front was almost touching as well and in time would have when the springs settled. I trimmed front and rear bumpstops, the rear came down visibly as the springs settled and the front now actually has proper suspension range of motion without contacting the bumpstops.

With springs that lower less than the H&R springs it's still a requirement to trim the bumpstops if you want the car to ride without hitting them repeatedly. Bumpstops are not meant to be part of the suspension that holds weight or is repeatedly contacted/used. With stock suspension heights the bumpstops are used to avoid hard contact with the chassis and disallowing the shock internals to bottom out under very large suspension movement. This means that any larger movement of the suspension engages the bumpstops adding a massive change in spring rate during contact, bumpstops increase the spring rate massively when they are engaged which is not their intention.

That is how little room there is with a half trimmed bumpstop with this car which has H&R springs:

My S5 sat normally front/rear after the bumpstops were trimmed, the rear being the most effected. Every single lowering spring or adjustable spring kit for these models requires the bumpstops be trimmed for proper suspension travel and/or in some cases proper resting ride height.

    Cheers,
Hey Alex I'm dealing with the same issue on my b9.5 at the moment, with the front being super low and the rear being too high in comparison. So you noticed the front came up after trimming? did you have to pull all of the suspension to do the trimming?

I'm on the same H&R Sport Springs and mine is not dumped like that at all. I know mine is an A5, as compared to your S5 but the drop is advertised the same and I've seen many S5s with the same springs dropped like mine. Regarding the bump stops, I actually have no idea if the shop who installed it trimmed it.
