Front left ABS sensor wire

I have a feeling my front left ABS sensor wire is bad. I got the christmas tree parking brake/abs/eps warnings after washing the car.
I replaced the sensor as the error indicated in VCDS, and the parking brake module.
I tested for continuity in the sensor to module, but I don't know how to test the +wire.
I was looking for the wire anyway as it looks like it may have been replaced in the past. it should be a two trunk wire at the breakout point, like the other side, as I don't have TPMS but the wire on front left is a three trunk with the third cut off.
In searching online I can't seem to find the wire anywhere, in my searches I only find the other type of sensor wire, not for the B8 a4. I can find the sensors just not wire.
Does anyone know the part number? or a link?

Too little information. Start by posting the complete autoscan from the vehicle so we don't have to keep reasking for this piece or that piece of what your car is. And so we have the complete text of the DTC you are trying to work from.

How did you go from a front left wheel speed sensor error to replacing a parking brake module? The parking brake is on the rear wheels.

So you're saying your car does not have PR code 7K6 (indirect TPMS) or 7K8 (direct TPMS)? Curious.

Anyway, no point going down a spiderweb of speculation until that hard information is in hand.

It's an Irish Model, many things that are standard in the states can be optional here. I also have a stereo that's not made anywhere but in basic european models, this is a front wheel drive 6 speed manual later 2008 model. 8k

I had two issues, but from what i've read in other forum posts, the ABS/EPS system is hooked into the EPB. Since I had other errors related to the EPB, and it was cheap, I replaced it. My next guess was the ABS/EPS control unit itself if I did not find wiring faults.

Why is the car set to 2019 as the year? And that's a lot of various electrical issues.

If you clear the DTC, does it come back without moving the vehicle? If so, and given that it's electrical fault and not something like implausible signal, then it's unlikely to be a problem with the magnet ring in the wheel bearing.

If you swap the sensor with the sensor on any other wheel, does the error move to the other wheel or stay on the front left? If it moves, sensor; if not, wiring.


The only legitimate way to authoritatively isolate the wiring as the problem would be to swap the two wires on the 38-pin plug with the two wires for the two wires for a different corner of the car. If the error moves to the other location, then it is the wiring. If not, then it's the controller, possibly. But repinning that massive plug is likely going to be unfun and might just make more problems if any wire-pin connections get messed up.

What I would probably do is unplug all four sensors and the big plug on the ABS/ESP module. To get that disconnected, pull upwards on the red lock to move it out of the way of the gray release lever, then rotate up the gray release lever to move the connector out of the module. I suspect the female pins will be in the harness plug at the wheel speed sensor, so you should be able to just short them together using a wire. Then back at the 38-pin plug, measure resistance across the four wire pairs and see if the front left stands out versus the others. You could also use diode test mode and get a voltage drop value rather than a resistance value as a counter check.

While you are there, also do a DC voltage reading from the + and - jumper cable posts (+ in the plenum chamber middle, - on the strut tower) to each of the 8 pins, make sure none of the wire pairs are shorting to ground or term 30. Don't forget to bounce the car at the corner just in case the issue is from in motion.

You see there's the plug 13 for adaptive suspension (you won't have), plug 11 to the level sensor for auto-leveling HID (you won't have), plug 10 to the brake pad wear sensor, and plug 8 to the wheel speed sensor. The harness 8K0 972 251 C is for just the two plugs you should have, 8K1 972 251 E adds the plug for the level sensor, 8K0 972 251 E adds the plug for the level sensor and the plug for the adaptive damper.


The sensor itself is an active design, so you can't really test it with passive measurements.

It's detailed in Audi SSP 285 (2003 D3 A8 - running gear) on pages 50-53. The sensor generates a PWM current flow that induces a voltage in a shunt resister in a voltage divider setup in the control module.

The voltage on the two pins on the control module for each corner should be term 30 (~12v engine off, ~13v engine on) on one pin and maybe 1.5v on the other pin. It won't be term 31 (chassis ground) because of the shunt resistor. It's an expensive module with a lot of readaptations that have to happen if it's replaced, so proceed cautiously if you start putting probe pins into that connector. I also found it interesting, from the repair manual:

"Before inserting speed sensor, clean hole inner surface and coat speed sensor all-round with Polycarbamide grease G 000 650."

I'm pretty sure I have none of that around and didn't use it when I was replacing my wheel bearings.

To get that disconnected, pull upwards on the red lock to move it out of the way of the gray release lever, then rotate up the gray release lever to move the connector out of the module. I suspect the female pins will be in the harness plug at the wheel speed sensor, so you should be able to just short them together using a wire. Then back at the 38-pin plug, measure resistance across the four wire pairs and see if the front left stands out versus the others. You could also use diode test mode and get a voltage drop value rather than a resistance value as a counter check.

While you are there, also do a DC voltage reading from the + and - jumper cable posts (+ in the plenum chamber middle, - on the strut tower) to each of the 8 pins, make sure none of the wire pairs are shorting to ground or term 30. Don't forget to bounce the car at the corner just in case the issue is from in motion.


In the wheel well, here is what you are dealing with:

You see there's the plug 13 for adaptive suspension (you won't have), plug 11 to the level sensor for auto-leveling HID (you won't have), plug 10 to the brake pad wear sensor, and plug 8 to the wheel speed sensor. The harness 8K0 972 251 C is for just the two plugs you should have, 8K1 972 251 E adds the plug for the level sensor, 8K0 972 251 E adds the plug for the level sensor and the plug for the adaptive damper.


The sensor itself is an active design, so you can't really test it with passive measurements.

It's detailed in Audi SSP 285 (2003 D3 A8 - running gear) on pages 50-53. The sensor generates a PWM current flow that induces a voltage in a shunt resister in a voltage divider setup in the control module.

The voltage on the two pins on the control module for each corner should be term 30 (~12v engine off, ~13v engine on) on one pin and maybe 1.5v on the other pin. It won't be term 31 (chassis ground) because of the shunt resistor. It's an expensive module with a lot of readaptations that have to happen if it's replaced, so proceed cautiously if you start putting probe pins into that connector. Much better to have break out plugs you can put on the pins of interest; I'll get me something like this one day (https://www.aeswave.com/uTest-Advanc...Kit-p9748.html).

I'll check these things. As for the year, i'm not sure, this is the first time i've hooked it up and just noticed that. I also don't have some of the things it was showing codes for originally like a Multi function steering wheel. The Engine was replaced recently by the previous owner at the dealership, but i'm wondering if they changed the ECU as well. I have to call them once they open back up after quarantine is lifted.
The problem came about after I washed the car, just sprayed in the wheel well. When I turned the car back on, the errors immediately showed, I didn't even touch the brakes or move it at all.
The rear compartment where fuse box and EPB module is located was getting water through leaking tail light which I sorted.
The Fuse locations don't match up to the manual at all, especially in the rear compartment which is a whole other issue.
Thank you for the reply, I have to get some thinner multimeter probes so i'm not clipping jumpers onto it which can get sketchy.
I did "hone" out the sensor hole surface to a shine before reinstalling. I'll have to try to switch one of the good sensors in just to make sure I didn't get a bad part off the rack.
Your help is much appreciated! I miss my old audi's, they may have had their issues, but the electrical issues are getting more and more complex!

Yeah, which is why it says read DTC memory (ie, do a scan). The modules have operations that rely on a critical associate, the ABS control module, and the ABS is telling them "hey, I've got problems". So these modules are also saying "hey, problems at the ABS, check DTCs", so to say.

And the scan says you don't have the multifunction buttons. Every car will have the J527 (address 16), it's what reads and relays the G85 steering angle sensor data and your wiper/turn stalk actions. But your address 16 lacks the subcomponent E221, which is the multifunction buttons. So you don't have the buttons, at least according to your J527.

The year in the computer is probably just off one in the date/time settings in the car setup menu.

If they failed to connect that sensor plug securely, I guess water could short the circuit and maybe do something to the voltage divider in the control module.

There are a lot of variations of the fuses; my wiring diagram document from erwin is a US spec document, so things might be different on EU cars. Your '08 (according to the VIN) is going to be like my '09 and have the initial fuse layout, I would expect. My "'09" build date is actually Aug 2008. But it's a 9 digit in the VIN because US VINs go by "model year" instead of actual year of build. I have no idea if EU countries have "model year" vs "actual year" concepts.

I don't know about erwin.audi.com in the EU (we use erwin.audiusa.com here), but you might check it and see if you can pay for just a day pass ($35 or so here). Grab the documents for your car such as the wiring diagram and various repair manuals and such and save them as PDF so you have a copy of your actual car materials.

Water in the rear corners through the tail lights seems to be not uncommon; luckily not an issue I've had, but I see threads involving it on a steady basis.

I had trouble with erwin rest of world site a few months back when I was trying to sort a speaker issue, but it looks like their site is up and running again properly so i'll have to do that. I was just getting prepped and trying to figure out what docs i'll need. There seem to be so many and I wasn't sure if you could just pdf print a whole manual or if you had to go page by page, section by section. Things are usually a breeze when I have the right documentation.
I got a different code on the multifunction before and edited it in vcds, It was expecting to have it.
As far as the fuel tank lock, I wasn't even aware I had it so i'll have to check that out as well when I get to erwin, make sure I have it, and fix if I do. I'm just wary of everything now after I viewed the previous auto scan from when I got the car, it was all over the place.
The car inspections here are even more rigorous than they were in New York, so i'm trying to get every little thing sorted.

The fuel filler door actuator, that's a known issue. I've already replaced mine. If it's not to the point that your fuel filler door lock is not opening/locking as expected, let it go. Unless you want to get proactive. Once it starts messing up, the fix is replacing that actuator (remove fuel filler door, remove the plastic gap cover inside there, replace actuator with the lock solenoid and piston). Your fault frequency for those is only 1 though. And you have other issues on the J393, but those might be related to your water issue and the taillights. Or just might be random other things to get to. But the fuel lock codes, not surprised by those at all.

Here, all the docs on erwin are PDFs, so they open in Adobe Reader for me, then I just save them locally. You should be able to filter down to documents relevant to your VIN. Then I grabbed all the "repair manual" ones, and various other things like wiring diagram, a few description documents, etc. Anything I might need to reference to fix my car.

Key 2 lower limit, means the battery in the fob is low.
Don't recognize the other DTC on authorization (05).

OK, I've looked up the part anyway for the filler lock, they shouldn't give me a hard time about that even if they do see it. As far as the DTC memory goes...even after I clear all DTC's these remain? I actually repinned the tail light wire harness and replaced corroded bulbs, the warnings have not come back, but I thought I cleared before another auto scan and these are still there? Perhaps I did not clear before I fixed like I thought, but is that what the fault frequency is? Since last DTC clear or since last on/off cycle?
most of the codes are in the rosstech forum anyway.

Thanks again, I'll have to get into the wire testing next. I looked up that wire loom part for the ABS. Funny, I can find most other ones here, but that particular one for my vehicle, though common and made for UK/Ireland market, I can only find via obscure German classifieds, and US auto parts websites! Either way, at least I can find it now, the part numbers are key.

I'd get a clean slate of what is what first.

Clear DTCs in VCDS (clear DTCs from an autoscan clears all modules), power off the car completely, let it sit a minute. Then drive it say 10 miles out somewhere, turn it off, let it sit a minute, then start it up and drive back (it's 10 miles to the grocery where I live, so that's my example). During the drive out and back, make sure to use everything if only for a minute. Headlights on at some point, high beam for a few seconds, turn signals, A/C, defrost, heated seats if you have it, reverse, brake lights, cruise control, etc. A lot of things don't post a DTC after a clear until they are actually attempted to be used (like my broken driver's heated seat grid, will never see the DTC after a clear until the first time I try to turn it on).

Then run an autoscan and see what comes back. Now you have the new current of what's what. Go from there.

When you clear the DTCs, they are gone. When the module sets a DTC, if it's new, it'll be fault frequency 1. Everytime after that the module sets that DTC, if it's already present in the memory, the fault frequency goes up. So I might see fault frequency of 20 or 30 for that fuel filler lock in an autoscan sometimes when I would clear DTCs (doing other work on the car).

If you do a clear DTCs in an autoscan, you see it sit there a few seconds to cycle and then list all the modules again. Sometimes, you'll get some that are still red, these DTCs failed to clear for whatever reason. Sometimes, it's these check DTC memory types. The module won't let it be cleared, the module has to see the other module is ok and then it will unset it. Sometimes, it takes two clears to clear some. You just have to go case by case to see how to move it forward.

This for example, is from the parking brake. It's a DTC, but it's not saying a problem with the parking brake. It's saying there's a problem in ABS, which the parking brake relies on. So these are not things you can solve directly. You have to go to ABS, see what it's problem is and solve that. Then this goes away.

So I removed the entire wire and stripped it, the wire was the incorrect one anyway as I said before. It appears that they spliced it at two locations. Neither were soldered or heat shrink covered. I cut out that section, spliced and covered properly, everything is sorted now. Though I will be heading over to Erwin as having the pin number diagram and wiring diagrams would have saved a lot of hassle!

Yeah, the wheel well harnesses are bare wire end and spliced into the main harness. Seems an odd thing to me given all the other plugs, why not a simple plug for that too. That splice being a point of failure has been the case in a few threads in the past (though rear wheel iirc). Not heat shrinked, yeah, amateur hour. I mean, a car, nothing gets wet there. :-) I'm not surprised at not soldered, high vibration would dictate a crimp. Glad it turned out to be something reasonably simple to correct.

It would be nice to have plugs, from the wheel well to the harness is very tricky to get to, If it was above that point I would be in for a lot more annoying work getting the fiber tape off. I was lucky it was below that point, just below.
