Mid-pipes on a daily driver - Good idea?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
2019 RS3 with Uni stage 1+ . My car is a daily driver with total of 1:30H commute each day (well....not these days...).
I was wondering if installing mid-pipes will add drone noise at comfort mode? Clearly I want to enjoy better sound on spirited drives, but do not wish to make my commute more miserable.
    Thanks for your input.

My ECU is stock, but I have Unitronic mid-pipes and find there's zero drone in comfort, regardless of what speed or gear I'm in. I notice a little resonance in the 2,000-2,500 RPM range in Dyanmic, but nothing in Comfort.

I have an FBO Uni 1+ RS3 and if it's in comfort, it might as well be stock.

You really won't notice much with the exhaust valves closed. Sounds close to stock.

It wouldn't cause any drone. I have 034smidpipes and standard exhaust and is just right.

I have the Uni mid pipes on my 2018 RS3. In comfort mode there is no drone, may as well be stock. In dynamic mode you will certainly hear a difference and imo it is how the car should have sounded stock. All in all it is the best $250 I have spent on a car lol.

Ran Miltek mids for almost a year, 2019 Uni Stage 1+. It's how it should've sounded to start with. You'll get used to it real quick.

as long as you have the valves in place, in comfort mode you won't have any issues with most exhaust mods

Thanks for All the replies! Followup question: Is there a preferred brand for mid-pipes or they are all the same?

I can't speak for everyone else, but given that it's literally just a metal pipe, i think the only potential differences would be in finish. With that in mind, I went CTS because it was the cheapest. I would have probably shelled out more money if there was a cat or resonator on there, but i didnt think the extra cost on a plain midpipe was worth it. I dont care about the finish because unlike anything under the hood, literally no one will ever see this.

what ever is cheapest. I got the ROW audi pipes because I wanted the street cred but all are about the same. Also keep in mind for further modding some downpipes will replace your mid pipes. I think Iroz and STM are the main 2. If you are planning on going with either of them you may not want to buy midpipes that can't be used once you upgrade.

Most mid pipes will be pretty similar to one another, with that being said you have Uni tune's why not go Uni for mid pipes? I think Uni makes quality products, but ultimately I chose Uni for mid's because everything else on my car is Uni so why not continue to whore my car out to them? lol. Plus you know they have thought about their DP (when it gets released) and mid pipes together for fitment if you want to go beyond stage 1.

My full stage 2 in comfort mode with the valves closed is truly comfortable. Quiet for conference calls and dates lol.

Move to sport and it’s a rowdy girl.

Get it. I daily drive mine with the sport exhaust and Unitronic mid pipes and you only notice it in sport probably a 15-20% increase like everyone else has said on the forums. Sound is more pronounced at WOT. If you like the sound now, you’ll love it with mid pipes! It’s also really easy to install.

I have them on my daily. I have the hi flow cats too. Which I would def recommend. With valves closed it’s barely noticeable. But as soon as those valves open, it’s a popping mean beast!

For those running catless midpipes, do you smell fumes from exhaust gas?

Why would you? Unless you have leaks due to improper install. Would be pretty hard to screw up the install though lol

Just dropped my car off at Audi Concord for oil pan leak. They were trying to tell me that because of my 034 mid pipes they were not going to cover the leak under warranty. After some back and forth they eventually agreed to cover under warranty, but something to think about. Why a simple mid pipe mod would have anything to do with an oil leak is beyond me...

+1. Not worth the time or stress on you to return there. I had a 5k oil change and the 10k free service done at a dealer and asked after the services if they had given the car the TD1 and they had not. The 10k service had an ethanol gauge on the dash. There's another dealer worthy of your business, guaranteed.

To OP, only reason not to do midpipes is if you don’t want it louder at all. I’d say 10% increase. Zero drone. Zero smell.

In sport mode with the valves open it is about 15% louder than stock.. burbles/crackles a bit more too which is sweet (not obnoxious by any means).

In comfort mode it feels just like stock to me

I installed my Unitronic mid-pipe last night. Really nice product....I wish there were instructions with the packaging (or marking left/right side on the pipes...I had to find out the hard way....). Some of the bolts are tricky to get to. You will need flex head ratcheting wrench (12mm+13mm).
I can tell the sound improvement right away at dynamic mode and can confirm once more that comfort mode sound did not change. I assume the funny burnt smell will go away after a few drives.
