Wish i had the space and time to DIY mine but i let a shop handle it and it was definitely worth it.
I'm strongly considering this in the next 18 months.
It WILL be w/ a DSG - and here's why.
My back and hips can't take it anymore. I want an S4 Avant as my daily, and something I intend to own for a long time, and drive a LOT.
I've put about 135k miles on my current B7 A4 Avant 6mt - all in about 4.5 years (owned six, sat for 18mos). Probably 40% of those miles have been in stop-and-go traffic. First was in Seattle area, and now DC. Apparently I'm drawn to the traffic capitals. Current situation is working in DC during the week, and driving to upstate NY for the weekends.
I've now got a manual fun car in the garage now that more than satisfies my need to row the gears. And, the B7 will be with my daughter through HS, so it won't be too far ;)
Still undecided how I want to get to a completed S4 Avant - myself, shop, or pair with another enthusiast. The latter seems like the best approach for overall satisfaction. Anyone between NY and DC - I'm sure we could work something out.
In the end, I think the cost is worth it. My B7 Avant is still the best daily car I've ever owned, and the B8 platform is even better. No better blend of fun, function, and form. Even 30k for a built-to-spec, low-mileage, and reliable S4 Avant seems a better buy than anything else out there.
