Looks great man - great work.

Be sure to thoroughly document the tail lights as I have a set on the way as well and I would very much like to piggy back on your hard work rather then struggle-bus through it myself .

You're car looks great. You should feel pretty proud; first shop to do this took months. Hope the guy who paid out the ass for that one never sees our threads...

I'm strongly considering this in the next 18 months.

It WILL be w/ a DSG - and here's why.

My back and hips can't take it anymore. I want an S4 Avant as my daily, and something I intend to own for a long time, and drive a LOT.

I've put about 135k miles on my current B7 A4 Avant 6mt - all in about 4.5 years (owned six, sat for 18mos). Probably 40% of those miles have been in stop-and-go traffic. First was in Seattle area, and now DC. Apparently I'm drawn to the traffic capitals. Current situation is working in DC during the week, and driving to upstate NY for the weekends.

I've now got a manual fun car in the garage now that more than satisfies my need to row the gears. And, the B7 will be with my daughter through HS, so it won't be too far ;)

Still undecided how I want to get to a completed S4 Avant - myself, shop, or pair with another enthusiast. The latter seems like the best approach for overall satisfaction. Anyone between NY and DC - I'm sure we could work something out.

In the end, I think the cost is worth it. My B7 Avant is still the best daily car I've ever owned, and the B8 platform is even better. No better blend of fun, function, and form. Even 30k for a built-to-spec, low-mileage, and reliable S4 Avant seems a better buy than anything else out there.

I found it here actually! There seems to be plenty for sale now within that price range or cheaper.

Nothing wrong with a DSG! I often wish my S4 was a DSG because the power comes on so quick being dual pulley, I am the weakest leak in terms of the speed lol. I'll never be able to shift as fast as a DSG so it'd be nice in that regard. But you can't beat rowing through the gears in my eyes, so I had to have the manual.

I think any enthusiast can do this in their garage as long as they are mechanically inclined and have the time. It honestly is not that difficult as there is literally no fabrication needed. The only pain in the ass is the wiring and even that is not too difficult and is even less of a chore if you are doing DSG. I'd be happy to lend a hand or answer any questions.

This probably isn’t the response I needed to hear! Hahaha!
Chicken vs. egg - if you did this all over again, which is better to start with, the A4 Avant or the S4? I really want B8.5. So, if I started with a well-cared for B7 Avant, could I literally swap in the B8.5 S4?

I tell it how it is :D Do you mean B8 avant? Coming from someone who owns both.. the S4 is awesome because you can actually go out and buy one. But the S4 swapped A4 avant is just SO much cooler , lol. Obviously I'll take the avant any day.

If you started with a B8 avant, and were to want to swap in a b8.5 s4, you would need to source a b8.5 allroad body harness as a lot of the connectors and modules and such are different between the b8 and b8.5. Or you could start with a b8.5 allroad and then a b8.5 s4 swap would be relatively simple and not require a full body harness removal. Generally going b8 to b8 or b8.5 to b8.5 is the easiest. But depending on what options the candidate car and donor car have can make it more easier or difficult as well.

Yeah, I’ve considered just going for the S4 sedan. However, the Avant is the only car that checks all my blocks.
So, maybe the best course is to buy a solid and well-optioned All Road. Drive it for a while and swap when the right time comes.
The only B8.5 features I know I like are the aesthetics. What are the other advantages over B8?

The amount of money and time that would require to do it,

Get an 2.0 allroad and tune the hell out of it. They can push 400-500hp

I’m fine w/ the time/money. I honestly am not interested in a heavily modded 400+ hp 4cyl. I’m interested in the most effective and reasonable way to get to the goal. Sounds like I’ve got a good staring place.

Yeah, FAR less effort to get to 400hp on a 3.0t, and the torque and just power in general on a 3.0t is just so much more fun and addicting. My s4 makes 400whp with just pullies and I plan to do the same on my wagon. The wagon was IE Stage 2 when it was 2.0t and I can safely say that it is WAY more fun stock 3.0t vs. tuned 2.0t.

In terms of B8 vs B8.5. More tech on the B8.5, built in blue tooth audio streaming, better nav. It has electric power steering which has it's pros and cons, also the soundakor which are some extra wires that would need to be transferred as compared to the b8. There are probably some other things that I am missing but those are the major things that I can think of.

Absolutely love this and seeing that 3rd pedal makes me very jealous.
Regarding drivetrain, I had a Stage 3 1.8T Avant. Headline numbers were great, driveability sucked!
I would take 6-cylinder over 4 anytime. Actually, I would be happiest with a V8 and manual as I prefer NA engine response above any power numbers.

Back to the hero of the thread: This is fantastic!

Wait so the avant you swapped the S4 drive line into was a 2009? I thought for sure it was an 11/12.

I'd say the 3rd pedal is the cherry on top for this swap for sure

Yup! 2009 avant and 2010 s4 donor car. Zach Gastin and me did our swaps pretty much at the same time and both of his cars were 2012 so he may be who you are thinking of.

Ahh ok, so with the 2009 avant I assume you have the tan headliner? I just assumed by looking at it was an 11/12 when in reality it was an 09 modded to look like a 11/12.

    ???

The 09s don't look any different than 11/12? Mine was optioned with the s-line exterior and interior package so it had a factory black headliner.

Some do and some don't, for instance there was no black optics/ti-package in 2009. So that 2009 would never have come with that style of wheels (eventhough yours are obviously 20s) and I thought black window trim was reserved for titanium as well but I could be wrong. None of this matters but was curious nonetheless.

The window trim and roof rails were wrapped black. As for wheels they are 19" but the car was originally optioned with 19" peelers. I didn't know that about the titanium / black optics package though. Good to know!

    +1, I know a guy who do 3.0T swap in B7s.

No matter if 1st gen 2.0t or 2nd gen, both engine getting a 450bhp ( stage 1 3.0T), is a insane amount of money and energy. You need to change almost everything but the block. this include valve cover, balancers, oil pump, injectors, connecting rod, piston, turbo, exhaust, hpfp, intake , intercooler, name it !

Only to have a somewhat reliable 2,0T @ same figure as the 3.0T stock internals and flash tuned.

And nowadays, finding a clean s4 6mt drivetrain at the salvage yard is not impossible. I saw cheap 3.0T low as 600$ with a fixable cracked block to a low mileage @3000$.

Retrofitted b8.5 euro led tail lights this week and took the time to clean up the rats nest of wiring I've been too lazy to clean up since I got the car on the road.

    Before:

Using the DIY on this site I used the quality twist and tape method and called it done..

....JK Even though twisting and taping would be passable for some people.. I only did that temporarily to make sure that everything worked before I made any permanent changes. After getting everything loosely wired and coded, everything worked! I soldered / heat shrinked and tesa tapped everything for a clean install. Can barely tell anything was done except for the yellow repair wires.

What I ended up with in the bcm2 corner of the car (still need to tape some wiring back up, but its mostly done..)

    And final product!

For anyone doing this conversion, I found it easier to run 1 extra wire from each tail light to the bcm2 for each extra pin on each tail light. The diy also was confusing to me as to what wires needed to be tapped into. I was able to figure it out and tapped into them at the bcm2 so here are the four wires:
    Code:
    Left outer:
Pin 3 tap into pin 11 tan connector bcm 2 (feeds from gray pin 3 left inner)

    Left inner:
Pin 2 tap into pin 6 tan connector bcm 2 (feeds from gray / black pin 2 left outer)

    Right outer:
Pin 3 tap into pin 10 black square connector bcm 2 (feeds from gray pin 3 right inner)

    Right inner:
Pin 2 tap into pin 12 tan connector bcm 2 (feeds from black green pin 2 right outer)

Probably last update for a little bit, finally got the last of the wiring done (except rear wiper bc I am lazy lol) and got the interior buttoned up!

I had to pull over one of the trunk lights that was not in the S4 harness, I had to pull over the 12v outlet that the s4 trunk did not have, and the power wiring for the window antenna converter noted below. I noted the wiring for this and will add it to my word doc and post it here.

I was having keyless entry issues yet again, so that prompted me to figure out the keyless system. Turns out, the BCM2 has an antenna that daisy chains off of the side window antennas. This cable was damaged during the swap so it explains why my keyless has always been so spotty. So after figuring out it used the side window antennas, that prompted me to dissect the antenna on the a4 harness and I determined it was much easier to get the wiring swapped over than I had originally anticipated. I am not sure how it is on non-nav cars, but even though the MMI system is different on 09 vs 10-12. The sirius / radio unit is in the same location (in the rear left section of the trunk). The only difference on the 2009 is that the sirius and radio are their own separate modules, on 2010-2012 they are the same module. The wires themselves were the same, just the connectors from the unit to the window antenna converter were flipped. So I just had to repin the sirius module side of the wire, plug them in on both ends, as well as plug in the antenna adapter and huzzah!! 100% functioning radio and keyless works flawlessly now.

    Some complete interior pictures:

So now that the car is 99.5% functional and put back together, it's time for go fast parts! I have the CTS super charger and crank pulley sitting here in the box, will be ordering the IE Double Pulley tune this week!

So I started digging into the rear wiper wiring and discovered another weird oddity about my car. Not sure if it's because it's a 2009 or because maybe it had some option that changed the clock spring set up, but my a4 avant stalks work with the s4 clock spring. I was under the understanding that the s4 sports diff clock spring was physically incompatible with the a4 wiper stalk assembly. But mine went right together, I just installed it with the s4 clock spring onto the car and everything fit and worked perfect. No faults, everything works as expected and I anticipate the rear wiper will work once I wire that in (two wires to the BCM1). I couldn't find a kostal or valeo brand on either of the clock springs. Both had an "LK" logo on them though.

Proof of no faults using the a4 wiper stalk with the s4 clock spring:

Here are the part numbers of the working stalk (2009 a4) and clock spring (2010 s4) combo:

And just for reference here are the part numbers for the old stalk (2010) and clock spring (2009 a4):

The two stalks side by side:

    Installed:

I went IE dual pulley last week, waiting on the MercRacing HX to show up. Between that and the rear wiper, the car will be pretty much 100% sorted and a 100% functioning s4 avant.

So as expected, I spliced in the two signal wires for the rear wiper to the BCM1, made the coding changes to 09 and 16, and the rear wiper works! And I did not have to buy a new wiper stalk. And with that, the wiring and work to make this a complete functional as if Audi built it B8 S4 6-speed wagon is done! Everything works =D The ONLY thing that is not there is the rear wiper washer. I did not run the line as A) it did not work that great to begin with and B) When I had it apart, I never thought the rear wiper would ever work again so I didn't think running the washer line was necessary. I may run it at some point just because of my OCD, I also may still just delete the rear wiper because it's cleaner without it.

I installed the Merc Racing HX last week, the power steering cooler made this a pain and I plan to relocate it at some point.

Posting up my most recent Auto-Scan for reference, in case anyone needs coding etc.. Any faults are because something is actually broken, or is as a result of the MMI 3G+ conversion. There are ways to get rid of these faults but I've been too lazy to figure it out lol. Only fault that is new to me is the 6C back up cam fault, but the camera works so I'm not worried about it.

    8R0 denotes Valeo
    8K0 denotes Kostal

Some a4s with ADS came with the Kostal 8k0 units. but I couldn't find one to test at a reasonable cost since mine was the 8RO Valeo unit. I theorized it might work in my thread, but had no way to verify.

So your a4 had ADS (or maybe another option(s) that required the Kostal). Very cool to know that it worked.

Car looks sweet man. Great work across the board.

And I fixed my thread on the BK stalk. Had it right in my original write up where I bought the q5 stalk, just put the wrong part number on the post when I got it to work. Good catch.

Thanks man and thanks for the insight!! Yeah it makes no sense why my car came with the Kostal spring.. It did not have ADS but it is a Prestige so yeah maybe there was some option that required the Kostal spring. I think the options the car was equipped with were: Audi Side Assist, MMI Navigation, Bang & Olufsen, Advanced Key, Dual zone Climate control.. I think that's it (I don't know that well which options were standard on A4s and what were upgrades).

I think the options the car was equipped with were: Audi Side Assist, MMI Navigation, Bang & Olufsen, Advanced Key, Dual zone Climate control.. I think that's it (I don't know that well which options were standard on A4s and what were upgrades).
Mine is also a prestige and has all those options except side assist. Not sure why blind spot monitoring would make a difference but who knows. Its audi. I don't think many at audi could tell us why.

Big thumbs up. Need to chat with you on tail lights. Got all my current stuff done and they're up next.

Wish I was east coast. Would be fun to check out yours and avantagg's in person.

just got through all the updates, and man what a rewarding experience to get this all sorted out. I would love to do this, but would need a whole lot more time than I have now, not to mention someone to do the work with me. Better yet, let me know when you want to sell

Side note: I see you're from Hackettstown, I grew up that way, went to Newton High School!

Figured it was time for an update..

Bagged the wagon a few weeks back. Found a deal on the Accuair B8 Sport kit and eLevel that I could not turn down. Also upgraded to OEM RS5 20s while I was at it. With the B8 sport kit I was able to retain the factory mag ride and I am pleased to say it rides very similar to how it did previously.

This was my original trunk set up (3 gal seamless tank with 2 Viair 400c compressors)

But found a good deal on a new 5 gal Accuair ENDO-CVT that I could not turn down. Cleaned up the clutter quite a bit, but I still have to tuck the wiring some. It is unbelievable how quiet the tank is. (For those who don't know, the compressor and valves are built into the tank)

In other news the car just hit 112k miles and has been SUPER solid. Only issue that I have had was a bad thermostat. Entertaining the idea of a possible respray over the winter to make the body mint again. Nogaro possibly?

Will be at Avantoberfest in a few weeks. Hope to see some of you there

looks great. RS5 and airride man you guys make it hard to want to leave my car alone.

Wish I could make Avantober (even the west coast option) but not gonna happen this year. Your gonna be the bell of the ball.

Nogaro would be sweet. Been thinking of wrapping mine same or nardo.

    Been a little while..

Did the B8.5 front end facelift over winter. Brand new OEM S4 bumper, black optics grille and fog light grilles, fog lights, OE e-codes. Hood, fenders and all brackets were picked up used. Had it all color matched, and then wrapped in Xpel Ultimate Plus before making the trip down to Helen, GA for Alpine Volks Fair.

Got selected for Mutt's Nuts showing (basically out of all the cars in town over the weekend, 75 were chosen for the show)

    Carbon Fiber Mirror Caps

Went back and forth for a while on what I wanted for a vanity plate, went with SWAPPED

Holy Moly, what a journey.... Really getting the itch to swap the 2.0T out for the 3.0 in my sedan... Yes it's not an Avant, but going the route of sourcing a totaled S4 with an intact Powertrain+Drivetrain is way better than trying to find a proper S4 that may or may not have been molested (most definitely has been for sure, FBOs are dime a dozen on this platform). I really want to meet this monstrosity in person and marvel at it :D
