    034 e85 stage 1 tune / TCU quick review

Got both tunes flashed on Friday.

2018 rs3 with midpipes and brisk er10s plugs. Otherwise stock. Wagner evo3 intercooler, 034 4” intake and 4” inlet planned

The highest praise I can give the ECU tune is that it feels at least as smooth as stock. Cold starts on the first try, normal idle. Part throttle is fantastic, easy to modulate, tip-in is perfect. As someone that has tuned cars before (turbo vr6 on DTA, s2000 flashpro) I can see that a lot of work went into this. It’s not easy to do.

Wastegate rattle is minimized over stock file. I’d say it’s zero now with the stock main cat.

Both flaps open all the time in dynamic, creates drone at idle. I’m not sure it sounds any better before the cam switchover. Could live without it.

Throttle lift pops are very natural

Power is extremely strong. I have no plans to validate actual results until I dyno the stock hardware vs the IC / intake / inlet addition. I’ll be sure to update with that once complete. Feels totally stock during spool until you realize the wastegate isn’t going to open at the stock file pressure. 3500-7400 is spectacular. Feels like a big naturally aspirated setup. Big, open smooth pull. Huge change from my stock file running on a 91 / 100 unleaded blend.

TCU file seems good, much firmer and faster shifts in dynamic.

Overall I’m extremely happy with both and look forward to the top end gains from 1+

My stg 2 review so far is very similar. The tcu tune is spot on and highway cruising is outside of the drone window.
Ecu changes are very linear. Car is faster and doesn't have the spike feel. May be slower than stg1 e85 with fbo actually since I only have dp and not fbo yet.

Update: added turbo inlet and 4in intake. Car is much more responsive. I was babying it more without the intake but now its ready to go. Stg2 034 tune has been treating me well.

That’s not a terrible idea. I really want the downpipe for lower back pressure and EGTs. Without the other parts it should keep me well under the dangerous torque range

Does the TCU tune improve the shift strategy while in D and S modes? Or is it OE?

Shifts are quick, crisp and less clutch slip especially in 1st and 2nd. Engagement is still smooth. OEM+ i guess you can say.
S auto mode won't hold the gear as long as OEM under light throttle.

Low speed like 6-8mph it tries to go to 2nd gear like oem. In my parking garage it can get a little touchy at low throttle low speed. Otherwise its been great.

Glad you're loving the tune so far! We're actively working on some additional features for our DAZA tuning so glad to hear that the feedback is positive thus far!

    Thanks!

I see there's a section for Haldex tuning on the software. Are you guys offering something in the near future for that?

I just purchased the cable/module and the TCU tune. Looking forward to giving it a shot with my DS1 tuned ECU.

This is definitely something we're looking into in the future, though we do not have an ETA on its availability currently.

    Thanks for this review.

I'm just trying to decide between Unitronic Stage 1+ or 034 Stage 1 ECU tune at the moment, I'm from the UK

Anyone know if theres a 034 Stage 1+ or it just comes as 1 & 2

Anyone running the 034 tcu calibration experience any harsh upshifts going into 4->5 and 5->6? I thought it was due to running a JB4 but it does this on stock ecu as well. 1-4 shifts are perfect.

Shifts in S are perfect. Manual 4>5 and 5>6 are clunky if under load. I wanted to ask about this on the live chat

I agree. Manual is on the very firm harsh side in those gear changes when comparing it to Auto S. It does still have some very firm shifts in S occasionally.

TVS will get you guys all squared away, I learned that after tying Uni and APR’s tcu tunes.

034 support pretty much said to use their ecu tune. They can't guarantee no issues when paired with other tunes. This doesn't even play nice with the stock ecu. Starting to think I wasted my money.

Using S2E85 034 ECU/TCU, 034 engine and trans mounts, 034 dogbone, 034 chassis lockers, etc - I get good positive shifts in S or M, not jarring, with better mounts the car just moves forward instead of "up". No complaints or unexpected shifts after thousands of miles.

Just flashed the DS1 OTS tune and all the tcu issues went away. Must not play nice with my stock calibration for whatever reason.

I feel like it’s likely the same shifting as the other gears but the 4>5, 5>6 and 6>7 RPM drops are large enough that it shocks the driveline when you don’t lift. I’m on all stock mounts so I’m sure that’s also a contributor

I would have thought lower gears would be harder because of ratio. 5 6 7 closer than 1 2 3.

Upgraded mounts are a huge part of getting better shift out of a tuned tcu. The stock mounts are far too soft and you get a bang out of the drivetrain on aggressive shifts because the stock mounts are too soft to control the forces involved.

Quick update on my 034 TCU issue, it still shifts harsh in manual mode as I described before. DS1 and stock tunes all result in the same issue. Too bad 034 won't address the issue for me.
