    Weight Difference? 2.8L 12v vs. 30v

Hi, First post on this forum. I'm doing a little research and am curious if anyone knows the weight difference between the 12v and 30v 2.8L engines?

I searched and found this thread from 2016, but it is missing the 2.8L 30v and (surprisingly) the 1.8t 20v weights: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...Engine-Weights

    Thanks!

I read 317 on the 1.8 and imagine the extra valves don’t add much to the 2.8..

I posted on there about the 2.8 30V, it was not that much heavier (about 55 lbs) than the 1.8T if you took the 4 cats into account. The weight is in the iron block as the 3.0 30V is only a few pounds heavier and is virtually the same as the 2.8 30V.

Thanks for the replies. I would have thought there would be a bigger difference between the 12v and 30v given the extra valves, cams and head size...

Cams are pretty light, valves weigh nothing, so maybe 10-20lbs overall.

Old thread, but I wanted to write a quick update with good data.

I picked up a B5 12v V6 in Spring 2020 as COVID was ramping up, and I've since gotten pretty deep into those motors. I have two spare 12v's that I stripped down and I recently got a B6 3.0L 30v engine to tear down.

So, last night I weighed each cylinder head to see the difference. I did this as "apples to apples" as possible and weighed each head basically complete as pulled from the engine. Complete valvetrain including cams, cast iron exhaust manifold still installed with the heat shields. I didn't include the valve covers (but can easily weigh them) and I removed the head bolts.

    End results are:

    2.8L 12v SOHC Head: 31 Lbs.
    3.0L 30v DOHC Head: 59.5 Lbs.

This is a difference 28.5 Lbs. per head and roughly 57 Lbs. in total!

    * I'd love to get a weight for the 2.8L 30v head, but I think it's safe to say that it would be very close to the 3.0L 30v. The 3.0L has an extra cam gear, but the 2.8 has the cam chain inside.

Also to be fair: Both 30v intake manifolds are plastic (3.0L weighs approximately 9 Lbs.) whereas the 12v intake is cast aluminum and weighs about 22 Lbs.

So the Net difference between a 2.8L 12v and 30v is roughly 44 Lbs. This isn't getting into specific ancillaries like SAI pump, so give or take a few pounds from my estimate.
