    The Hawaiian Punch build

This is just a little build thread I’m putting together for my Laser red B5 avant to help keep track of everything.

August 2016 I purchased a 1999 Laser red avant 1.8t with a 5 speed Quattro and no sunroof! The car is originally from Hawaii and was super clean besides minor scratches and some clear coat peeling. I always wanted b5 wagon so I scooped up this gem with 101k with all maintenance up to date and a bunch of goodies already installed.

    IMG_0273.JPG

The car already had b5 s4 front brakes, a Miltek hfc and full exhaust, st coilovers, all new stern and 034 engine and trans mounts, forge 008, stage 1 tune, new speakers b6 s4 Wheels and probably a few more things I can’t really remember. It was set up pretty nice already but naturally I wanted to make it my own and got the itch to start modifying it. Started off little with a boost gauge, skid plate, sway bar end links metal slave rear diff mount . Then it was time to make some more power so I went out and got a Franken turbo f21 kit, Ecs rs4 clutch, used fmic and paired it all with a United motor sports stage 3 630 tune and a vr6 maf.

    IMG_0140.jpgIMG_0141.JPGIMG_0143.JPGIMG_0160.jpgIMG_0162.jpg

I finally got around to changing out those junk eBay headlights for some depo ecodes and eventually I picked up 2.0 coil packs an 034 down pipe and an IE catch can to throw in the mix. I rigged up a heat shield and fitted some stock ducts for my intake . IMG_2169.JPGIMG_1647.jpgIMG_2286.JPGIMG_0056.JPG

With the new power I wanted to beef up the brakes and tighten the suspension up so I went and got b6 s4 rear calipers 300mm rotors aNd an 034 rear sway bar. I picked up a jhm short shifter, red bfi shift knob, an electric fan kit, walbro 450 fuel pump stud conversion, some new for me wheels, a roof rack and the car was really starting to come together.

    IMG_0233.jpgIMG_1457.JPGIMG_2304.JPGIMG_2392.JPGIMG_0108.jpg

This brings me to winter 2018 I owned the car for 2 and a half years at this point and I drove this thing a ton put on 45k in that time. I kept ripping drivers seats(3) and I always loved the sport clothes so I went out and found a set for a sedan even though I had the avant I was going to make it work. Few weeks later I ended up coming across an rear sport cloth avant back seat which was perfect. I found a laser red b5s4 front bumper in really good condition that I had to have so I went and grabbed that. At some point I picked up a set of b5s4 side skirts in laser red but they haven’t made it on the car yet.

    IMG_0118.JPGIMG_0064.JPGIMG_1340.JPG

At some point last winter I was offered a fully built 058 long block with a Garrett 50 trim external wastegate and a tuned ecu for a bargain so I jumped all over. It was in a friends car that was wrecked(was actually another laser red avant lol) so I had this motor sitting for a while because my current setup was fine no need to mess with it....until I blew out my rear main seal and I was in need of a new clutch as well so I figured since I have to do all this what better time to put the new motor in.

    IMG_1180.jpgIMG_0340.jpgIMG_0349.jpg57505955414__C6945A2D-A283-47AE-8E5B-E3018E8166B0.jpgIMG_0409.jpgIMG_0701.jpgIMG_0643.JPGIMG_1029.jpg

Motor was in and I had street lethal which is now boost source in lindenhurst NY fab up an intake and down pipe for me. The car ran pretty rich with the tune that was in it so I took it to a local tuner waynespeed in Oceanside NY for some Dyno tuning

    https://youtu.be/hiSt-1FgrkA

It made like 310hp 360 torque on 93 then I went back and got it tuned on e50 and made 347hp and 360 torque. With all this new power I was going to need more stopping power so I went and found a set of 17z which still aren’t on the car yet lol. The cars name is Hawaiian Punch but everyone calls it the money pit so I figured I’d embrace it.

    58319144473__F9664141-6AC3-4DDC-B29D-B463D2E3230A.jpg59217242097__CFB56AD9-1056-4B7A-A1E0-18888E30EC28.jpg

This pretty much brings us up to current time(winter2019), the car was smoking a bit I was pretty sure it was the turbo and my catch can wasn’t venting to great. So I swapped out my valve cover to run an extra line to the can and I had an extra 50 trim that was given to me for free that I swapped on and it didn’t smoke nearly as much but it I was pretty sure this turbo was on it way out too. I was sick of all these little issues going on so I decided to splurge and ordered a gtx gen2 2867 .63 housing and a new Garrett 600hp intercooler.

This week I’m going to get my exhaust fixed, after adding the vband flange the flex pipe is pretty much sitting on the the ground and next week I should be back on the Dyno to see what this new turbo will make!

Got my car back from the shop a few days ago , down pipe came out minty! Always pleased with work from mike at boost source! I ordered some exhaust heat wrap, turbo and waste gate blankets to bad I didn’t get it before the down pipe was taken out but It’s not the biggest deal. I was trying to get back on the dyno before The holidays but it’s looking like next week or so I’ll be back.

Nice setup but your IATs must be thru the roof :P Another thing I highly suggest is making up a heat reflector from sheet metal for the fuel lines.( near the wheel well.

Thanks haha yeah I actually ordered some heat shroud the other day for the lines over there and I was making a heat shield for my old turbo then it blew but it shouldn’t be to much different. The turbo blanket should help a lot as well !

Nice nice need to do the same thing but yea idk I took my turbo blanket off cuz it’ll just start smoking with direct contact to turbo you’ll need something that
Won’t cause smoke or you’ll end up fabricating a custom heat shield if you have the one off the stock airbox that’s a decent piece of aluminum there to start with

Smoke is absolutely fine, same with heatwrap, it will smoke for a few km.

I went with a PTP blanket it should be alright I hope. I made a heat shield with an old street sign for my f21setup painted it and put gold wrap on one side and some rubber around it lol, I’ll probably do the same it’s pretty simple but this one is a lot tighter

A place between here and there

Turbo blankets make a huge difference. I run one and have an in-cabin IAT gauge. The IAT difference in the summer is 10-15 F degrees from ambient. Winter time is 5-10 F, with most times on par (or 1-3 degrees above) with ambient when cruising in vacuum. Forgot to place the turbo blanket back on when I went for a cruise before and the temp difference was substantial. Can't recall numbers, but I would guesstimate a 15-25 F degree difference. Heat soak is a whole other topic with idling temps getting 25 F+ from ambient without the blanket, and still a 10-15 with.

Here is a pic of my setup, to show how close the air filter is to the turbine housing and how a turbo blanket is almost, if not, an absolute must.

I hate it when my car acts like a little bitch, treating me like a bitch

Yeah it’s pretty similar, I’ll have to get it on ASAP I haven’t driven since I put this turbo on I’ve been waiting for the down pipe and tune

You pull up to the mall or car meet you don’t want it smoking over by the headlight when you pull up or if you walk away that all I’m saying functionality is one thing appearance is another ya know just be sure I would say.. I contemplated putting aluminum foil under before the turbo blanket it doesn’t have to be seen hahaha

Yeah I never put on exhaust wrap before, I see some people soaking it in water before they do it though. Hopefully it comes out nicely, probably have to skip over the section with the 02 sensors they are really close together

Yes you need to soak them in water, they stick better and you can wrap them easier, part of the reason they smoke for a bit :)

Hit the Dyno a little bit earlier, the car made just shy of 400 to wheels on a Dynojet dyno. Intake temps were through the roof cause I never got around to putting on my turbo blanket or exhaust wrap but it’s all good!
    IMG_2339.JPG

The powerband is looking pretty rad boost coming on hard right about 2500-3k should be a really fun car on the streets.

Wow, Dynojet is fucking awful it seems. This further proves there is a huge difference between European dyno numbers and US ones. You said you have a 50 trim garret t34 right? That will not do 400 whp happily even with e85 specially with high IATs. Anyway nice number :)

Negative it’s a gtx2867 gen2 50 trim is not making that boost at 3k lol I did make 346whp previously on the same dyno with that though.

This is badass how much boost you running with these numbers? And is it stock displacement?

    Thanks man! It’s was at 30psi on 50/50 e85 93 mix, it’s still a 1.8 with rods pistons and a built head.

What are you using to tune it? Did you have to scale the map sensor differently to be able to not run lean at such high boost levels?

I have maestro and I brought it to my tuner so he can work his magic. I have a dbc car so it was pretty hard for me come across some one to tune it. I think the car had an Audi v8 maf housing too but I’m not positive I run a custom one that was made in to my inlet same size as the old one.

Ah ok, thought you had a first gen , which wont make 400 whp easily. Gen2 does easily. Keep in mind DBC Motronic 3/5 is way different from Motronic 7. Totally different control strategies.

Yeah I was hoping for a little more hp out of it but it’s cool . I’m not mad it’s super fun very responsive I can wack the gas at any rpm almost and it just rips. The motor I bought had a maestro tuned ecu with it I just brought it to my tuner and he did the rest for me

Made a little bit more progress finally wrapped my exhaust, put on the turbo and wastegate blankets put some heat shroud on the stuff near the turbo nothing to crazy. I still want to make some kind of heat shield which shouldn’t be hard but, it is pretty tight in there though we’ll see how it goes

My newest addition, I bought all new bearings and was given this carbon driveshaft from a friend. It came off another a4 parts car and was sitting around forever. My old one was shot to say the least, but this new one looks pretty beast!

Did it big this time! I blew up 3rd gear shifting around 7k yesterday afternoon, I felt it grinding for a few weeks now so I can’t say I’m surprised . Good thing I have friends with spare transmissions laying around :) had the new trans in after about 2 hours. Really wish I could have found a 2.8 tranny but I’m sure this won’t be the last time this happens

Dropped off my 17z’s today to static coating in Oceanside NY to finally get rebuilt after like 9 months. They do really nice work over there If they weren’t freshly painted already I would have definitely had them powder coated as well. Headed to New Jersey motorsports park the end of March so I wanted to get a few things done to the wagon before then. Should be back to me with in a few days.

If you reroute the intake: A 90 downwards off the turbo inlet, a short straight (~5"), to a 45 degree flipped upside down to one more short straight, add the cone to that. This will place the intake cone under the passenger headlight angled 45 degrees downward, on the forward side of the rad support, exposed to fresh air, 100% out of the bay. Basically sits above the cold side fmic piping (for those with a fmic)

    1) You will need to make either a ~3.25" square or round cut through the radiator support so the 3" short straight pipe can poke through. You do not need to remove the rad support.
    2) You can run a full size filter, yet a short version like this:

In your case you may point need to point the 90 off the turbo towards the headlight area as you're turbo inlet sits next to your valve cover. My turbo sits directly behind the headlight so I point straight down.
