    ZF Transmission rebuild!! Rebuild Kit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey guys.
    So long story short.
My old trans had incorrect correlation 4-5-6.
Bought a used one, and its worse 1-2-3-4...

I dont want to buy another used trans and keep playing the guessing game.

    I want to rebuild it.

Theres a few videos out there of people rebuilding their ZF BMW transmissions.

Who here has done our Audi ones?
    My code is HLB.
Any one can point me in the right direction where I can get parts from?
    And the correct transmission model?
    is it 5hp24? 6hp26?

Would really like some input on this so i can get the kit ordered and get this transmission a make over.

Ive never tackled a transmission rebuild, and would be really interested in checking that off my list of things i want to have experience with.

any and all input is welcome.
    Thanks in advance!

    Thanks man!

Im also suspecting a coding issue.
So im looking around my area for vagcom to see if thats the issue.
I also flushed the gear fluid, but that didnt help.

Well I have replaced my tiptronic with the exact same tranemission, and all pdnrs lights were instantly red, with vag com code incompatible transmission control module, I needed to copy the software coding from to old transmission to make it work.

I didn't get incorrect gearing ratio, but I also didn't drive it before it was coded. So I would def check coding before concluding the new transmission with rebuild converter is also bad

Ive been looking online for the coding procedure.
I did the adaptation with vagcom.
I got rid of the old transmission a while ago, and I never saved the info from it...
Do i have to take it to dealer now to get it coded in?

Took it to a local shop to have it coded. coding is fine,
I will be doing a valve body rebuild, with new solenoids to see if that may fix the issue.
If thats not the case, I guess new clutch packs is what itll be!

Found this clutch pack kit- https://cobratransmission.com/master...4-up-3011005-1
Talked to the sales rep and this is what he told me would work for our Autos.
Will be getting the valve body a make over and new solenoids.
Will be posting pictures of progress once i start and get everything ordered!

Cobra comes recommended by many I would trust them.
Still sucks and bad luck that you bought a bad used transmission, used good tiptronics are easy to find with all the s4 part outs and manual swaps

I know man, after I bought it, I saw a good amount of units popping up for around for $500, and I bought this one from a scrap yard for $1000, So im not happy.
Considering buying another used one... but how long will it last me?
Im leaning more towards a rebuild, since then i know itll last at least another 100k miles

    Update-
Took it all apart, got 3 clutch packs burnt out, out of 6.
Waiting on valve body parts and new brass bushings to get here next week, a few of them are worn out.
And in sure the valve body could use a nice cleaning as the old clutch material is all over the place (could be causing blockages in the channels, and clogged filters) but ill find out next week, when i take apart the valve body. Props to the OP for having the guts to tear into his Tiptronic transmission. I hope it all goes back together okay. GOOD LUCK MAN!!

And to the guy wondering about the spare Tip Trans I have just PM me about it. It came from an ‘05 sedan I parted out like 5 years ago now

I got it all back together, and drove it.
It still didnt like being in the lower gears, 1-3, in 1st gear it would sometime hang up and "jam" as in, car would not move, it was like it hit park all of the sudden, then after some throttle, it would engage in 1st and i can drive it at low RPMs in 1-2-3.
4th gear it hooked up nicely and i had full power.
Once it was warmed up though, 4th gear would slip into 5th, which was driving perfectly.
I took it for a decent drive, and on my way home, about 5 minutes away, the transmission overheated, and it stayed in 2nd or 3rd gear, didnt know as my shift indicator on the dash was gone.

The next day, wouldnt go into gear, when it was in 1st or 2nd, it would be going reverse.
Then yesterday, i got it to move, barely, it was shaking and making grinding noises from the bell housing/TC. (TC was rebuilt...)
Not sure whether to replace the shift solenoids,
or say screw it and buy a manual swap off a friend for 1,000 delivered (probably the most reliable way to fix the transmission, get rid of the ZF they are slosh boxes).
Ive not gotten many replies on here for this, so maybe im looking in the wrong place for ZF repairs assistance...
Ive been reading everywhere, and ive not come across the same symptoms im having anywhere.
There are also no leaks from what i can see. Tonight or tomorrow ill inspect fluid and see if it may be low...

When i put new fluid in, (I didnt empty out the TC) It took 7 qts... which is odd, since the TC holds about 4qts and its a 9.5qt system... so technically I have 11qts in there, unless im missing something, or incorrect calculation for TC fluid.

If anyone can chime in on wth is going on with this thing?
I guess only thing ive not yet replaced are the shift solenoids... and ive been reading about replacing the Valve body all together, since its the B051 plate#, which is considered "obsolete"
