Anyone here pull out their engine for rebuild or timing work on their own?

Planning to replace the timing chain tensioners and pistons once winter is over. Don't have the start-up rattle but it does have a faint rattle/knocking that lasts a few minutes on cold starts. Also burning about a quart of oil every 1-2K miles. Currently at 146K miles. I'm mechanically inclined and always do work on my cars unless it's warranty or recalls. Never pulled an engine though. For those of you who have pulled the engine out in your garage without a lift, what's the best way to do it? I plan to remove the whole front end. Is it easier to remove the engine with the transmission together? And what did you use to hold the engine, a pallet? Any tips or advice is appreciated!

I've had my engine out once before, and I plan to pull it again this summer when I'm back in my hometown to do the timing chain stuff. Quite frankly its going to be rough without a lift, but if you do have an engine hoist I would say that would be your best option. Wooden pallets work just fine for holding the engine, and leaving the trans attached would probably end up leaving you with more work than you already have.

Just did a swap over the course of 2 weekends.

Everything was pretty simple but the downpipes... could not get to them from under the car or from the top. Used crows feet and they did not budge. Ended up pulling them with the engine and transmission and removing them once I gained access.

Just put it on Jack stands and start the tear down. Once everything is removed and disconnect, support the engine from the 4 loops on the supercharger (I added an extra strap around the transmission also).
Once you have tension on the straps, unbolt the subframe and let it come down as far as it can. Thar will give you clearance for the oil pan on the transmission. After that it slips right out.20191102_193330.jpeg20191102_193337.jpeg
