    Gas pumping issue solved!

For the last 2 years I've been trying to figure out why I can't freely pump gas into my tank without the pump clicking off. At first it was only certain stations and in the following months I could no longer pump at all. Not even just barely trying to squeeze the handle. It's like there is pressure that builds up and the gas wants to come back out of the filler neck. Luckily I don't have much of a commute so I've been just filling gas tanks and pouring them in every few days.

I have been searching and searching for an answer figured it was something with the EVAP system so I replace my charcoal canister recently which did nothing at all. Should have known because I had no codes. Then I found this old post from 2010 and this guy is exactly right!

See the attached picture I pulled the vent/ overflow line out and all my gas pumping issues went away. Something so damn simple, I can't believe that's all it was. You get to it through the fender liner behind the gas door.

I used to have the same issue on my B7A4 and I swear there was a filter or vent that would get gummed up/covered with dirt or road grim and it would cause that. Normally a new N80 valve and take a pressure washer all under the rear wheelwell on the gas door side and that would take care of it. Not sure about the S4, but on the B7 the N80 valve was $18 and would normally just replace every year or 2 when the car threw a evap code or had issues with pumping gas. Also found out that turning the pump upside down helped to let it actually pump. So try rotating the gas pump 180 degrees.

If you just disconnect the vent tube can dirt now get in to the fuel system?

Having that exact issue w our 07 mustang gt, though it does seem to be at one certain gas station. I guess all car have this line? What’s the drawback to taking it off?

Interesting, I'll look into that. Thanks Chris!

I think if your tank overflows it comes through this tube. It ends behind the rear wheel, haven't had any spills filling up though. Pump clicks off like normal when it's full

I think when I would hit the wheel well/wheel liner with the pressure washer it would clean off the vent and then go back to pumping good.

Same thing in my B7 A4. I completely removed the evap canister and charcoal filter which fixed the issue. I'm sure it's the same problem on all cars, air pressure build up due to something clogged, it's just a matter of what is clogged and where.
