    B8 s4 Avant build

Original post in the a4 section here https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...s4-Avant-build

Maybe I should have posted in the Avant section.

So I have a deal in place to buy a 2011 s4 swap for my 11 Avant. My Avant burns a quart of oil anywhere from 3-800 miles. Why it varies so much I don't know to be honest. No oil puddles or leaks, and I've had it professionally looked at and confirmed its the piston rings and not the turbo or otherwise. It also has 120k miles and needs timing done so its a time bomb for sure. I need a new engine so I've been looking at 8.5 a4 motors and S4 swaps as an option for a while so I generally have the scope.

I will get everything I need but not the whole car, as I don't really need the interior/lights/body/glass/brakes etc. The seats of the s4 are gone and I already have the black interior and headliner with Alcantara a4 seats so while a whole car would be nice for a full s4 swap, I can live with my interior and a s4 power-train.

I know there are a lot of question threads on this forum about s4 Avant swaps and I'm not trying to add to the hypothetical what-if pot. However, its a lot of money and its definitely not super well documented; I've read the few threads where people have done one and unfortunately the details on those threads is pretty sparse. Definitely good info and some key details, but a lot is missing.

So with that said, here is what I know I need. Some obvious parts and some not.

    Engine
    DSG Transmission
    supercharger assembly
    engine harness
    s4 radiator
    s4 intercooler
    Exhaust -headers through mufflers
rear valance (already have the right bumper)
    s4 rear differential
s4 rear axels (sport diff axels are shorter)
Additional wiring for sport diff pinned into harness
    ECU
    Gauge cluster, Immobilizer ring
    Modules

So physically I can swap the parts. Not a trained mechanic or anything of the sort but I swamped a 5 speed jdm motor into my 4 speed auto Prelude back in the day, and added the 5 speed bits like the clutch master cylinder, clutch pedal assembly, shifter linkage etc. to get it running. Wired the gauge cluster so it was always in "park" so I could start the car, otherwise the neutral safety lock wouldn't allow it. Backyard at its finest but the end result was great and incognito except for the automatic gauge cluster. The owner of the s4 has agreed to help install this if I proceed so I'm confident we can get the parts pulled (the s4 is partially stripped already) and I'm confident we could physically get the s4 bits in.

However, the electrical modules have me worried. Older Honda parts all swap, so it really was not an issue to get them running. I read that all modules need to be swapped. I wonder if that's true, partially true depending on the specific accessory, only true if going from b8 to 8.5 or ...?

Per 300zx2g35's thread (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-S4-Conversion) He went from b8 to b8.5 and updated the wiring harness from a b8.5 Allroad so 8.5 parts like the adaptive headlights would function correctly. In post # 50 300zx2g35 said "B8 to B8 is the easiest as you just need to swap over the motor/trans and the motor harness. No need to do a full teardown like I did. Then the model (Prestige, Premium plus) is just determined by the avant you pick up". Sounds like he is saying modules don't need to be swapped. He didn't go this route, so its not fact, but he is obviously very knowledgeable. VWrcer (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...ant-conversion) did a swap and said you have to do all of the modules. No explicit details and cant find a build log.

Is there a online list of the modules? - if they just swap onto the b8 harness I could move them all over. Would have to strip the interior but it might be a little more work to save a huge headache. My car is a 2011 A4 prestige, while the doner s4 is a 2011 Premium Plus. The options are similar - Nav, 3g, key-less entry, BO. My car has push to start where the s4 does not. The s4 has the ADS suspension while my car does not. Overall pretty similar though.

Any thoughts or forum links on the modules would be appreciated- this is easily my biggest road block. I don't want a car down permanently due to coding problems.

300zx2g35 thread noted the following not obvious issues
    1. "Had to swap the gas tank and evap system as the A4 had 3 lines going to the engine bay whereas the S4 only had 2 plus the evap plug was different and I had already upgraded the fuel pump in the S4". Is this a a4 to S4 issue or b8 to b8.5. I can have the s4 owner look but if anyone knows.
    2. Power and ground for electric steering (b8.5 issue so shouldn't matter)
    3. Soundactor - can run the wiring
    4. Brake light switch - switch to s4 to eliminate "Implausible signal" error for sport diff

Anyone know of anything else to consider or have threads saved with more details? I reached out to the OP's listed above and below to see if anyone will talk with me about it.

vwrcer did a swap but most of his links are dead so I cant find details
losik4 did a swap as well but only put up a few posts on it that I could find (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...1#post12663352)
GMG swap - minimal details- https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...32-B8-S4-Avant!!

Thanks for any info you care to share in advance.

From my reading, it seems that everyone so far has gone the route of complete interior strip and harness/module swap to avoid any coding etc. issues.

Following along...fellow Allroad 3.0T swap dreamer here. I think he definitely needed the brake switch out of the S4 - that hung him up a little on 300Z's swap. Post up pics - can't wait to see the progress!

So the thread I originally started had some discussion on keeping my zf8 and just swapping the motor which is interesting but I think past my ability. I think you would need a sq5 to make the swap work as the ecu would expect to see a zf and not the dsg a s4 ecu would.

In looking into this I stumbled upon this a4 to s5 v8 swap. https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...-s-B8-A4-Build

Interesting but it looks like he ran into major issues with modules, which is my big fear here.

Unfortunately, wiping an ecu isn't as easy as it sounds, and requires Audi Germany to send you the ECU files (immobilizer included) through a secure connection, that not even the dealership can do themselves. So it's an ordeal to say the least
I'll get past it, no project would be good without some difficulties I guess. Plus, it has helped me learn quite a bit about all this

I'm working on changing that currently, but otherwise it wont even pay attention to my entire transmission control unit because it doesn't like it. Entirely wiping it, or "virginizing" it is what I hope to do, and I've gotten in contact with some pretty experienced and knowledgeable people about it. It would think that the trim levels of the car as is should be the way it should be, and run entirely like OEM with immo and all.

The build is gonna happen, whether the dang ecu wants to dance or not! I did just get my rear diff in, unfortunately not sports diff. That requires a whole gaggle of additional parts and wiring, since it is electrically actuated. Ill just have to manage without it. I also told the car that it isn't getting washed until it drives itself out of my garage, so right now its absolutely filthy. Might motivate it a little.

Thanks everyone for the support, I'm really happy you all like it and I like the suggestions thus far!

The guy who I was originally going to have recode the ECU has been really sketchy and difficult to get a hold of. The shop with my car, the one who was in touch with the guy to recode it, has also had enough of it. So the shop bought the software and jumped through the hoops to do so. He intends to do it himself from now. Now I have thus far told him to take his time, for the sake of cost, which is why this wasn't all done very timely

Anyway, long story short, same shop (av autoworx) intends to recode the ECU for me, and will be able to do so for anyone in the future. Virginization of the ECU, if from the same chassis, will allow it to work with whatever setup you have

It all would have been done much sooner, but the guy who was originally going to recode it spent a bunch of time wasting everyone's time
But then it all goes to shit. No need to quote it all but tldr is shop didn't come through with a solution to start the car, and likely tubed the car by leaving the windows down and the car outside.

He was obviously trying to fit the 4.2 in a car without changing any of the original a4 modules, but I think its a good example of why EVERY module should be swapped.

But I have a local owner who has a damaged s4 and we're working out the finer points of the deal. Without that deal, Id be bidding on wrecks where I'm uncertain if the wiring harness for my avant will mate up nicely to all the modules in say an a6. Thats a big gamble. At this point there are a few swaps completed with the DSG and its all known to work. Its not like the DSG is a bad transmission, but I agree all things equal the zf8 would be my preference.

Since you want people to only respond in this thread I'll repost my original response here.

I'm curious why nobody has done just a motor swap and keep the ZF8 transmission. The ZF8 is in the Q5 3.0T and SQ5. It can easily take the HP the 3.0T puts out and is IMO a far superior transmission to the S4 DSG. This whole swap would be much cheaper if you did just the motor. Less parts to buy and much less labor. Unless there is something I'm missing?

If you wanted the sport diff sure but otherwise no.

For the ecu can't you go into it with vcds and tell the ecu what motor is installed? Why couldn't you just change the 2.0 to the 3.0 and leave everything else alone?

I agree with you that I'd rather have the ZF8 than a DSG*, but I think you're asking for problems if you swap a 3.0T from a DSG-equipped donor into a 2.0T car with a ZF8. Totally speculation, but I think if you took a 3.0T and ZF8 from a Q5 or SQ5, you'd be golden. Plus, since the Q5 has a hatch, maybe you could even avoid a lot of the sedan-to-wagon harness headaches. Maybe?

*Personally, if I ever went through a 3.0T swap, I'd do a manual swap at the same time.

Good question. I wish there were some more documentation on this swap out there. I plan on holding onto my avant for a while and would love to convert at some point. It seems like the easiest route would be B8 to B8. Subscribed for more info.

Excellent logic Sean. They are essentially very similar cars. Instrument clusters might be different shape though? I know the MMI control panel and shift knob is exactly the same.

You can use vcds to go in and change what transmission is installed can't you? Can you not change what motor is installed?

In Zingrox's thread linked above once the ECU saw the wrong transmission (or saw a 6 speed manual when it was expecting a auto) it cut communication and refused to reconnect. That doomed his project.

I think if you ran a VCDS scan, even without starting the car, that communication would occur before you had the opportunity to enter any options. Maybe not if access the module first, but I don't know how you stop the vehicle from doing its own internal check, so you can get far enough into VCDS to change anything. Maybe I'm wrong but since there was no factory option for a 3.0 s4 mated to a zf that its likely to cut out immediately. With the SQ5 its probably flagged by the system if they don't come back as expected, but probably more of a soft code issue vs locking you out since both the 3.0 and zf are supported configurations. Complete speculation.

The real question is what modules trigger complete cut off of communication if they're flagged, vs. which modules can fault but still be coded/fixed? Million dollar question. If someone would just crack the ECU this all becomes moot and swaps become trial and error.

The 3.0t from a Q5 or A6 with the ZF8 is an interesting concept and definitely one worth diving into for future builds.

My concern using a Q5 would be that the 3.0t wasn't available until the facelift in 2012. I don't know much about the Q5 though so maybe it kept the hydraulic power steering? If not, that route might be better suited for a swap into an Allroad.

The SQ5 is equipped with the DSG so it would be a moot point to go that route IMO.

The main issue with swapping the 3.0t comes from the fact that its ran by SIMOS 8.4 or 8.5 depending on year. Few have figured out how to crack the immobilizer on it and those that have done it are most definitely not sharing their secrets. Compare this to anything running on MED17 which can be shipped to speedosolutions and the immobilizer can be defeated for $150. Maybe even less if a shop can do it locally.

When I get the chance, I'll take a look in VCDS on the S4 and see if you can change the transmission its attached to. Something tells me it would be quite a bit more involved than just changing the coding though. A harness swap might be necessary depending on whether the ZF8 and DL501 have the same plugs. That could be an issue as well if the swap is into an A4 avant because of the power steering. Not so much on an Allroad.

I started this thread in B8 A4 Tech in hopes that someone with experience retrofitting modules can chime in as to which ones are absolutes.

Once the 3.0 swap is properly documented akin to what lettuce did for his b8.5 2.0 motor swaps, diving too deep into the pool is just asking for things to go sour. Think the right track is establish baseline straight swaps from a single wrecked vehicle, then work on individual components. Would be sweet if someone from Pacific German or forum members who have done it would share some more details on what they did. Mostly it seems super hush hush.

    The B8.5 SQ5 had a ZF8, not a DSG.

I stand corrected. It does look like the TDI in the rest of the world got the DSG. My mistake.

    s4 intercooler
    Exhaust -headers through mufflers
rear valance (already have the right bumper)
    s4 rear differential
s4 rear axels (sport diff axels are shorter)
Additional wiring for sport diff pinned into harness
    ECU
    Gauge cluster, Immobilizer ring
    Modules

(This list looks good. Not 100% on the need for all the modules. From what I was told, the ECU only looks for the cluster and possibly the steering column as part of the immobilizer system. Best way to get all the hard parts is to drop both the front and rear subframes, that way everything comes out as one piece)

(From what I was told by a couple people who went the B8 to B8 route, the only things needed were the cluster and possibly the steering column and that was only for the immobilizer system. This also probably applies to going B8.5 to Allroad (B8.5) as most of the wiring/modules will be the same)

(The modules should all swap over to the B8 harness. I know the Allroad harness I used (B8.5) all my modules swapped over onto so I don't see why B8 would be any different. But again, from my research, as long as you're not making a major change, i.e transmission swap to manual, you shouldn't need all the modules. They wouldn't hurt to have just in case, but shouldn't need them. The biggest offender I could imagine, would be the CAN gateway module, but again, I was told it wasn't needed for B8 to B8)

(This I believe was only a matter of going B8 to B8.5)
    2. Power and ground for electric steering (b8.5 issue so shouldn't matter) (Definitely a B8.5 only issue)
    3. Soundactor - can run the wiring (This is really only if you want it. The car can do without it by pulling the fuse for it. I was going for the full OEM affect which is why I wired it in)
    4. Brake light switch - switch to s4 to eliminate "Implausible signal" error for sport diff (This was a surprise to me as the part numbers were the same. Makes me think the module knows the serial number of the brake light switch)

I thanked you via PM a while back but I'll do here as well as your input is appreciated. I'll reach out if (more like when really) I have more specific questions.

I have purchased a few needed items that were missing or damaged from the doner S4
PLM V2 heat exchanger, test pipes, DSG service bits, new motor mounts. Just about have everything I need.

Trying to schedule the time off from work for early December to get this done.

Subscribed. I have a B8 avant that i wanted to do the swap on but i couldn't find any information regarding the control modules. I thought i would need a complete b8 s4 to swap everything over and because i don't have a garage it would be difficult to do, no storage space for an extra vehicle in my driveway. I kinda gave up on the idea and put up the avant for sale to buy a b8.5 S4/S5. Because of the CEL p0088 ive got not hits, so if this thread goes well i might just keep the avant and do the swap.

We have a complete S4 doner; I think we're going to swap modules just to make it easier and reduce the likelihood of communication issues. I'd like to say were going to not have to swap modules but I just don't know if that's at all reasonable. So you dont need a full car, but you would need drivetrain, exhaust, and wiring to steal the modules.

If anyone in the Portland Oregon area wants to bust a few knuckles were gonna tear into this starting next Wednesday 12-18 and go through 12-22. If we don't finish we'll meet back up in the days after Christmas. I'm fully committed to bribing anyone interested with beer and pizza.

It would be quite popular if they charge a reasonable amount. Most shops quote 100 hours of labor which is insanely high. There are documented cases where people have done it in their garage in a weekend.

Hey all, I have a thread going in the b8 S4 section currently. I am in the middle of this too. 2012 a4 and s4 with a manual trans. The s4 is stripped out, the a4 motor is out. I'm hopefully going to get the 3.0 into the avant this weekend.

I have been posting videos of the progress so if you want to follow along another build, feel free.

I'm trying to put out as much info as i can on the process so we can get more people doing this. Let me know if you have any questions on your build and good luck!

I've watched your videos. Definitly want to get some good info out there for everyone to see and build the wagon audi should have.

I'll reach out if need be but I think were getting close to the final push. Were about 85% done, maybe a bit more. Down to electrical mostly.

    So yesterday and today we

Pressure washed motor and differential, hand scrubbed with dawn
Pressure washed engine bay, also hand scrubbed with dawn
Dropped rear axle and swapped s4 limited slip and s4 axels
Swapped s4 specific parts onto the block
    New motor mounts
Test pipes - audi studs suck ass. 1 broke (luckily in half with enough exposed to remove, and another almost did. Hard to get threads to engage. Got NAPA ones that were Way better).
Dsg service with new filters, gasket, bolts, cleaned out pan. Fluid needed to be changed but no metal bits or concerns. Was able to pump on 5 quarts of dsg fluid back in.
    Power steering
Removed hatch interior and rear seat
Pulled center dash piece around shifter
    Swapped s4 shifter assembly
    Installed bfi knob
Put rear subframe and suspension back on
    Mounted 3.0 engine and transmission
Hooked up electrical and cooling lines (not all)
    Radiator, ac condenser
    Front axels
    034 endlinks
    S4 drive line

Here is the location for the hole for the differential. This matches (pretty close, maybe not exact) where the s4's is. The heat shield on the a4 has a bulge for the wiring, but you need to drill a hole in the body. I used a 1 and 3/4 bit and the grommet from the s4 wiring fit perfect.

Only 4 bolts hold the rear subframe but it's heavy enough with weird weight distribution we needed 3 jack's to get it up and bolted into place

Wow you are cruising over there. How many people are helping or is it just you?
I'm pretty much alone aside from some help form my wife to push heavy stuff around.

I am currently swapping the engine cradle/subframe from the a4 to the s4 since the s4 was dented in the crash. Then I can hopefully get the motor in.

Just me and Magoamado. His knowledge on this car and mechanical skill is impressive so that has helped tremendously. Would fully recommend him to anyone around thinking of doing this.

Awesome your wife is willing to help out but I can see the struggle as we needed both of us and 3 Jack's to get the rear subframe back in.

Your still making great progress so huge thumbs up.
