I know there's been quite a bit of chatter on the 10inch RSNAV unit replacement, but I'm curious if anybody has installed the wireless interface unit for Android Auto? All I could find were older posts and info that there were a lot of bugs in the past, wondering about the current unit though. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity...if you have a full android headunit, whats the reason to use android auto? why not just wifi-tether and have full android functionality instead of the limited version through android auto

FYI, I installed the RSNAV wireless AA/CarPlay unit in my 2016 Q5 (I use AA with Google Pixel 3 XL), and love it. Ever since install (mid-summer), rarely have I been in the stock MMI since.

I have no desire (or need) to run a full blown version of Android in my car. In fact, the main reason I wanted to install this is knowing that Audi plans to discontinue Google earth next year, and I love satellite view for navigation. Considering with AA I will ALWAYS have up to date maps, without having to worry about paying a ridiculous amount for updates, and can use Google Maps or Waze (on screen), it becomes a no-brainer for my use case.

Is RSNAV perfect? By no means. Does it accomplish what I wanted (yes and then some).

Jumping on this as I have seen several people installing the RSNAV and enjoying it. Wanted to see what I could do for my Wifes Q5 and my S4 but the site appears to be sold out and can't seem to find a place to buy. Has something happened that I am missing?

So it looks like Daniel shuts down the site for new orders when they have extended holidays.

I did just install my unit this week, Tuesday and I am loving the unit but I am having issue with the AA dongel. It appears to not work, I reached out to Daniel and expect to hear something soon.

Awesome thank for the heads up. I think I just found the note as well. Any Pics of the new set up?? Certainly has peaked my interest!

I posted a few random pics (Android Auto) above that I simply browsed through my Google Photos library that may have included the RSNAV unit in them (so they were not originally taken for the purpose of providing in this thread / not the greatest).

Awesome! How was install, pretty straight forward? Does AA work work wirelessly with your Pixel as it should, or do you have to be plugged in to usb? Can you link to the exact model you purchased? Do you have B&O?

Sorry for the questions, as you can tell, getting very serious about purchasing

On my previous Q5 I had to replace the MMI unit, so I already had experience with removing / taking the center console apart, so the install was pretty darn easy. I also replaced the cigarette lighter with a plug for the USB connection (which is nice for longer trips so you can charge and use the wired connection together), and this was the hardest part in the whole process due to the difficulty in removing the existing cigarette lighter socket.

Yes, I'd say about 90% of the time I run in wireless mode using Android Auto with my Pixel (not plugged in to usb).

This is the standalone model I bought:

    https://rsnav.com/products/3g-mmi-3g...-interface-kit

    Yes, I have B&O.

I have no regrets with the purchase. Just make sure you have unlimited data as I've been using a ton ever since installing :-)

It requires some trim tools & torx. Pretty easy install since everything is plug and play. You have to remove the glovebox to access the can bus connection as well as the CD player to connect into that harness. As i remember its a url link that gives you the install directions, i believe daniel made a youtube tutorial as well.

Only problem i had was making sure a few of the wires connections to the screen/head unit are right side up. They can be turned upside down and still fit into the corresponding connections. If you are having issues try flipping those around. I initially tested everything out without tightening everything down. it all worked great, then took a few connections off, buttoned it all up and it was giving me issues. Talked to Daniel and he straightened everything out, mentioning the connections could be upside down, which fixed my problem.

PM me if you need any advice when your installing i might be able to help. Daniel is busy guy, but gets back pretty quickly if you have any questions.

It'll be a bit easier for HAUDI-DO as I believe he is just installing the Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto Interface, so there won't be a need to remove the glove box, etc, just the center components (MMI/HVAC controls).

You'll also want to have the radio pull keys and, in a perfect world, the 3438 handle pull out hook (but trim tools can work too, just a little more "effort"). I already had the pull out hooks, but if I did not, I probalby wouldn't have bought just for this purpose.

While not directly applicable to the wireless CP/AA interface, the following full system install video I found very beneficial (the included instructions are somewhat vague).

This is correct, just installing the CP/AA box, not the full RSNav replacement unit. I just ordered the trim tools.

Thanks for the quick response, you all are very awesome!

Hey everyone, sorry for my dumb question but I cannot figure out how to answer phone calls when people call in using android auto.

I tried both the old version and the new version but when I get the pop up of an incoming call, I cannot get the selector to hover over the accept or decline option :(

I would really like to get this, but I'm concerned about audio quality. If I remember correctly, Daniel said the audio quality is not as good as OE Bluetooth connection. I have B&O btw.

Depends on if you are considering a "full" system or just the AA/Car Play unit. The "full" system can play YT directly, since it is essentially just an Android tablet with full app store access. You can, however, with the AA/Car Play standalone system screen mirror from your phone (at least with Android) to view YT on your MMI screen as well (I do so quite often while parked / waiting for my daughter when picking her up from school).

ok, its ot like ill be watching ytb, but for kids and to listen to something while driving would be nice.

I just dont understand why is he charging taxes on something that would be shipping to canada, and then here I would get taxed and charged customs again.

It won't be cheap that's for sure lolol. I'm Canada bound too... just waiting to see the new 12" module... Prefer to have a clean look to replace the stock unit.. either the 8.8" or the 10.25" or the new 12" module if it looks clean.

and how is the navigation without the touchscreen ability ? Can we do everything with the mmi principal knob ? Is there some shortcuts with the steering wheel buttons ? Thanks for your help :)

Up to this point even the current model AA/Car Play implementations by Audi directly have not used touchscreen. In a similar fashion, this too uses the MMI wheel for most actions. The only thing I really use the steering wheel buttons for is to access the Google Assistant for voice commands. There are other shortcuts as well via the steering wheel, but I don't know them off hand as I do not find it necessary to use, and in some cases, I found they can interfere with the stock MMI functionality (controls both this interface and the stock Audi interface at the same time, which can be problematic).

Thanks for your feedback. Just one last point, would you consider this system stable ? both wirelessly and wired ? The only thing who keeps me from ordering is that I've tried a RSNav installation 1-2 years ago and it was very buggy, random system reboot, drops of AA connection, etc.

That's my question with these "overlay" interfaces. As I understand it, MMI is still running underneath the carplay/AA UX. So then does it sometimes mess with other MMI settings (through the main wheel, not steering wheel controls), like climate control, audio input, etc?

I don't have a good point of reference, personally, as it relates to stability then versus now. Is it perfect? Nope. The more you use it, it can get laggy from time to time. Obviously, wired is significantly more stable than wireless. I have a Google Pixel phone, so, in terms of wireless with Android Auto, I think it is a best case scenario right now, in terms of stability. There are times where I will get random disconnects on wireless, but I would not consider them "frequent". I'm personally happy with the system but YMMV.

The RSNAV is only really "active" when long pressing the 'NAV' button to enter into the system (you can actually hear the 'relay' kick over). Since it piggy backs off of the existing MMI connections, everything is pretty discrete / mutually exclusive of one another (stock MMI versus RSNAV), so I've not encountered any issues with "interference" other than, as mentioned, steering controls. I've not personally noticed any conflicts when using the MMI Knob, climate controls, back button, menu button, etc. I'm just one user so I can't speak for others.

Finally installed...took me all of 40 minutes. Hard to sort out one set of pins but I had a 50/50 guess - I tested before buttoning up and it seemed to work fine through most functions so I assume it is hooked up correctly.

One note that was hard for me to sort out was how to get audio. Once I remember this is an overlay, I started audio and then held NAV to go into the system and my audio continued to play. I then sorted out this unit has Aux Input channel which gets me to the music apps inside Android Auto. Check that one off.

I purchased the wireless version and while I did get it connected and up and running, it will not restart and automatically connect via wireless mode. If I plug in and go to wired mode and start it up, it will start no problem and I can then disconnect usb and it still works in wireless. Weird...any thoughts here?

Lastly, did you notice the unit runs very hot? I only had it on for 5-10 minutes testing and seemed very warm to the touch. Hoping that's not an issue inside the little space I was able to place the box into.

Update: deleted all Bluetooth connections with the RSNAV wireless Android Auto unit and restarted. This time, turned off vehicle BT and then from phone, connected to RSNAV BT connection. I received the prompt on my phone with the code to connect, matched it and accepted. Turned car off and waited 30 seconds. Restarted and gave it a full ten seconds. Held NAV to enter the RSNAV menu, where I had the prompt to connect via Wireless to my Pixel XL. Hit select and AA loaded fully in 9 seconds. Now, in full disclosure, my genius ass was using the phone to record video...yes, the same phone where I was loading AA to the RSNAV. Especially the fact my phone is an og Pixel and ram is low

Anyhow, I turned car BT back on, stopped car, got out. Reentered and started the car. Gave it ten seconds to load MMI and then went into RSNAV and the prompt was again there, and successfully loaded wireless AA again. Success!

YouTube vid of the 9 second load time.

Overall, this thing is excellent. It is a slick integration and I am loving everything. I had some texts and a phone call also while driving today. Texts popped up and I could preview the text on screen or load audio via Google Assistant. Both worked perfectly. On my phone call, clear as could be and the person on other end had zero complaints so I'm thinking the echo bug is gone. Steering wheel controls work as well, holding voice button for a few seconds launches Google Assistant successfully.

Will continue playing with this but boy am I in love with this!

This may be a dumb question but i'm an Apple guy...whats the interface limitations on apple devices (phone/text interface etc)
Also anybody get the larger 10.25" screen for their Q/SQ and if not why go with the smaller (i assume cleaner install/look) but just curious.
    thanks!

Not quite sure but I can try to test with my wife's iPhone if she'll give it me :D Note that my installation is the Wireless Android Auto Interface unit, not an entire RSNAV Android screen replacement.

    Another Update:
One thing was bothering me - the Google Assistant was so loud she was screaming. I realized the Google Assistant voice mightbe a separate audio channel so when she was speaking, I lowered the volume. When she was done, the music came back on at the same level as previous to activating the Google Assistant. So, it is independent and volume can be controlled separately!

Lastly, anyone have ideas on how to modify the ring sound of an incoming call? It does not ring the MMI sound as usual, but some weird robotic one that is rather annoying. I'll deal with it but would be great to modify.

    Also, I'm on 9.1.3 version

Well now I am on the verge of pulling the trigger on this. Just curious where you installed the actual box? doesn't seem like there'd be room behind the climate control and head unit?

Also reading the PDF, did you actually have to do the vag com coding to enable that green screen? I'd be using an iphone and try to do wireless carplay.
