After looking at some more photo's, I think I get it now. That valve or solenoid is in the cam and is actuated by the adjuster magnet? My confusion is from sites that show both of these parts as an N205, when they are in fact two different part numbers.

I referenced the two part numbers for our TSI 2.0T's in my prior post.

One is the N205, the electrical component with the magnet and the push pin. This would be the solenoid, ie, the e-mag component. This is what you remove before removing the upper timing cover.
The other is the 4/3-way control valve. This is what the push pin pushes. It sits inside the end of the cam shaft, and is the object that is left hand thread and you remove with the T10352.

In the SSP 246, the N205 and control valve appear to be a single unit, and are also located alongside the cam shaft, not inside.
In the youtube vid, you'll notice the same when they display the Toyota VVT unit.
And that is what is in the EA113 FSI motors, https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...SABEgL2AfD_BwE

The two piece solution was new to the EA888 TSI motor for improved responsiveness. (to clarify, relocating the control valve was to improve responsiveness; I assume the relocation dictated the shift to two pieces)

Precisely. .... forget the " magnet" term

Solenoid is in cover/cam bracket , valve is in cam/phaser.

The confusion lies in the terminology and old vs new N205 designs.
The B8 adjuster is called "Camshaft Adjuster Magnet" on most vendor sites, not solenoid. Some include N205 describing this part, some don't. And others will show the control valve as the N205. In any case , I'm now clear on this and will be removing the N205 today to replace the upper cover gasket. Thanks!

Yeah, that ETKA calls our N205 simply "magnet" is a bit understated. The N205 is a solenoid valve, ie electromagnet device. The N205 solenoid valve output is the push pin movement that actuates the 4/3-way control valve, that valve then controls the oil flow to the VVT vanes.
Lot of valvish going on, but it's an easy language to learn. :-)

Just a quick update to this thread as i seem to get DMed about it a lot , (it must be becoming more of an issue) ...

This valve is called a few things so i will list them all here in case anyone is searching

    spool valve
    VVT valve
    4/3 valve

    it is tightened to 35 nm ( 26 foot/lbs ) and is a left hand thread ..
the 9N/m mentioned in some documentation , i think maybe by shopdap which causes many pf my DMs is referring to the 3 bolts on the N205 solenoid in front of it.

and remember if you have the cam bracket off for any reason the bolt on the exhaust cam MUST be replaced, it is 20n/m plus 90 degrees. The last thing you want is that bolt head breaking off in your engine, especially right in the timing chain area .. ( but really a bolt head breaks anywhere in an engine and its pretty well game over )

    Thank You

    happy motoring

Great post. Learned more valuable stuff here than in my searches (youtube, google, etc) over the last couple of days.
I'm getting -23° on my phase adaptation.
On clod start, car seems to idles normal (approx 1200 rpm), bit is it drops to normal idle (approx 700rpm) and the phase adaptation starts to read, acts weird and goes to -23° or so.
I'll have to do some checks. Mine's the 1.8tfsi though. They mostly carry similar parts
