    Lightweight c7 a6?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
In the interest of cost savings I think I may turn my a6 into a track car in the future and gut out whatever I can. Anyone have any idea how much weight I can pull out? I’m thinking all of the interior, 2 racing seats. Probably leave most of the dash for radio and ac, trunk carpet, etc... starts off at 4045lbs, maybe get it to 3500lbs?

Fiberglass doors and plexiglass would help but that’s full race car and not thinking of going that far. Ideally it could be put back to factory spec.

Why do that when you can pick up something like a C5 Corvette for minimal money? Would be a far better track car with more power, less weight, bigger/better brakes and parts are dirt cheap. The Audi C7/7.5 chassis cars are not balanced well for the track, they are highway/touring cars. Before you gut your A6 and turn it into a track rat, sell it and use the money to buy a car way better suited for track duty.

With enough time/money spent you can do just about anything........ As a C5 Z06 owner, I can tell you that it would absolutely destroy my 2018 S6 on the track. I recently drove a new RS5 on the track at Autobahn in Joliet as well as a new R8 V10 plus with carbon ceramic brakes. Even with the RS5 being smaller/lighter than the A6, having better brakes and more HP....... it's still not a track car. It was a bit floaty and numb at the limit and the front biased weight made it understeer quite a bit. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic/capable car but not a track weapon especially considering the price of a new one. We've all seen modded Civics that destroy super cars in drag races which is great but it's certainly not the best platform to do it with. My suggestion to the OP was completely meant to be realistic and point out a better option for a track specific car.

Exactly! I was inspired by the guy taking out his stock 2013 s6 and beating c5 vettes, full disclaimer I think it was in a novice class.

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. Especially from someone who owns both a s6 and c5 z06... Crush my dreams... .

You think tires and brakes are cheaper for a c5 z06 than an a6? I think I can get a full set of pads and rotors for the a6 for $250. But I bet the z06 brakes waaay better. I was hoping with an apr uc tune I could be around 475hp at 3500lbs.

I weighed my Z06 at the dragstrip a number of years ago (I've owned the car for over 14 years), it was 3080 with 1/8th tank of fuel without me in it. It has longtube headers and no cats which shaved some weight. The stock brakes are pretty adequate since the car is so light, the lighter weight lends itself to longer tire (and brake) life. Brake rotors and pads are quite affordable and readily available. My car has basic bolt ons, it dyno'd 391/380 at the tires on a Dynojet and ran a best of [email protected] in the 1/4 on a set of 18" drag radials. My S6 with a piggyback tuner would likely not best that ET/trap speed, so straight line the vette is faster. Factor in that it's well over 1,000lbs lighter as well and it's a no brainer that it's a far more adequate track car. I'm sure there are videos of just about any car beating another on the track, I've spent many years on/at the track and can tell you that it's driver/rider that wins races. I've seen so many people with big HP cars/bikes and killer setups turn up the most dissapointing results you've ever seen because they completely lacked the skill.

There’s always going to be someone faster in a different platform so I don’t get why people say to just go get a different brand of car.... last I checked this is an Audi forum and that’s what we like to build and tune, who gives a shit the cost or practicality. It’s just fun to build these things, and there is plenty of good reasons to build an awd car over other platforms ;)

The logical contortions there are...a lot haha.

Don't think anyone's arguing that the OP shouldn't do what makes them happy or sounds fun, but on the questions of can I get this much weight out of the car, will it be a good time on track, is this a good idea? The latter two are solid nopes for most people, and objectively I seriously doubt you could get much more than 300lbs out stripping the interior and ditching the spare. However much weight could be removed would all be from the middle and rear of the car, which would only exacerbate the handling issues of less-than-ideal weight distribution. Then you'd get to figure out how to make the car operable without all of the airbags and sensors you removed, and address suspension, transmission, and brakes that are just about adequate for spirited driving on public roads.

It sounds like an April Fool's joke come about four months late to me, but if the OP thinks it's a good time...by all means go for it and share the progress

Well, I was actually thinking drag car.... my mind always goes right to that ahaha,

So, with that said in the road course world I would think this bigger platform would be a big challenge to dial in for sure.

My suggestions to the OP were entirely under the assumption that he meant "track car" for the purpose of HPDE/road course use. I mentioned some comments about the dragstrip regarding weighing my car and showing how a light car doesn't need crazy HP to put down some good numbers. I honestly think the C7 chassis is not optimal for "track car" duty.

You can do some mods to make the S a better track car. Suspension, sway bars brakes/rotors, lighten it up a little or mod it to be like the RS plus some of the other mods.

The Vette was 4 sec faster than the S on a similar track. The RS7 was faster by a bigger margin at Willow Springs. Therefore, if you did upgrades to make it similar to the RS7 you'd have a faster track car. Not sure if that was the same driver, which as stated can make a difference, and going by FastestLap.

Yes I was thinking road track car. Just for fun really. I also have an a6 not an s6, but it can be tuned for 475hp.

With the awd, stiffer springs and Eurocode sway bars I think it handles quite well, but I’m sure on a road course it will be a different story.

Also it’s only a 130lbs heavier than an s4 which makes me think it can’t be that bad on a track (roadcourse)... I also like doing more unusual things, I find it more exciting. I do know an s4 has other advantages like a s-Tronic and more advanced diffs.

Part of my thinking too is when it gets close to 150k miles (when I plan to retire it as a daily) it will not have a lot of value and could at least be cheap fun on a track.

OP has an A6 (not sure if it's 2.0L or a 3.0L). The latest RS7 (1:24.30) beats a 2003 Z06 (1:30.30) around Streets of Willow by 6 seconds and at Hockenheim (C5 Z06 1:14.9) (RS7 1:12.6) by only 2 seconds. I cant find a Nurburing time but it's estimated at 7:50 and the C5 Z06 has done it in 7:56. The RS7 has a 200HP advantage with Carbon Ceramic brakes against a car that is basically a decade and 1/2 older and a fraction of the cost. I can't find Streets of Willow times for an S7 but I did for Hockenheim with the C5 Z06 at 1:14.9 and the S7 at 1:16.40

If the OP had an "S" car he could do some things to level the field but would be driving a more expensive car on the track which equates to more risk along with a much heavier car that will go through tires/brakes at a faster pace..... Brakes for S (and especially RS) cars are quite expensive. Many guys run a square 17" setup on C5's with upgraded pads/brakelines on the stock brakes which are dirt cheap.

I'm not attempting an argument with anyone but simply pointing out that if a person is set on tracking a car that will have to be torn apart/heavily modded to achieve a result inferior to a car with a lower cost of admission......... I'd like to at least point them in a direction that may be considerably beneficial in results and cost.

It’s a 3.0l a6. I’m not necessarily trying to be faster than a c5 Z06, just have fun. Maybe confuse some people...

Remove the spare tire, passenger seat, rear seat’s and you will remove close to 175 lbs. Remove the big battery and put a lightweight battery and you will remove another 45 lbs.

Not bad for about 30 min of work’s.

Heck... I put a solid gap on a GT350 with my "little" A5 (EFR Turbo, WMI, WPT tune) so badly he wouldn't even pull up beside me after. IF they do pull up after, the look on their faces when you explain that a little 4cyl 2.0 just destroyed their 5.2 V8 and that I wasn't even on the floor, is worth every dime and drop of sweat!!

The S6 just sounds a whole lot better doing it, which is exactly why I bought it!

    Love my Rings!!!

I am a middle aged man driving a Dakota Grey(old man beige), bone stock A6. The only sorta sporty thing about it is a set of S5 peelers.

I was driving to work early one morning and was sitting at a redlight when a Mustang pulled up next to me and started making lots of noise. I was curious how it would go, so I pulled the shifter down for sport and took off when the light turned green. Coming up to the next redlight, I wasn't even close. I had to look back to make sure he was still coming.

He again made lots of noise and I figured he'd be more ready this time so I went with launch control. Again, beat him to the next redlight, but closer.

When he caught up, he rolled his window down and said, damn, those S6s are quick.

    I said, it's just an A6.

He was like, what tune you running.

    I'm like, stock, bro.

He looked like a kid who'd dropped his ice cream cone.

I didn't want to totally crush him and tell him if he learned to drive his manual shifting car a little better he'd probably actually beat me.

I'm pretty sure if we'd have traded cars I'd still win. My A6 is the first automatic I've driven in years.

My kid has a WRX STI QRSTUV, or something like that, tuned all to hell, with a 6 speed. I can just eek out a win against him too. If we swap cars, me driving the Subbie stomps all over him in the A6.

    Pfft, kids.
