    Cracked windshield (Stress crack)

I feel pretty bummed about it knowing that this is my first time. I noticed the crack on my windshield today. There is no signs of rock chip and it looked like it started from the edge, just above the rearview mirror. I am HOPING this can be replaced under warranty. Might take it to a glass shop and see if they also agree it's a structural issue. Anyone have any experience with this?

The glass is relatively cheap Only $250 CAD. Id probably just get it replaced. Sorry that happened.

Generally glass is not covered under warranty (I had to replace my windshield just after I purchased my A6 last year at 31k miles), I've found.

Check if your insurance has glass coverage. I have $0 glass deductible for mine. If not, a glass shop may be the best, as you've mentioned. I know my dealership farms it out to a company. I wound up purchasing the glass from audiusaparts.com for far cheaper than anywhere else, had it shipped to the dealership and installed there.

    Right by the "photobucket" logo?

Yea, I initially thought so too. But they are some sensors, probably either for the dimming mirror or wipers.

It looks like there's a rock chip right in the middle of your rain sensor. Replacing a windshield isn't a big deal as long as its done right but definitely won't be covered under any warranty. Put in a comprehensive claim in with your insurance, you might even have a $0 deductible for glass, get it replaced and move on.

Glass is definitely NOT covered under your warranty. It is covered under you Auto insurance comprehensive, You could have anywhere from a $50 to $1000 deductible. I would call your agent and make sure that the windshield is replaced with the same type of OEM glass that is currently on the car. Also make sure they are using Acoustic Glass. There are a lot of cheap low quality Chinese windshields out there.

This topic comes up in every windshield glass thread.

    You do want:

    1. Acoustic Glass for sure and either:
    2. OEM ( Made by one of the companies that supply Audi OEM, AND Stamped with AUDI logo ) or OEM Manufacturer glass ( made by one of the companies that supply OEM to Audi, etc. but MIGHT NOT have the Audi logo on it ).

Car makers bid out glass contracts, so one year the S4 windshield might be made by one company, and another the next.

You do NOT want: Aftermarket glass - Made by a company other than an OEM supplier, and many times inferior. ( Might be fine for a beater car, but not a good one).

Ask your glass installer these questions before the install.

Is "acoustic" glass a factory option? Meaning there are both acoustic Audi OEM and non-acoustic Audi OEM?

I called my service advisor and he said if their glass specialist inspects and concludes that it is not cracked by any object, Audi can cover it. That appointment is tomorrow.

My friend with a Ford had hers replaced under warranty due to a structural issue. So while it is very uncommon, it can happen.

I have looked at the crack many times and there is not a single rock chip. What you see around the rear view mirror post are sensors. Sorry for the bad picture. I would rather not pay $100 deductable unless I have to.

N0, it was not an option and AFAIK, all later S4's had Acoustic glass. Check out post #14 and 50, and for some reason, I thought you could possibly see a picture of an "ear" instead of the word "acoustic" in some, but might be mistaken. https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...acoustic+glass

    UPDATE:

Went to the glass shop owned by my Audi dealership. The install guy looked at it and he immediately said it's a stress crack. No signs of object cracking it. He did say it can happen from time to time, but must not be common on our cars. Could have been defective glass as well.

My Audi dealer took pics and will go through corporate management to get it replaced under warranty and it sounded promising.
