Which Exhaust: Milltek vs AWE Touring and Resonated vs. Unresonated?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Curious to know which exhaust people have went with for their B9? Really enjoy the ability to cruise on highways with the stock exhaust and experience minimal exhaust volume, but when I'm on it hard accelerating I can get a decent exhaust note.

The two main options I'm considering are AWE Touring or Milltek. It seems like I see an equal amount of both in the community. Just want to know on a volume level if one is louder than the other and if the unresonated version is preferred to the resonated in one model or if one model drones at all.

I'd love to have a loud crackling and burbling exhaust when I want it to be, while still maintaining everyday driveability with the wife and in laws when it needs to be.

Price between the two are negligible to me, so I'm really just in it to get the right exhaust for my lifestyle.

I've been leaning towards Milltek resonated for the ability to have access to the OEM valves, but want to know how liveable is the unresonated version? I'm a sucker for crackles and pops, but I have a 25mi commute one way, so would prefer to have minimal to no drone.

    Thanks

I have the Milltek resonated and a high-flow downpipe.
Even with the valves closed, you will have a slight drone.

Valves open - the crackling and bangs are there, substantially louder than stock.
I'm sure non resonated will make those even better.

If you don't want any drone, I think non resonated might be a little too much for you.
Maybe someone who runs non resonated can shed more light on that.

I think you could save some $$$ and have a shop clamp/weld on new mufflers to get the volume and low tone you're looking for. I'd agree with Omychron and say you should either keep the center resonator or opt for a resonated version of AWE/Milltek exhaust setups. If you do just the mufflers, take the extra cash and add high flow cats and downpipes down the road, you'll probably get an even more aggressive sound plus some HP.

I have the milltek non resonated and there is only slight drone at certain RPM .. nothing bad at all. I love the pops and crackles how much louder it is. Im glad i went the milltek non resonated.
Next i want a high flow cat and hoping my pops and crackles get louder

I have the AWE touring and its the perfect mix of loud and quiet. Barely drones and when i get on it, its loud enough and has some good pops at the end. I paired it up with the AWE airgate intake and it made the sound even better.

i've personally never liked AWE for any platform. every platform i have ever owned, AWE was always dronier than miltek when i would hear and drive them in person.

Since you seem like the guy to ask, does Miltek make a version without valves? Curious how that would be.

@Jimminez@Nemesis can certainly assist. He runs our Milltek program and chats with the factory directly.

No they do not. At least not at this time or listed.

Thanks for all the help and clarification everyone.

Looks like I'm honestly just weighing out the new option between waiting for the 034 Motorsport Downpipe / x pipe resonator delete vs. the Milltek Catback - resonated

Again, still leaning on the full Milltek setup, but the 034 products are tempting and I feel I can get nearly 90% of what I'm looking for, for less than 40% of the price.

Initially I was in a similar boat, I decided to go for the milltek and have absolutely no regrets at all. Itís a well engineered and great sounding system. Canít go wrong with it imo.

resonated Milltek was too quiet to me, but if you want it to sound OEM with more low-end rumble and zero drone valves open or closed, that's the one to get. that's without a downpipe though. I have the silencer from the resonated kit stashed in the garage in case we ever get stage2 ecu tunes that need a downpipe and non-resonated gets too loud with a downpipe for what I want for the s4. my s3 has a turboback (AWE), it's super loud and attracts way too much attention, I don't want that for the s4, but it's fun.

I went with the Milltek non-resonated exhaust and in my opinion, it filled what the stock exhaust was lacking. It's perfectly livable in close valved mode with a deeper rumble and my neighbors don't hate me. I noticed that at around 75 mph at 7 & 8th gear, it can drone slightly under light throttle applications. Non-issue if you drive mostly in the city. With valves open, it's much louder and aggressive; the burbles, crackles, and shifts are much more pronounced.

Your tolerance to drone will probably dictate whether you go with the resonated option or non-resonated option, but I don't think you'll go wrong with Milltek as a brand overall. You can always swap out the midpipe fairly easily if you are dissatisfied with either option.
