Post The Q5/SQ5 1/4 Mile List

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
We've been talking about this for years now, so here it is- the official, easy to locate, and nicely organized 1/4 mile list!!

For those that aren't familiar, the original list is buried in the middle of the 0-60 & 1/4 mile thread...that starts out with multiple pages of debate over 'launch control' semantics. Hopefully this thread will not only serve as a cleaner and more purposeful home for the list but will also inspire more people to hit up the track for times. I also expect that we’ll start to see more modified and tracked cars as more warranty periods come to an end and used prices continue to drop.

The requirements are simple- post a picture of your time slip from a legit 1/4 mile track with proper timing equipment along with all the appropriate information about your rig. We don’t have to be super picky about this list, but a pic/vid of the car at said track displaying the same number on the window as the time slip is always a nice way to further validate things...and give us more content for the thread.

Note- let's keep this thread to results from ‘official’ tracks (ie. no Dragy/Vbox/etc. results). If there is enough interest, maybe we can do another list for validated Dragy results since that’s an entirely different ballgame with things like track prep, staging/heat soak, tire temps, etc. that don't come into play.

I have grandfathered in all the previous results from the other thread since almost all of those were considered valid one way or another over the years before many of the linked pics/attachments disappeared. I’ve also been tracking down people on other sites to get their details in an attempt to have the most complete list possible.

    Without further ado...

Looks great. Thanks for putting this together. I need to log my tune and get back to the strip. I'd like to beat your Stg1 time prior to doing a pulley or two ;)

Same here, there is not a single track in our State so I have to rely on Dragy.

We have a good track here, altitude is almost sea level, but it’s 90+ degrees here now, getting hotter every day. I’ll have to wait to late fall to get any cooler weather. No ethanol access, either, but race gas is available near the track.

Well, not all of us get to run in -5,000 DA! Haha. No, seriously- that was my first time ever running a 3.0T at the track, so I was pretty clueless. Btw- it didn’t look like you were manual shifting 2-4 at 6900 on your runs. Regardless, pick up a MPVI2, and in 5 min, I can set up your trans to maybe challenge the stage 1 record. No one has run stage 1 w/tcu yet...

No h/x and most likely heat soaked to begin with based on the 1/8 results. Also, his engine was on the way out and is currently getting replaced.

Not sure what version of the tune that was got it flashed March of last year. No heat exchanger either at the time. And yes engine was on the way out and my cats were starting to get clogged.

Manual shift 2-4? Haven’t heard of that yet. I am intrigued... as far as TCU goes, I have something up my sleeve haha

With VCDS you can turn off the auto upshift and that will allow you to run up to 6900rpm before the car goes into limp mode...so have you to get the timing right with the paddle shifters. That’s the trick with the stock TCU tune to get an extra 600rpm out of gears 2+. In S-mode you allow the auto change from 1st to 2nd then push the shift knob over to manual and change the gears manually for 2-3-4 (maybe 5) using the paddles...it’ll get busy really fast. You can see this being done in this video...

    https://youtu.be/myRYbjYSk0o

...although he allows an auto change for 1-2-3 then you can see him reach down and push the shift knob over to manual for the change to 4th and 5th.

A TCU will make things so much easier as you won’t have to manually change at all. I currently have my redline set to 7400rpm with an HPT TCU tune but my ECU tune allows for fueling/timing up that high.

It was discussed a lot in the other thread, but you just disable auto upshift with vagcom. If your tune’s rev limiter is higher than 6900, you’ll need to be on point with the shifts or else the trans limp mode will get you at 6950. Previous APR revisions had a 6900 limiter, so it was a no-brainer and basically foolproof. Auto shift 1st, and kick over to manual to rev out the rest. That was the technique used for many of the runs on the list...including the stage 1 record.

EDIT- bajan beat me to it!

I see that you have an IE Stage 1 tune. Find out from them up to what rpm you have fueling/timing and go from there with the auto upshift delete or a custom TCU tune.

I'm guessing you're collaborating with integrated engineering on a TCU tune because I called last week and they told me that they're working on a ZF trans tune

That’s great for your 1st time out with the new setup in high DA. Great job!

Where were you shifting at and are you still running the stock airbox/filter?

Thank you! I just let the trans shift in sport mode. I ended up taking your advice on the air box mod.

No weight reduction besides removing the spare tire and that cover thing in the cargo area. Stock 20 inch wheels with some off brand Discount Tire brand tires.

Had a lot of fun at the track Friday night. Great weather for August but hoping to get out once more as it cools off in the Fall. Shout out to eruben123 for walking me through the process for my first time at the track.

That is impressive given the terrible DA and no TCU. I'm guessing with some colder air and a TCU you'll be the fastest SQ out there.

Yeah I agree...PR is mild too so that’s a pretty damn good time for the conditions and setup.

Not too shabby! Are you able to run out 4th without a shift, or do you have to shift to 5th? I've always thought the SQ5's slightly worse gearing might actually pay off in the 1/4 mile if the 4->5 shift could be avoided

Congrats on the official 11 sec slip!! She's a beast

So, stock TB for this run, right?

It's hard to say exactly with the vehicle's indicated speed (I suppose Dragy's speedometer would be a better way to check), and it's not like it's easy to tell at 100+ if you're tapping the limiter just before or after the finish line . However, in the past I determined thru logs and slips that I though it was approx. 110 mph for a stock tire at 6900 in 4th.

Bro- did you look at the list?! Your entry has been on it since the thread was started months ago, lol. However, I didn't have a DA for you. Btw- you can simply link your IG post for the slip pic in the future.

@BG SQ5 Thanks!! Yes sir, this run was on the stock TB. I found the culprit of my 80mm throttle issue. The shop that did my engine swap cut my intake hose weird and it collapses under WOT cutting the power. So this is my solution for now until I figure out what to do next. IMG_20190910_102223.jpeg

Oh wow- when I was thinking intake restriction, I never once considered the tube collapsing. I’m not sure I’ve heard of that on this platform before. Regardless, you could try swapping out the stock filter for something less restrictive like an aFE. Others have put together solid intake tubes for their 80mm TBs as well.

That intake hose wasn't meant to be on the stock air box. Because of the way it was cut, under WOT the hose clamp kept slipping off. Will definitely look into upgrading the intake or at least modifying the air box.

Well, I knocked a little more than rust off last night. First time out since the record run last Oct. I’ve got the bigger Merc h/x, 3.26 PR and a slightly different trans tune (less stall for traction but more aggressive with the TCC).

It ran 11.55 and 11.56 out the gate in ~1000DA. I let it cool down for a few hours and had it really primed to go lower, but too much brake torquing killed the stall/launch...2.0 60’ went 11.89. Got right back in line, watched the IATs creeping up for 15 min, and went 11.49. I guess I should have set my goal for the season higher!

Btw- IATs were the exact same on the 11.49 as the 11.72 (2.96 PR) last year in similar air...starting at 40C and finishing at 65C. I’m convinced the switch from 2.96 to 3.26 was worth about 0.15 sec and 1 mph.

It’ll probably be another month until the cool weather comes back/stays, but the plan is to be on the 104 tune then.

    That's bonkers man! Congrats

At what point do you yank out the passenger and rear seats, remove the pano glass, and realistically aim to break into 10's? 😎
