So my ac is dead and it’s getting hot out :( I bought this compressor used (in picture) and looking for some advice. My ac has electric going to it but blows warm air. It will not take a charge guessing the clutch is no good. Am I able to test this somehow with Ross Tech? Is this a direct replacement or do I have to take it to a shop and have them charge it after I’m done? I also read that these compressors are clutchless?

These compressors are clutchless--they always rotate and the solenoid valve cambers a swash plate inside to interact with the various pistons. So for light a/c applications, it's not working hard, while it's fully cambered for full on.

    I have a few questions:

    1. Do you have access to VCDS or similar to get it scanned? This would be the most helpful to see both if the G65 a/c refrigerant pressure sensor is good, or what the reading is.

    2. By "it will not take a charge", do you mean you are losing refrigerant and keep pumping more in? Is it possible you have a leak, or you have over-pressurized the system.

    3. Can you take a look at the refrigerant pressure sensor? It is located by the driver's side headlight, behind the bumper, on the side of the condenser. If you can see it, make sure it's not dirty & covered in oil. If so, that means the o-ring is damaged and refrigerant (and oil) is blowing out.

    4. When you put the a/c on, do all the fans come on?

    5. Is the ECON light on?

naw its designed for it ... BTW great questions Audibot , the answers to these go a long way and everyone should check this stuff before even posting Ac questions.

Op the following question leads me to believe you dont understand AC that well.

" Is this a direct replacement or do I have to take it to a shop and have them charge it after I’m done? "

doesnt matter if it is direct repalcement or not , if you disconnect the freo lines to that compressor the whole system needs to be dried vacummed and recharged.

this is how it is supposed to work

take it to a shop and have them discharge the system and recover the freon and oil.
make your repairs you think you need to make including installing a new receiver /dryer.
take it back to the shop have them put a vacuum on it ( see if it will hold vacuum ) if so it is not leaking .

have the correct ratio of PAG oil and freon put back in the system.

Thanks! Seems we're answering a lot of a/c questions lately! I also get the gist that OP is inexperienced, but I figure I would ask the questions before suggesting any kind of replacement.

And yes, the system is designed for full blast. It's why "LO" puts the fan on highest setting and temperature (and thus compressor load) goes to max.

this thread is not nearly as entertaining as the guy who swore up and down his compressor was running with no engine on... that was a popcorn thread for sure...

Sorry late response it’s been really rainy out so I haven’t been near the car and I’ve been busy with work but I do have VCDS and will take a look hopefully tomorrow. And I tried hooking up a can of refrigerant last year and it just wouldn’t take any of the refrigerant. I’ll take a look at the sensor tomorrow hopefully and let you know also will take pics. Same deal with question 4 I’ll take a listen tomorrow ECON light is not on.

Not accepting any refrigerant to me indicates the system is full or overcharged. But yeah, definitely need a bit more information.

FWIW, I did once have it where I had all my refrigerant, sensor was good (had changed it couple years beforehand), and no ECON light. It did turn out to be the compressor, which I bought a replacement kit from discountacparts.com (included brand new Denso compressor, oil, o-rings, orifice tube, and accumulator. I didn't see much in the way of debris when I cleaned it, but replacing it definitely did the trick.

i wonder if his swisher plate solenoid is not firing.

probably a set of Ac gauges are in order if it wont accept refrigerant.

You need an AC pressure gauge (loan one from Autozone) for a proper diagnosis (see below); maybe VCDS tool as well to read pressure sensor (if sensor faulty). And will also need ac vacuum pump for repair.
