    Broken CV joint

2011 A4 Q, first there was a TPMS error, then no drive. Then a "Transmission malfunction" in the dash LCD. Turned it off, then back on and I had drive...for about 100'. Car rolls in Park. Put on the E brake and put it in D, right front axle turns inside the CV boot, no other axle moves. Lots of noise...you can hear the little balls and some broken metal.

Dealer says there's no part # for outer CV joint. I don't know what he's smok'n cause ECS says its 8K0 498 099 B for $644. ETKA shows the same part #.

Or, here are my other options:

    GKN axle assembly for $345
    Meyle CV joint for $53
    GKN CV joint for $112

Anyone done any of those brands on an axle or CV joint?

No experience with those. I haven't used them yet, but Raxles has a good reputation and may be worth a quote.

had no issues whatsoever with the cardone reman I bought. but raxles are 299.99, GKN are OEM btw. So for $345 your getting an OEM axle.

Nice. I think I might just do the GKN axle. It's less work/mess just swapping out a whole axle.

Yea I had mine apart and saw rusty water coming out of the bearing. No point in putting that back together so I did it right then.

And mine was fine, made no noise and inside it looked good when I got it off. But there's no future in rusty water. And as you say, once the CV joint is out, the bearing is right there.

GKN is solid manufacturer. The rubber is high quality and you can’t go wrong. Don’t ever go “remanufactured” or Chinese. They can clunk and vibrate due to bad tolerances.

I agree about the Chinese axles. Absolute junk. I had one literally fall apart in my hands while trying to install it in my '99 Passat. Remanufactured axles can be a crap shoot unless you know who you're buying them from. Raxles is probably the best source for remanufactured axles, but you need the OEM core to exchange and they're not cheap. I've gotten to where I just replace the outer CV joints. It's a little more work and can get messy dealing with the grease, but at least you know what you're getting. GKN CV joints are OEM and are highly recommended. Meyle is a good brand too and at $53 that joint is a steal. However, I would still pony up the extra cash and go for the GKN joint. If the inner axle is still in good shape then you're probably fine with just replacing the outer joint. I used to replace the entire axles out of convenience, but it was becoming near impossible to find any aftermarket axles worth a damn so I started swapping out just the joints instead.

Well, I ordered the axle from RMeuropean, paid for next day shipping. The day it shipped I removed that bad axle, and just for curiosity I pryed off the big band and found the CV joint in perfect condition, all greased up, laying in the boot. The circlip had broken. Believe it or not, the dealer carries that as a part # but he didn't have one on hand. I talked the parts guy (shout out to Audi of Minneapolis) into taking one out of a boot kit and ordering one to replace it. Bent my big band back into place and put it all back together. Been driving for two days now. The new axle arrive about an hour after I was back up and terrorizing minivans again.

Its hard to know when you've pounded that CV joint on to the right place. I have the feeling that the last time I had that boot off, I might have hammered it back to far. That could slice that circlip. just a theory.
