Circuit's 2013 Phantom Black Allroad Build Thread

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Finally have some mods done to my Allroad, so I thought I would introduce myself and start a build thread!

My name is Chris and I live in the SF Bay Area. My last full build was a Mazda Protege5 and since that car, I've wanted another wagon and knew an Allroad was in my future. I sold back a MK5 Jetta TDI 2 years ago, but buying a home and getting married got in the way. My DD RSX got totaled just before Thanksgiving and it was the perfect time to get the Allroad. This was the only Prestige model within 1000 miles and had everything I was looking for - Black sport interior, monochrome exterior, etc. I settled on black even though my first choice was white. I haven't had a black car in a long time and forgot how much of a PITA it is to keep clean haha.

You can follow me on instagram: https://www.instagram.com/chrsbrnrdo/

Some photos of my Protege5 to give you an idea if how extensive the build was. Build thread link here: https://www.mazdas247.com/forum/show...-03-5-Protege5

Now lets get to the Allroad! Good place to start is the window sticker:

Some nice baseline photos of the stock (except for tint) exterior after a recent detail:

    Also did a baseline dyno:

Mod posts to follow! Goals for the car are to be a clean, bagged, OEM+ driver with multiple sets of wheels

First things first, all the lighting was replaced with deAutoLED LEDs. Basically everything except the headlights :D

The car needed brakes not long after I purchased it, so I figured I'd do a small upgrade while I was in there.

    S4 front calipers/carriers
    S4 rear calipers/carriers
    Akebono pads
    Stoptech slotted rotors
    Stoptech stainless lines

    Stock vs S4/5

The fishscale on the interior was beat up in places and I didn't really want to spend the money on Carbon pieces, so I found this awesome 3M Hex textured wrap and wrapped all of the door, dash, center console, and dash pieces.

    Comparison

Shots during wrapping and after install

Picked up an Airlift Performance setup from plim and am in the process of cleaning it up and getting some pieces Cerakoted.

Most recently, I had Simplicity in Sound replace the B&O system with a custom SQ system. I have been friends with the owner, Bing, for over 10 years and couldn't wait to get him to knock this out of the park. He took detailed photos and descriptions of the entire build, and I have captured them in this album: https://imgur.com/a/A8fVmN3

    Here are some highlight photos:

Nice job on the dash/door pieces. Been wanting to change mine out but hadn't seen anthing that really caught my eye. This is a really nice option.

Thanks! I am super happy with it. It could pass as an OEM finish :)

That P5 build was awesome, and it's nice to see another ex-Mazda driver switching over to the Avant life. My first car build was a 2001 Mazda MP3 in high school / college.

That looks great with the Gram Lights and meaty tires! I had my P5 for almost 10 years and was super active on Mazdas247, but never seen your car!

Bing does some awesome work, no personal experience, but he usually posts build logs over at diyma.com

Thanks man, I was super active on mazdamp3.com before all the forums kinda merged. I think my last post was from 2009 over there. That car went through a ton of variations, including being turbo'd at one point.

I think he doesn't post on DIYMA as much anymore because of time. Mainly facebook now since its easier.

Been a little while. Life keeps getting in the way of any big progress. I just got the car back from the body shop since it got keyed all down the passenger side. Unfortunately my dash cam didn't catch the person.

    Friends got new cars - B8.5 SQ5 and S4

The worst of the key damage

    Getting everything fixed

I have been sitting on an RS4 replica spoiler from a GB here for over 2 years. Got it painted and installed as well.

Picked up a set of OZ Formula HLT in 19x10 +32. 275/35/19 Firestone Indy 500s are on their way. Will be sitting pretty nicely once I get the air installed.

Installed brushed mirror caps and went IE Stage 2 this weekend with 034/AFE intake components. Also threw in the 034 trans insert.

Pretty sure I killed my primary O2 sensor due to the tight fitment of the socket. P0130/135. So I have a replacement sensor on the way. Once that is in and the CEL is cleared, I'll get a better idea. First few pulls have been really fun.

O2 sensor cleared the code. Not "fast" by any means, but definitely quicker than before. Dyno day scheduled for 9/28 with bags and wheels going in the week before.

You should run some logs and send to IE to see if your tune can be tweaked. Also look at ignition coils and plugs(gapped down) if you have not already. It’s really too bad that they don’t have an E85 tune yet...it’s a game changer.

Love the audio work, that’s my next step.

Definitely intend on pulling logs during the dyno runs! I did plugs just before going Stage 2, so I'll see what the guys at IE suggest. The whole reason I went with them was that the turners at IE told me they would be working on both E85 and a TCU tune close to the end of this year. Can't wait for that.

The first company to come out with an OTS TCU tune is gonna make some nice money. I want one asap after coming from a DSG car. The HP Tuners route seems like a bit of work.

Yeah I was following that thread and not too keen on it. Would rather wait for a known tuner to come out with one with more R&D behind it.

Friends photoshopped my car with pretty close to my first stage exterior goals.

Been busting my ass getting the air installed!

Everything laid out and ready for install

Replaced front passenger bumper bracket since mine was all tweaked and popping my bumper out

Comparison between 034 Density Line strut mount and stock 65k

    Front all in

    034 RSB vs stock

    Hatch setup almost done

Techflex and heatshrink on all power and air connections with quick disconnect on the compressor power/ground

Front and rear fully compressed. Tucks nicely! 19x10 +32 with 275/35/19 Indy 500s

Hopefully she'll be on the ground next weekend!

Link for purchasing the wrap? I just purchased a spare set of interior trim and not sure what to do with it, but seeing your wrap sort of made that decision for me.

Any comments on exhaust volume/droning after the IE catted downpipe install? My b6 has an 034 hfc and a magnaflow exhaust and I love the sound on it, but I love how quiet the allroad is for cruising. I want the extra power for the stage 2, but don't want a ton of exhaust noise.
