MMI engine sound settings default to quiet at car restart

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Summary: the only way to get dynamic engine sound in individual drive select mode is to reselect the option in individual settings every time i start the car. is this normal?

i typically drive with the car in Individual setting in MMI. one of my options has the engine sound set to dynamic.

Every time i restart the car the it is "quiet". i need to go into individual settings and select either comfort or auto, then go back to dynamic for the setting to take effect.
Changing the overall drive selection setting (to comfort or dynamic), then back to individual still doesn't change the engine sound option to dynamic.

this is not related to the engine/trans dynamic setting; which i know defaults to auto upon restart. and also is an easier "fix".

Not sure if it is normal, but tought it was sadely.
Only way to fix it is to get an exhaust valve module (cete, ak-racing-47,...). Those modules remember the last selected valve settings for next startup + allows you to open/close the valves manually when needed (before starting or during engine on).
Not so cheap and should of been standard, but :).

Thanks for the reply. Not the answer I wanted. I guess I was hoping for more a vcds coding option. Definitly not worth the cost of the controller to me.

This is more of a annoyance than anything. I have the milltek non-res exhaust. Switching to full dynamic is easy but a little too loud most the time. My individual setting with engine in comfort and exhaust in dynamic was a good sound balance. But is very annoying to pretty much reset what individual settings are ( every time I restart) in order to get it the way I want.

    Oh well. First world problems.

I thought the valves were always open as default when you start the car.

those of you that said it stays as it was set prior....are you sure?
In mmi individual setting/engine sound set dynamic, it says dynamic always at startup. Immediately after startup, if I change engine sound setting to auto, it's the same sound. Then if I change back to dynamic option, its significantly louder that it was just before switching to auto

100% sure if I have it set to auto and start the car I starts in auto. If I have it set to individual and I start the car it starts in individual. I have a 13 s6 tho not sure if the rs7 is different.

You need to go between comfort and dynamic and it changes. I hate it does it too. Did it on my 18 rs3 and does it on my rs7. Unless you switch between comfort and dynamic or yes probably auto and then dynamic it won’t change. If you go to individual and have the engine sound service to dynamic they wont close and you won’t hear the change. If you start the car right after the initial rev up they close as it isles down. If you go to comfort and then back to dynamic or individual if that’s how you have it set I know it will change and you will be like what the F?! Or if you start the car and it was last in dynamic you’ll notice when you pull it into drive it’s just on D not S. If you bump it back to S you’ll hear the louder deeper sound. I too hate it about these cars. The only solution was custom code. They made the valves always closed in comfort and always open in dynamic BUt even they couldn’t get it to default that way at startup. Still had to cycle but was much louder with both always open. Unfortunately Audi thinks they still need to have one always moving depending on rpm to help with drone and sound so it did sound way different when they were coded always both open. Again that was on my rs3, I’m doing unitronic on my rs7 once the Russian downpipes arrive. I’ve asked john at uni if he can code the valves the same as custom code

Yes, definitely an issue in my 2018 RS6, as well. If you start the car in dynamic and then switch to individual (with dynamic exhaust set) it still doesn't open the valves. You have to go to comfort or auto and then back to dynamic or individual to open the valves. The other option is to go into sports mode on the trans. I wish this car had a button for the exhaust, like the R8 plus.

There are a lot of parameters that get programmed into memory with the driver position. Have you tried setting everything where you want and then re-setting your driver position?

Thank you. you both confirm that this is not a problem, but just the design of the programming. Sucks. but ill take your recommendation to select comfort or auto drive select, then go back to individual. ill report back if it works and is the easier work around.

I have not. I didn't think anything of the drive select options are smart key coordinated. Thought it was only mirrors, seat, and steering wheel position

According to the owners manual for my 2012 A7 the following get programmed to the individual key:

    Automatic climate control
    Central locking system
    Ambient Lighting
    Seat Memory
    Parking system
    Adaptive Cruise control
    Audi side assist
    Audi drive select
    Night vision assistant
    Heated steering wheel

good to know. although key based settings are a moot point for me. the second key is rarely used. it's the wife's and she has driven the car for about 10 miles total since purchased 2 years ago.

Just an update, i confirmed that after startup, switching from individual drive select to auto, then back to individual will make engine sound setting (in individual) active. As suggested, this is the easiest work around.

Same thing for dynamic mode. I just tested.

If you start the car warm in dynamic the exhaust valves are shut. If you swap to "S" they open, but when you go back to "D" they shut again. Now, if you select comfort, then go back into dynamic again, the valves are open and will remain open even if you change the transmission to "D".

I previously thought the only thing to default to "auto" at restart was engine/trans mode.

Seems as though engine/exhaust sound also defaults to "auto" at restart, regardless of drive select mode setting when car was shut off.
