    Ians rare b5 build

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I picked up this b5 last winter to be a fun daily for winter as I only had a convertible foxbody at the time. I got it on trade with someine right down the street from me. At the time I couldnt be more happy, but after driving it I quicly learned it had been used and abused. I will add pictures as soon as spossible!

Everything wrong when I got the car, 240,000 miles.. Thats more than it would take to go to the moon.
Last owner hit a deer leaving the hood and grill damaged
    cats had been cut off
both rear wheel bearing were far over due
    valve cover gaskets leaked bad
throw out bearing was making noise
the trunk had a dent in it
    Paint was far from perfect
Drivers side door had been replaced and painted at some point, along with that came someone elses rust
interior was trashed, missing panels, things unscrewd and left, broken misc parts
central locking pump broken (turned on but only locks gas door and drivers side rear door
The passanger side rocker looks like somone put and axe through it
rear spring on passenger side snapped a coil
Passenger side front seat no longer heated
    hand brake didnt work
    air bag light on
rear abs had been CUT OFF
    drivers side headlight didnt work.
missing the gas pedal, last owner taped a peice of wood or plastic too it.
the radio was ripped out with the amp
heat didnt work much at all
one wheel was spray painted black for some reason and it looked terrible
all wheels were badly curb rashed
    car didnt drive stright

Thats all I can remember as of now, and yes.. That is a LOT wrong with it. But being a rare Aquarell green I had to save it!

Now that I have had the car for over a year now.. What has happened to it? The first thing I did was weld in metal were the cats used to be. Then the standard oil change. for about a month I didnt do any more to the car, it drive pretty good, and being winter I wasnt going to work on it in the cold garage. Sometime in febuary I was in a friends back yard messing around in the snow and I blew a power steering line, luckily the pump didnt stay running and break itself from running dry. I didnt bother with trying to fix it in the cold so I left it and would come back to it. After it warmed up a few months later, I detailed the car to really clean up the paint and it looked better than ever, but still not perfect. Sometime near the end of june, the throw out bearing got really bad making a terrible screeching noise, I parked the car for the summer planning to come back to it but didnt until just recently.

So, recent maintanence, put the car in the shop on the lift and got to work, the car was from alabama originally so the michigan rust had not taken over the car. The trans came out relitivly easily (as easy as it could be for a first trans pull) replaced the clutch woth an oem clutch and pressure plate and replaced the slave cylinder. FINALLY the car was back on the road again! Not for long though, I wanted to sort out my bad rear wheels bearings. The next week I went to harbor freight and picked up a hydrolic press to press in and out wheel bearings. What should have been relitivly easy wasnt. The car came apart with ease, but the cheap press had the mount for the jack welded about 2cm off center. I ended up taking the press back and taking the bearing and upright to my local machine shop. I got a call back from them saying the bearing was wrong! Turn out I have a 95 production year car, which uses the smaller bearing size. I took the bearing back and ordered what I thought to be the right one, went to pick it up the next day and it was a cheap bearing so I told them to order a better one. I got the right brand but again the WRONG SIZE! It took four days but i got one right bearing. I had it pressed and back in the car wothing a couple hours. When putting it back together I noticed that the hand brake mechanism was compltly seized, no amount of PB blaster adn prying would break it free. Another thing I noticed was that one pad one significantly worn down than the other, so I switched the pads around and ill check out how its doing in the future. After that, the very next day I blew a coolant line! I ended up fixing that in a parking lot in below 20c temps. I got another week out of the car and I blew a power steering line again, so I got fed up and replced it with steel line to end my problem hopfully for good. I plan on doing new bushings on everything I touch from now on, I want to have a brand new feeling car to make it last another 200k.

I plan on updating this regularly and have many mods and maintancence things planned in the very bnear future! I just bought new wheels and tires along with Tein lowering springs and Bilstein sport shocks. Ill probably upgrade brakes while I have it all apart. I plan on doing S4 uprights to run bigger brakes front and rear.

For the far future I plan on adding a little life to the 12v v6, I know there arent many mods for it but I want to do something different that other people have done. I plan on doing a single rear mount turbo with its own oil and coolant loop mounted under the car. Ill run on 8psi and see how long I can get the car to live, after that engine goes id like to do a full s4 swap but thats getting way ahead of myself. Id like to make it clean and sorted before I do power mods.

Jeez. Sounds rough. Hopefully you can get that thing cleaned up! Everyone hates the 12v but I like mine, lol. Turbo sounds cool, would like to see how/if that pans out

Haha yes I agree, not a fan of them but the originals were all busted up and I needed a quick replacement. Eventually I will get some nice OEM facelift lights.

Yes! I do believe it is LY6M "AQUA GREEN" I have never seen one in person (other than mine) and only have found a few around the internet. Its the only reason I am bringing this car back to life.

It does seem to photograph similar to Jaspis Green. I wonder how close they are in person.

Project for Ian: Confirm you paint code, then score a photo of yours next to a Jaspis car.

Interestingly there is no color code data( apart from the color number in the VIN- but yes it will be ly6m - metalllic as in '96 there werent similar color codes.) but yes look at the stickers in the spare tire location or the manual has a sticker too.

And yes matt, the options they put on there is not all :P

Wow! Thanks for the information! I will look in the spare tire well tonight after I get out of work! I thought the car was a 95 production date, must have one of the 96’s with the smaller rear wheel bearing.

    Wheel and suspension post!

WOW what a find! As part of bringing this car back to life I would like to do some mods without going overkill. I picked up this set of TEIN S4 lowering springs from a German guy who never used them. Got rear Bilstein shocks and springs from him all never used for $150

I also got these wheels from someone down the street from me (who actually is the one I got the car off of) he had brand new tires mounted on them. They are bonze now but I would like to have them powder coated gloss white. Let me know your opinions for having white wheels on this color car.

Hopfully those pictures are updated and working now.

Update on the LY6M A4. Shes back in the shop. Noticed last week there was fuel all over the ground in the rear of the car so I pulled her in and started to look for where its coming from. It looks like its coming from on of the fuel filter lines. not completly sure yet. Had a really hard time finding an 8mm triple square to take the filter off, I have one now and just need to get back to work on it. I am in the process of ordering new bushings for the rear sub frame and all suspension parts in the rear. If I am going to have it apart, I might as well do it right and completely take it apart.

No on the white wheels. Keep it silver or some other normal color.

Planning on running the 255/35-19 tires? Those are a bit too big for a B5. Try 235/35.

255/30/19 is also a viable option depending on the offset of the wheels if OP wants to stay with that section width.

White wheels are nice.... when clean. They show dirt way too easily. BTDT, with white wheels on my Ocean Blue B6. lol.

Had white wheels on my BMW, for a daily I dont recommend it. I changed to ceramic pads and even with a days worth of driving, they were dirty.

Yes, so I quickly realized 255/35r19 was much too wide for this platform. They did come with the wheels and are brand new. Should I just sell the tires and buy new ones? Or try and run spacers to make them clear the spindle? It looks like I can run 20mm spacers without the wheels poking out further than the quarter panel.

245 is about as much as you can run without huge fender rolling, which IMO looks like sh!t.

It has been a minute since the last update. In that time I have been working on tracking down a gas leak.. Well that gas leak turned into me removing the whole rear subframe.

While removing the suspension, I found out both rear springs had broken, passenger side had two coils snapped off and drivers side only one.

Worst of all the drivers side rear shock mount was completly rusted away. This was strange to me because I removed the passenger side first and it looks really good, not a spot of rust on it. After talking to someone about it I guess the salt likes to sit behind these things, and without really getting into them with the power washer to keep the salt out they rust right away.

I took the rusted shock mount to a buddy of mine who is a fabricator along with the good mount as reference. He is going to try and cut all the bad metal out and weld good metal in as best he can. Figured i'd try that out before I spend nearly 300 on a new one. And maybe all be the only one with custom shock mounts on my b5!

Also from that picture you can see that my bushings are so bad they are falling out, so not only am I putting my new suspention in early, I am also doing all the rear bushings while its all out. I am going with all powerflex bushings. Also going to wire wheel everything and paint it, make it look pretty because my brakes are so small you can see everything behind the new wheels.

the plan for this week is to get a new exaust welded up (the old one was starting to fall apart) and start to order alll the bushings with new hardware.

This is just the rear, I cant imagine what the front is going to be like.

This. CA junkyards (aka mine) are full of mint parts for you eastern people. Pretty easy to find someone that'll ship you a set.

96's are a really fucking weird with a lot of quirks that only exist in that year. More 90 than A4 haha. Love the paint, I'd clean her up and stab in an AEB pronto! Keep the 2.8 trans, the gearing is so much better. In fact, it's almost identical to my fwd B5 1.8T as I have a lower 3.7 final drive ratio.

Surprisingly the rest of the car looks pretty good, only things being a spot on the rockers and a spot on the door. Could be sand blasted to get the rubber undercoating off and do it right with something such as fluid film that wont trap moisture. Long term plans are to sandblast both front and rear sub frames when I get rid of the 2.8

Good plan. I feel lucky out here in Colo. we just don't get the rusty cars. It still happens but takes a lot longer.
    Need another!

Anyone have thoughts on these stainless steel lines by ECS? My old lines were rotted out and it’s time to replace them before they blow. If you have or know anyone who has these, are they worth the money? And are they worth the upgrade?

A quick update, been working at a bunch of little things on the car. I have my brake lines out on the whole car and ready to run new ones, the ones that go above the sub frame suck to do. Also discovered some rust on the car. I am prepping it to have new metal shaped and welded in, kinda sucks but its worth the effort. Also have all my suspension sandblasted and painted, I used truck bed liner and heavy coats to try and keep it from chipping and rusting.

This car had thick layer of road grime from 20+ years of improper washing
