    Question 2002 A4 B6 1.8T FWD 5 speed to 6 speed?

    Hi All,

I have looked at a lot of the post where they install a 6 speed to replace a 5 speed. Got kind of lost as they were 4 wheel drive.

Has anyone done this on a FWD 1.8T

I have remapped my ECM on the AVJ engine and have lovely set you back in the seat acceleration and tons of torque. Would like to have overdrive for the highway.

Looking for pointers in the right direction.

Thanking you in advance as all comments are appreciated.

For a 2002 five speed to six speed with front track I would check out a couple of things.

The six speed 01X may not have the same CV's as the five speed, its hard to find definitive swap info. To be sure if you pick up a B7 01X I would get the CV assemblies. It looks like the six speed S4 front CV assemblies are the same as the FWD's. Also take a good look at the ratios on the five speed vs six. Based on what published on Audiworld the B7 six speed looks like a good match.

    B6 FWD five speed

    1st 3.778
    2nd 2.176
    3rd 1.429
    4th 1.032
    5th 0.865

    Final Drive 3.70

    B7 Six Speed Front Track

    1st 3.667
    2nd 2.053
    3rd 1.37
    4th 1.032
    5th .800
    6th 0.685

    Final Drive: 3.750

I would double check on the ratios.

On a 2002 you also need to jumper the speedometer signal. I haven't verified this but the post seems legit: https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...4-VSS-from-ABS

The 01X uses a couple of different bellhousing fasteners than the five speed, best to get them from donor vehicle (ECS tuning is another option). You will also find that your cruise control wont work in 6th, your ECU wont understand the higher ratio and will refuse to allow crusie to work. I swapped in a 2004 ECU. Many tunes use a later base file that allows for sixth.

VR70's gear ratio table from that thread:

    Hi Kevin C,

Wow that is a lot of fantastic information. Probably would also need the adaptor spacer from the B7 trans?

Now to search for a doner car. Will keep all advised.
I also do not have cruise control. so I doubt I would need to adapt for that.

I used the spacer because I used a clutch from the B7. My understanding is that if you keep the stock 1.8T clutch you don't need the spacer. You could use the complete clutch from a 2.0T B7, that would require the spacer and the starter from a manual shift B7. If you go that route you need to trim down a boss on the engine block for clearance. The advantage is it allows you to keep a dual mass flywheel and give you a bit more capacity ( 240 mm od vs 228 mm od), it's also self adjusting.
