Any DIY out there for driveshaft replacement?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Did a launch today, driveshaft blew apart. I've been trying to look for a driveshaft replacement DIY... To no avail. Is it as simple as unbolting the old one and bolting the new one in?

    Is allignment important?

Not from what I've seen. It's the bearing that chews itself out of its gromet type thing and clanks around. Unfortunately the only way to replace the bearing is to replace the entire shaft.

B8 but all the S4 and s5 aside from 2010 use the same part. Along with some a4/a5 etc... It's a very common part.

Gotcha didnít know if it was a b8 issue if it was different to the b8.5. If I had to replace mine Iíd get a one piece carbon fiber that will hold up to 3000 hp and not worry again haha

Here's an interesting read. Apparently there can be issues with aftermarket, i.e., non-OEM 2-piece drive shafts. ECS has some options here.

No way in hell I'm spending $1600 one one. I'm picking up one at a wrecker off a 2016 a4 for $150 tomorrow. Found on car part.

B5/C5 driveshaft center bearings are notorious for failing. Removing it can be a complete bitch too!

Good catch on the price. I have one for a B8 A4 (ends in 101, no extra letters), but apparently doesn't fit the S4

I made sure it's the same part number on the Audi website

Good find on the recycled part. And after reading the PDF on replacing a center bearing, it makes sense to replace the entire assembly. Keep us posted on your progress and the result!

Drove all the way to Fresno to get it yesterday. When they pulled it out of the car, turns out it was bent. God damnit.

I have a new one shipping that should be here on Tuesday. There's also another one in Bakersfield I might check out tomorrow.

Well that had to be frustrating! And with a trip of ~350 miles RT to Fresno and ~550 miles RT to Bakersfield, having the new one shipped to you is starting to sound like a bargain! Hopefully your S4 will be back on the road soon!

As far as the DIY, check ECSís instructions for clutch replacement. They are very detailed with pics.

The one curious part is that they have you mark the shaft before pulling it out and then line it back when reinstalling. Not sure why though. Especially when it needs to be replaced.

Probably something to do with keeping the same balance. E36ís were the same way.

So I tried a ghetto fix.

Took off my mid pipe, heat shield, and made a new bushing by shooting window weld into the space between the bearing and carrier with a caulk gun.

I'll let you know tomorrow if it works. $20 and 1 hour it took me.

This was the play in my bearing with a completely obliterated bushing

    https://youtu.be/b-MdqFpvJGM

    Here's what I poured in

It's not pretty, but I don't see why it won't do the job.

Damn, that video certainly illustrates why it was banging around in there! It'll be interesting to see if the Windo-Weld urethane (normally used for bonding automotive windshields to car bodies) will stand up to the stresses involved in a driveshaft bearing mount.

The 3M website states: "Besides replacement auto glass installations, this adhesive may also be suitable for some non-structural body panel applications." I suspect nobody ever considered it for a driveshaft center bearing support though. Clever fix and I hope it works for you.

So I put the underside of the car back together this morning and took her for a spin. Works PEFRECTLY.

I'm going to see how long this lasts as a test. To be honest it seems more robust than the OEM bushing.

So another fix from the Cayenne world was to tear out all the rubber completely around the bearing, then zip tie like 1/2 inch long pieces of fuel line all around inside the carrier. The cayennes were notorious for failing center bearings. Did that fix on my 957 turbo and it worked perfectly

I was gonna suggest Windo Weld. Glad you found it via search. Common to use on the allroads as well.

Not yet. Moved to a townhouse recently and haven't been able to get it up on a lift. I'll have to take it to my friends shop, I've been told Driveshaft, wheel bearing or just my 034 trans mount and insert. Only hear it on decel at like 40 and below coasting in neutral.
