Previous idiot owner installed wrong oil pan with no provision for the oil temp/level sensor.
I installed the correct oil pan.
But since he did not secure the electrical connector either, it got ripped off. I put a new connector on and installed a new oil level/temp sensor.

I now still have the oil level/temp warning light.

How can I troubleshoot to determine if it is the electrical connection or a bad sensor? I had bad new sensors in past (on 2.7T engines, only the OEM brand works consistently; even other good name brands may not work).
a) can someone post the pin out/wiring diagram for the sensor/connector?
b) is the A3 sensor also critical with respect to brand name/manufacturer?
