Facelift A6 shopping for my brother. Need a little guidance.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
After years of trying to smooth talk my brother into looking at an Audi for his next used car, I've got him seriously considering an A6.
Specifically, I'd like to see him in the facelift version (2009 -2011).
I'm drawing upon my 9 years of ownership of a B5 A4 and almost 4 years ownership of an A5. As such, I want him to have the 3.0T engine and he wants the auto Quattro version.
As he checks out various candidates in the Greater Toronto area, I ask him to take a pic of the Options Codes List located by the spare tire. From there, I decode the options to see exactly how the car is optioned out. However, I'm finding a few dis-connects in this process. All of the 2009 to 2011 A6's he's looked at were stated and badged as S-Line. Yet that trim level option doesn't always come up when decoding those options codes. What am I missing here?

I briefly went through a sales brochure and I'm trying to get an understanding of the various trim levels. Premium? Prestige? Progressive? I could use some clarity on this.

Like anything else, I'm sure there's going to be a number of TSB's on record. Are there any specific TSB's that I should have my brother review as part of the shopping/buying process?

Are there any notable recalls for a 2009 - 2011 3.0T Tiptronic S-Line that I should have my brother consider?

Thanks in advance for any assistance. I'd like to make my brother's first Audi experience, a safe and confident one.
    Cheers

Good lookin’ out for your brother!!!

As for the “S-Line”....All 2009-2011 got the “S-line exterior treatment. It’s the interior bits that vary (3-spoke wheel, S-Line door sills, etc.
Trim levels are Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige. This is going to dictate standard options. Prestige is the fully loaded one from the factory. Not to say a Premium couldn’t have been optioned to fully loaded, but very rare and why?

    Recalls/TSBs
Water pump on 2009 and early 2010 had a plastic impeller. These failed often and there was a recall to swap the pump to one with a medal impeller.
    Air bag recall (enough said).
    TSBs -
    for updated PCV (lower pressure)
Secondary air injection (less than 10 years and 120k miles with check engine light).

    General maintenance-
As with all Audi’s, routine maintenance is key. Get records if done outside of Audi dealer network. No verifiable records = walk away.
Harmonic balance/lower pulley prone to failure in 100k mike or more cars.
Timing chains ok to rattle for a short duration (less than 2 seconds) any longer and you are looking at a time bomb.
Transmission serviced regularly (every 60k) even though Audi says “Lifetime”. I’m at 164k without any service and trans is starting to show signs of future failure.

That’s about it really. If you find a well maintained unit, it will last a long time. If it has been neglected, not so much.

Was there a recall for the water pump issues? I'd want to see if it's been done on my car or if I'm able too, I'm at low mileage.

A base premium A6, unoptioned, will have a "base" Bose stereo, no NAV, and no sort of options. It'll have power heated mirrors, thats about it.

Premium plus (not 100% sure here on all this, just what to expect) would probably come with NAV, some other power options, and a few small other things.

Prestige would have push to start, paddle shifters, and the upgraded bose surround system.

However it would be reasonable to expect options, in a lot of places. I have a base premium, but it's loaded with all of the cold weather options.

If you can find one, prestige is your best option. Then a premium plus, then a premium as the lowest trim level.

A true friend would talk him into an Avant :-)

At any rate, tell him to hold out for a prestige with cold weather package - the price different in the used market isn’t much between premium plus and prestige for C6s.

There are variations of each version as stated above, for instance I have a really interesting version of the Premium Plus that has base speakers, with no nav, but I do have a 4 spoke steering wheel with paddles, and rear heated seats.

Instrument clusters are also a quick way of telling what options came base on your car, I.E monotone red cluster=no stock navigation.

I did bring up the added bonuses that an Avant in any class brings but he really wasn't so interested in that aspect.
His main concerns was a car big enough for those occasional times when carry step kids and grand children. Being roomy and comfortable enough on long trips. Have enough creature comforts and yet have a reasonable track history for reliability and reasonable maintenance costs.
This is why that since he wants an automatic, I suggested the Tiptronic since I've had it in both my B5 A4 and B8 A5. And the 3.0T has been in play in many platforms for over 10 years so there must be something good about that engine.
If Audi History is any indication, the facelift version is usually the most reliable. Case in point with my 2000 A4 - most reliable and most cost effective car I've ever owned for 9 years.

DC Dawg - a Push Start/Stop button delineates Prestige? Why does the original owner state it's "Progressive"? I've seen that trim term used more then once by other used car lots.

I would blame it on poor English skills. Prestige and Progressive are pretty similar words phonetically.

I think that may be a fair assumption. All of the dealerships my brother has gone to so far are operated by people of a visible minority.

Push start/stop, backup camera and Bose in the US

I think progressive is the trim delineation in Quebec.

    Progessiv and Komfort and Technik

I think progressive is the same as prestige

Here's an example of the discrepancies I'm finding with the options codes.

    2010 A6 S-Line with an Option code of EJ4 = "S-Line"
2011 A6 S-Line with an option code of E0A = "No special edition"

I've been using this as a guide for my brother. Does it seem consistent with what's actually out there?

Honestly your most reliable source is Audi of America. You can call them and give the VIN and if the car is 7 years old or less they can give you the window sticker. Older than that they can list the trim and options.

Bring a flashlight and look for oil leaks on the valve covers, rear timing covers, and vacuum pump. Check how old the water pump/thermostat are, could be good haggling points. At 75k miles, the trans is due for a fluid change and likely hasn't been done, also a good haggling point. Same for acc + supercharger belts. Also ask about oil consumption/check exhaust pipes, although that one's harder to tell.

Based on my experience and the various bugs and recalls mentioned by Sin, I say look for a vehicle with a later manufacture date if at all possible. Mine has a very late VIN (mfg. in 2011) and despite almost 90k mi I've really been amazed by the quality and reliability. Everything works, no gotchas.

I like your thinking and agree. A close case in point would be my 2000 A4. That car was flawless for me. Aside from the normal wear and tear and routine maintenance costs, the car never failed me once. In the 9 years I never had to replace one coilpack or one injector. I new I made the right choice going with the NA 2.8L engine and Tiptronic.

This is why I'm steering my brother towards the 2011 as I believe it's the last year of the C6 platform?

Although I always make it a habit to change ALL of the fluids on any used car I buy, I have to make my case and urge my brother to do the same in the absence of any documentation that would possibly negate the need.
Are any oil leaks towards the back of the engine easy to see (even with a flashlight)?
Possible oil leaks around vacuum pump? Is this a normal scheduled maintenance item?
Isn't water pump maintenance usually every 60k miles anyway?
