    Itís finished!!! (for now)

Everything runs smoothly and took it out for a morning drive. And no CELs

Iíll have to tackle the suspension as it definitely felt like it needs some love.

A few pics from last nightís wrenching time ó swapped out the chain tensioner for a new one. Definitely an intimidating job but totally doable.

Need some help from the forums:

Update: encountering a situation where car fires when battery is connected but doesnít restart after shutdown ó doesnít even supply power to the car.

Reconnecting battery allows me to start it again and engine sounds good when running.

    Any thoughts?

Had the battery tested and all is good there.

Sounds like a relay problem to me. Try googling for similar issues. The UK TT forum is also a wealth of info.

Sounds good. Iíll see what I can find and in the meantime Iíll stick with point A to point A jaunts around the block.

I suspect something jostled loose this morning as I was able to start and stop it like 8 times when I initially dropped the battery in after the repairs. It wasnít until I test drove it and turned it off that I wasnít able to restart and turning the key to the accessories position didnít even yield power.

The weird part is I pulled the battery and had it tested at the auto store and after reinstalling it fired right up, then didnít start again after I turned it off (same no power scenario too).

Google says itís either an ignition switch, bad relay/fuse, or a loose connection so Iíll report back what I find.

Another question ó any ideas on why my convertible wonít close far enough for me to fit the tonneau cover?

The ends stick up too much for me to place the tonneau over it.

    - powered soft top
    - tried closing both manually and electronically and canít get it flush enough

    Any thoughts?

I have a manual soft top, but find there is a definite art to getting the cover to pop down into place in the rear and in the front behind the glass windscreen. Iíll try to make a video later this week if we get good weather.

Update on starting issue: I suspect itís my starter. One of the electrical connections on it looks like melted cheese wire.

Iíll pull it tomorrow and run it by autozone to test it but Iím sure itís kaput and the likely culprit

Installed a new starter tonight and the car works perfectly.

For anyone experiencing a similar issue definitely check the starter ó my old starter passed the first test at oreillyís and failed every subsequent start test when I asked that they try the test multiple times.

I found it strange the bad starter killed all power to my console, radio, etc but Iím happy to have solved this problem.

    Onto the smaller items next

Howíd you program the key? Iíve got a 2002 and a key fob that works but it canít actually turn on the car because the immobilizer. My other old and gross key actually turns the car on, but shiny new one only locks and unlocks, canít get past immobilizer when trying to use to drive.

I donít think mine has the immobilizer but hereís what I did:

Need 2 keys to do this
    - insert old key into ignition and turn on to accessories position
    - new key into driverís door lock and turn to lock
    - while inserted, press unlock button on the new key
    - lights should flash, wait a few seconds then press unlock again (lights should flash again)

    Done.

Remove old key and test functionality of the new one. I had to try this a few times to get it to work properly but was done in less than 5 min

Keep the driverís window down in case you lock yourself out

New oem drive belt tensioner going in this weekend ó I tried to reuse the original one and the belt nearly wiggled free.

Mechanically should be golden after this!

Fixed my roof closed warning light with some electrical tape.

Switch was fine but the latch wasnít making contact ó the tape gave it the extra wiggle room it needed to close it.

Only remaining light is the 65535 airbag control module fault ó researching fixes for that now

Gonna ask a stupid question here as this is my first real deep experience diving into car repairs (this project):

When updating suspension ó what else should I order/replace besides shocks?

Also ordered a new fuel filter and diverter valve as I was getting a rich fuel smell at start-up and turbo flutter on throttle lift off

It's normal to run rich. ECU adds fuel to make the catalytic converter heat up faster. As far as suspension refresh. Shocks, struts, bump stops, strut top mounts. Sway bar bushings, control arms (at least front) ball joints and inner and outer tierod ends.
You are golden after. U don't have to buy name brands just look on Amazon and save a ton. These cars are so old it really doesn't matter if it's oem or even German branded.
And do not get coil overs. That is rice. You want lowered go the proper way and get u a set of good H&R springs.

    Awesome, thank you!!

The goal is definitely to try to stick with as close to oem feel as best as possible ó not planning to lower it as itís low enough for me.

Agree! Planning on pulling the trigger on parts sometime next week.

ECS sells a front refresh kit and Iíll order new shocks/struts all around. Keeping stock ride height.

A little tardy, but hereís what Iíve got - you attach that little piece of elastic cord keeper to the two nub hooks, and then really gotta jam those side slaps down below the weatherstripping on the sides and hold it there, then go back and forth from side to side to get it right, then tuck the little piece by the glass in.

Awesome! Thank you so much ó I had no idea it required so much finesse to install it.

I was seriously considering selling it but Iíll give it another go as I was doing it all wrong.
