    Quick question about coilover install

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm not planning to install until spring, but I was just reading over the install instructions. Most of the original fasteners are torque to yield and are recommended to be replaced with new any time they are removed. How many of you guys actually did that, and did you run into any issues if not?

I reeeeally don't want to drop another $200 on the ECS install kit and was thinking I might just source a couple of the more important bolts from Audi

I did not replace any bolts and has not been a problem for me at all.
If you have a Quattro research getting rear springs out, can be a huge PIA

I also used all original bolts, no issues.

Rear springs are easy as pie if you place the spring compressors in the correct spots, good luck lol.

haha thanks! The ECS steps said to drop the rear subframe because a typical spring compressor doesn't fit. Hoping I can avoid that

These are what I used, and didn't have to drop the sub frame on either side. First side took about an hour and a half, but once I figured out where the spring compressors go, second side took 20 minutes. Screenshot_2018-12-06-14-47-57.jpg

Nice dude! Were you working on a lift? I'll be on the ground so I'm hoping I have enough clearance for the compressors and I can get to everything okay

Yeah did it on the floor of my garage. I actually didn't have the correct upper spring plates, so I had to rig one up from the adjustable one from the coilovers set that used to be on there. It was like an inch taller than normal but still didn't have to drop the subframe.

Reused all original hardware and I went pretty unconventional with getting the rear out. My friend and I stuck the handle from a low pro jack and gave it enough space to take it out. No damage and a lot easier so I’m happy

Old Guys process was great. A word though.

If you use the industrial zip ties, like I did per his recommendation, the springs are easy to get out and obviously will be compressed. I didn't have spring compressors so I was left wondering how to safely decompress the springs?

I ended up using a tow hook on the back of a truck. I turned it so the ball was upside down. I then placed the spring around the ball and on a hydraulic jack. The spring was then "trapped" between them and I was able to compress them a little more to relieve the pressure on the straps, and undo them. from there I just lowered the jack.

Brilliant! Guess I’ll add that to my list of tools/products to buy for this job.

Do you know the part number for the zip ties? I didn't see it in the thread you linked.

I forgot about compressing and using zip ties trick, I saw that posted after I went through effort of lowering each side of rear sub frame to get out.

Thanks OG. Quick question, are these reusable or should I get 6 in order to do both sides?

I bought four and only used three. I then gave them to another AZ member who also used them. After that I advised him to throw them away. I believe one or two were damaged at that point.

Nice, thanks. I'll order 4 too just in case I have an issue with one.
