    Power steering rack leaking

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Had my girlfriend's S4 in for an oil change today. When they checked the power steering fluid it was very low, and apparently has a steering rack leak. They topped it off and quoted me 2 grand to replace the entire rack. Is this something we need to fix right now or can I just keep an eye on the fluid level? Car has 97k on it. I'm normally on the A3 8v section so I appreciate any insight you may have. Thanks again

This should be done soon....rack leaks usually escalate to major leaks quickly. If all the power steering oil leaks out, the power steering pump will run "dry" and will also need to be replaced.
Also, of course, the car will be much more difficult to steer if all the fluid leaks out.

Yea probably worn seals on the rack itself. So you will have to take the whole thing out and either replace or rebuild. Word of advice don’t do donuts at full lock. It’s the easiest way to damage the seals.
What ever makes sense go with the opposite and you got it

I just changed mine, cuz had bad leak. Ran dry a few times on 25 mi trip home. But my pump is fine, luckily. I kept adding fluid every few miles, so it wouldn't get too hit. Anyway, cost me $470 for a reman unit(for my b7 a4), including $160 core. Price Will vary obviously, but did mine myself. Took me the day.4-6 hrs. Kept getting interupted cuz of rain.
