Large oil leak unsure of where itís coming from.

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
600 miles into my oil change and I back my car into my drive way letting it warm up and I noticed a trail of oil. So I check under the car and there is a fast drip. What looks like at first from the drain plug but I lift the car up and the whole underside is covered. The source of the leak seems to be near the oil filter canister but not the actual canister looks to be a tad bit higher and more on the motor. If anyone has any insight on this problem please help me out!!IMG_5941.JPGIMG_5946.JPGIMG_5945.jpg

Iím going to assume you have an oil filter housing gasket leak. Or the filter housing is cracked. Itís not the least common failure point on these engines.

There is a good DIY write up on changing the oil filter housing, as well.

And take everybody's word for it on replacing the housing. I had this issue and tried to just replace the gasket... got about 6 months before it started leaking again. It's a fair amount of work to do twice in six months... the housing isn't that salty so just bite the bullet. I bought mine from fcpeuro and that brings a lifetime replacement warranty if it ever craps out again.

The housing is a PITA to change, and I did it wrong the first time because I only went to replace the gaskets (yes you need two, the oil filter housing to the block and the oil cooler gasket while you're there). Sure enough one of the press-in nuts fell out as I went to remove the housing. Had I epoxied it back in I might have have been good, but that nut didn't hold and I started to gush oil. Don't cheap out and buy the entire housing. There is a great DIY pinned for it too so it makes life a little easier.

Hey, it really isnít a bad job to do, just messy. I just did my both gaskets and did not replace the housing. If itís not broken donít fix it is my motto! Plus if it does start leaking again Iíd just change the housing. Whole job took me less than an hour to do. Just make sure you have some nice long extensions.
