Noise when pushing shifter against far right side of shift pattern

    This is on a 2003 A4 B6 Quattro 5-speed transmission.

I am getting a noise when I shift into 5th gear as the shifter is being pushed to the far right side of the pattern. If I push the shifter to the right while in 5th gear, the noise is there too.

The noise is not there unless the shifter is being pushed to the right. It does not make the noise when the shifter is in it's 5-gear resting spot.

Maybe my explanation isn't good. Basically, if I am coasting in neutral, I get the noise if I push the shifter to the far right or far left against it's limits of travel.

The noise didn't used to be there and has gotten more noticeable lately. I tried to search for an answer, but my terms probably weren't that good.

    Any ideas?

I would say it's nothing to worry about except for you saying that it has gotten progressively worse lately. I'm a semitruck mechanic and mess with 18 speed transmission.
Do you rest your hand on the shifter?
When you push, your moving the shift fork/syncro up against the shaft in the transmission witch is spinning very fast.

I don't generally rest my hand on the shifter when cruising.
