A4 B6: Speakers + subs + amps vs HU upgrade

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hi all,

Iíve had my Audi for about a month now. I think the music quality for my music (Rap/R&B with lots of bass) isnít up to par. So I searched in different forums for this topic and I found:
    1) Speaker upgrades do improve quality of music. -but will the HU affect the quality negatively? Currently looking for good speakers on Crutchfield.
    2) Subs are a must. -but what does an amp do and is it a must as well if Iím putting subs in?
    3) HU upgrade is fairly optional -I like the old aesthetic of the car and donít want to have a modern looking HU on my A4 (not even the touch screen eBay one with Nav)

Could yíall give me some input/opinions on this?

Check out alpine pdx5, itís 5 channel amp. You can wire in rca cables from stock headunit to amp. You can use the factory speaker wiring for the rear speakers but will have to run new speaker wire to front doors since you donít have Bose. The 5 channel amp will provide power for 4 speakers and a sub. You do not have to upgrade speakers right away

Symphony 2+ will make it a little easier too, and you can ad usb audio input to it as well

I have a PDX F5 (as well as a PDX F4), it's a great amp small enough you can tuck it pretty much anywhere and plenty powerful enough. Assuming you have a Symphony II and not a II+ you can tap into the signal wires at the stock amp to get some RCA cables to connect to an aftermarket amplifier. Depending on your stock amp will determine which wires to tap into, but it should be pretty straight forward.

    1) The HU can negatively affect the sound, crap in = crap out, but with an aftermarket amp and speakers it is not going to be an issue. The Symphony puts out a flat signal, so you can use that to splice in an aftermarket amp.
    2) An amplifier is an absolute must if you are putting a sub or subs in, the stock amplifier will not cut it as far as the bass it sounds like you are after.
    3) No need to change the HU unless you wanted to do so.

I would look into a 5 channel amp, pick up new component speakers for the front doors, if you want rear speakers pick up a pair for that as well, or spend more money on the fronts and disconnect the rears. Look into a 12" sub in a ported enclosure, be aware that you will lose a good amount of trunk space doing this though. I have a single 10" in a ported suitcase in my trunk, I still have a good bit of room, but it also eats up trunk space. You can put a sealed 10" sub in the cubby behind the door on the left and then remove the factory sub (if you have one) from the door on the right and install the amplifier in there. I have both my amps behind the left door and a DSP and power distribution blocks behind the door on the right.

This is a good place to start if you decide to just install a subwoofer and see if that provides enough of an improvement that you are happy: http://www.a4mods.com/index.php?page...es/stereo.html
