    Transmission Malfunction message

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So other morning i got a transmission malfunction message on my dash. Car seemed to not want to shift. No gear indication etc.

Stopped for coffee let car sit about 5/10min went away and car worked fine. Scan car for codes....got none.

    Any insight?

Avantoberfest is tomorrow and worried now.

Symptoms..... 2nd gear is real short...shifts hard into third only when car is cold
.....had trouble going into reverse after a cold start.

    Thanks

What were you using to pull codes? VAGCOM can read TCM codes that a normal OBD2 scanner won't see.

Also, how's your battery voltage? Transmission will act in all kinds of random ways (along with random modules throughout the car) if the battery isn't at full voltage.

The hard 2nd to 3rd thing seems common. Family members own a B7 a4 and a B8 Q5, both of them have that exact same issue. Not necessarily the other ones, but everything seems smooth until a jerky 2nd to 3rd shift

Set of clutches about to go bad. Scan for pending codes you'll see some positioning issues most likely

Generic scanner. For some reason my vagcom wont work. (Think cable is bad) anyway, I'll try to scan codes again. For now its driving easy.

Mine is currently having a similar issue. Won't go into reverse unless you put it into drive and then back into reverse. Once it's warm it's okay, but just okay. It shits very hard. Dealership said fluid/filter change. It goes in on the 10th. I'll let you know if it helps. Nearly 60k miles atm if that helps at all(?).

So, I got the car back last night. They said they performed a basic transmission service. Fluid, filter, gasket. It seems to have helped a lot, but I can still notice some not-so-smooth shifts. The service manager said they found an above average amount of metal shavings in the fluid and told me just to make sure nothing changes in the feeling of the transmission. They also said I will more than likely need a transmission. Just wanted to let you know what they said. Best of luck!

My car (2009 3.0T w/ 87k miles) has always had a lack of smoothness around 3rd gear in certain conditions. However, it's always consistent and never harsh enough to be concerning. I just chalked it up to the way it is.

I had the full factory fluid and filter change done and it was slightly smoother but overall there was no change. All other gears are totally smooth under any condition. There can be some hesitation when slowing down and the transmission shifts down from 2nd to 1st (which others have noted on their cars too).

I am VERY skeptical that you would need a new transmission after only 60k miles. Sounds like “stealership” tactics to me. Plus, the rough shift between 2nd and 3rd is a well documented occurrence. On top of that, if the transmission was truly going bad, then the new (more viscous) transmission fluid would make it worse not slightly better.

I am at 160k miles and my transmission has never been touched and I drive Stormy hard! Not saying that it is by any means in great shape, but it demonstrates that these transmissions are more durable than they are given credit for.

That being said, I am going to be replacing my transmission with a ZF 6hp19 that is “bulletproof” and rated to 1000hp at the crank. Cost is about $5800 plus shipping and labor, but it addresses the shortfall of the stock transmission which is the relatively low HP rating. With my future planned mods and the high mileage of the current transmission, a failure is imminent.

I've heard that about the 3rd gear. I'm just glad that it's a common issue.

To be honest, I was thinking the same exact thing. Long story, but basically they've already tried screwing me once. Driving home tonight it drove fine and 2nd to 3rd has felt the best it has since I first purchased it. I'll have to look into that trans just for peace of mind although I doubt I would ever need it. Thank you both very much!
