    Preventative Guide Maintenance Question

Struggling with this decision. 2005 has 145k and I rarely hear any timing chain noise on startup. If I do, it only lasts about a second. What is the disadvantage of waiting until the noise becomes worse. I change the oil every 5k with Liqui-moly and keep my eyes open for any pieces. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Do the oil check valve and oil sprayer in the valley pan, see if that helps. But id do it sooner then later just because, i pulled mine did the service had a small crack in one guide had no other issues timing related.

If you are nearing 150k it is a very wise choice to plan for a timing job in the very near future since you probably already have a cracked guide or two. What I suggest is starting to save a little money each week until you can get at least the minimal parts needed. You can wait until itís disassembled to see if you need the mechanical adjusters or not.

I hit 172k and was going to have mine done and it grenaded on me a week before my appointment.

My startup noise didn't change over several years of ownership. I wrongly assumed there would be more obvious mechanical symptoms before it let go but there weren't (I did get advanced notice with some fault codes though).

Thanks for the info. I have saved up the money to do it and everything else while the engine is out. Up here in the PNW, I will store it for the winter and have it done first thing this spring.
