Post Is the 2G MMI display screen plug and play?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hi, I have no idea why my MMI screen is not working right it's just blank display of light. I made a post a while back about it https://www.audizine.com/forum/showt...goofy-emoji854 but I got no replies.

I am trying to figure out does the MMI screen have component protection on it? The dealer could not find any codes and recommended replacing the
MMI screen Part # 8T0-919-603-C and the harness part # 4E0-971-086D. I would just like some help deciding what to do here. I want to get it fixed, I just want to be sure. I don't want to buy the screen and it end up not working if the harness was faulty so I will get both. Is there a good tutorial on replacing the screen and the harness? Can someone please help me out. I don't want to throw parts at it.

I would lean towards an intermittent issue with MMI or the screen itself. I also noticed that in your images, it seems to be working at night and having issues during day. Could be just coincidence or it could be usage/conditions related/exacerbated.

Do you have access to VAGCOM?

Thank you for replying cal3thousand. Ever since the MMI did that the screen was displaying lines and blank white for 6 days straight. Then on the 6th night when I parked the car and took the key out the MMI screen was working. But it only worked for that moment and the next day it was back to the way it was again. It doesnít work at night at all that was just one random occurrence. When you say and intermittent issue with the MMI you mean the center console area with all the buttons I assume. Nothing has been spilled there or anything irregular happened to it. For the past 7 years I have been driving it just the way I was when this happened. Itís beyond me. I do have a VAGCOM I scanned the car and there were no codes. Iíll scan it again right now and update the post if there are any errors. Even the dealer could not find any logs in the car when it went for an airbag recall on September 5th. My main question was if needed to replace the screen or MMI is there component protection on the screen? Iím pretty sure the MMI has to be recoded I have been doing some research. Thanks again for your response I greatly appreciate it.

So right after I made that post above about scanning the car I took it for a drive. Before the car went in for an airbag recall it had no codes except for the one that has been there since I disabled the TPMS sensors other than that there were none. The MMI screen went bad on its own on a hot day on August 28, 2018. It worked intermittently when the car was turned off 6 days later.
Today the screen was still messed up. I drove it for 5 minutes and as usual tried to reset the MMI everytime I get in the car several times since this issue.

I reset the MMI by using the three buttons on the console. What do you know this time it did fix it... It is working for now. I have reset this MMI over a 100 times in the last two weeks...

I scanned the car once I got to my destination and there were only 2 codes. Both were related to the airbag recall performed. One was for glove box motor and the second one was for them removing the AMI from the car. These codes were not there when the MMI was bad It is most likely they are due to the service performed by the dealer. I cleared them for now. I have no idea what to do except keep my fingers crossed. 2 weeks later the thing decides it wants to work on its own. I am at loss for words right now I don't know if the screen will work when I get back in the car in 2 hours and drive it again.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

As for your original question, I'm fairly certain that the screen does not have component protection. You can get new ones for fairly cheap on AliExpress. You can also get the MMI panel circuit board over there too. (as well as eBay)

I did a full scan of the vehicle after clearing the codes and as expected there were no new faults except the TPMS sensor. I also did a optical bus scan and everything came back fine. The screen worked after the MMI reset on Tuesday and when I got in the car on Thursday it looked like this again.

After leaving it running for 2 minutes I removed the key and waited another 2 minutes. The screen was working this time flawlessly. I have no idea why is it doing that and how often will it not work and work when it feels like it. Also I am not sure if i should only replace the harness or the screen. Something is definitely acting up.

This person on youtube had a similar issue but his MMI screen actually displayed some information. According to his comments replacing the screen fixed it for him.

When I bought my a6 in 2009 it had a bad screen and looked like that...

At the time I was scared to work on it myself, so I bought a used mmi 7" Hi res screen on Ebay and let my dealer install it. Been fine for 9yrs and 160k miles.

Thank you JPJ I am selling the car. I will be sure to inform them about the problem. Itís good to know itís just the screen. I just donít understand why it works sometimes flawlessly then it doesnít. Thanks everyone for your reply I do greatly appreciate it.
