Spring Loaded Flap in OEM Airbox?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Does anyone know why there is a spring loaded “flap” in the lower half of the OEM air box. Pull the top, remove the filter and it is in the left rear corner of the box. Looks to pull air from the engine compartment?

When i put the new CF one on I too noticed this. Not only that did you check the tension in the spring? I was like that would need a Cat 5 hurrican to open...I looked it up and when pressure builds it forces the flap open blah blah.

There are some detailed explanations but basically it opens when pressure builds which again based on that spring made me wonder how often it actually opens.

I noticed this when I swapped to K&N filter. The stock panel filter was clean in that corner chamber area with the flapper. The height of the stock filter is able to close that chamber off. I guess the flapper will crack open if your filter becomes restrictive i.e. extremely dirty or wet filter.

So that means that normally, only about 75% of the filter area is actually being used. I would consider that somewhat of an intake flow restriction.

I assume if you live in an arid climate, it would be ok to cut the “dam” out so that the whole filter is utilized?

No cutting needed, K&N filter isn't as tall and creates a opening in that corner.

I have yet to open up our box.
But 25% less volume, for such a stout intake is 🤔
Got a pic of box w/ and w/o filter?

Removed the device. 2 screws and it comes out (slides up and out of its molded slots). 1.5” dia rubber plug for the hole in the corner of the box. Viola, 100% use of the air filter and not flow restriction!

I wonder if APR is doing this with there intake kit that I’m patiently waiting for...?

My MK7 Golf R's had two mods to increase better flow.
    1) Remove a snow? grate.
    2) Cut open 3? sealed vents (I used a dremel) for more air flow and more ram effect.

Off of work tomorrow, will do a DIY on what to do for most flow.
I see some top, closed grill hexagons that may improve flow (esp ram) if cut open.
But, mine is black op's, and would hate to make it ugly by s slight mistake.

We do not need anything more than a good filter (stock is very good "clean"), but if one needs to have different one, racingline (bad history) or whoever sells the the same filter rebranded (revo?) go for it. Reusable, in the long run, is cheaper, and keep most of the crap out.
Or, get a K&N (wish aFe had one), it's cheaper and just as good if not better than the above.

I would take a new one, lay it on top of a clean cloth or paper towel, and use compressed air to blow off excess oil down and onto the cloth, carefully, not to damage it or it's filtration capability. I know we do not have a MAF, but it does not help with easier breathing, initially.

Be careful using a rubber plug, the heat from the turbo & exhaust is very close. I used some high heat tape, multiple layers then a hose clamp to keep it from coming off. I was afraid a rubber plug would melt off.
