    K04 Dilemma/K03

Our A4 2012 has 63,000 miles on it. The Turbo has malfunctioned and needing to be replaced per Dealer (code P0299). Unfortunately since the ECU was flagged, I am on able to receive a new turbo under the 70K, 7 year extended warranty. (BS in my opinion).

Currently on stage II APR, innercooler downpipe. The dilemma Iím having, the dealer is coming down on the price to $2700 for K03 installed labor out the door.

Or I can pay $2900 for the K04 and another $500 for install through authorized APR dealer. Is the extra $700 worth it?

Also is the Tiptronic transmission sufficient for the K04?

Itís my wifeís car, so she doesnít care either way.

    Thoughts?

Do the K04. Itís stage 2 but all the way to red line. Extends the happy zone 2000rpm in every gear.

Your trans will be fine, the torque is about the same as stage 2 until you run race gas.

At that price id 100% do the k04. You can get a brand new oem k03 for $950

    https://www.europaparts.com/turbocha...SABEgLvBvD_BwE

It takes 6 hours for a complete imbecile like me to install the turbocharger. The apr dealership is only charging you 500 for k04 install.

The dealership is absolutely raping you on the price then. Theyre getting $1800 for labor.

Any good mechanic can swap the turbo within 4 to 6 hours and more on the 4 hour side if they're familiar with audis and have done it before.

Well, damn I wasn't aware of the K03 @ $950 price point. I'm fairly mechanical, so I thought about doing the install myself; but $500 is not bad for labor.

If I go the K03 route, do I need to reprogram the ecu for the new turbo or would it be a straight drop in? @bhvrdr, thanks for the info on that.....

K04 end of discussion. Not even a hard choice. 8 speed auto started in 2012 I think too so youíre good. The 6 speed sucks

Possible the APR tune+install is $500? That's a bargain for turbo labor.

I'm at about 92k and just threw a P0299 as well. Checked and replaced the DV as a first step, it was already the D/piston version so that wasn't the issue. I just had the IC off to replace the chains/tensioners/guides, so its possible I have a plumbing leak. Going to do a boost leak test with my smoke machine next. Then check for waste gate arm wiggle. I'd like to rule everything else out before yanking the turbo. And maybe do some data logging of requested/actual charge pressures with the VAGCOM. It doesn't really feel low on boost. I'm guessing it should top out at about 16-17psi?

I'm going to stay K03, as this is my kids car. My dilemma is IHI or Borg Warner. I'm inclined to stay with the IHI unless someone can offer me a good reason to go BW.

Yeah I'd do the K04, it's a no brainer. Also the ZF8 is one of the best auto transmissions ever invented, so you'll be fine.

My 6AT was fine with 160k miles of APR Stg1, 2 and K04 before I ended up doing the 6MT swap. And it doesnít have extra oil lines to the radiator.

I'd say get the K04 as well. What an opportunity to get one. I've heard nothing but fun things. Haven't taken the time yet to look into the failures with them. There's a good K04 Follow Up thread on AZ somewhere as well.
There's also something nice about a good, reliable, stock Audi that's been kept in great condition inside and out.

I'm interested in that this thread turns out to be though.

I was reading on the K04 DIY, that I can drive the car on stock mode to the shop for them to reprogram the ecu and it will not hurt the engine. Is this true?

Yep. No problem at all. What you should not do is to install a K04 with K03 stage 1 or stage 2 tuning and drive it aggressively. That can lead to an overboost condition.

I drove mine on stage 2 tune for a few days. Already felt a significant difference from the KO3. Its just a better turbo all around and unlike what some people have said about losing torque relative to the stage 2, I have to disagree. Torque feels the same, but theres no fall on your face past 3.5k/4k in the redline.

If you decide to install (and having aftermarket cat helps with this) be very careful of taking off the heat shield allen bolt that sits right above the turbo manifold. I stripped mine despite my caution and wow that was a bitch to drill out.
Feel free to PM me, i did this install about 3 weeks ago.

lol, this is good advice. I stripped one too and i embarrassingly ended up bending the crap out of the heat shield and ripping at it until it came off lol.
