Clicking sound, is this fuel pump related?

I own a 2004 A4 Avant w/ 50K miles. Of recent onset and only when the engine is running is a repetitive clicking sound (1 -2 times per second) that appears to be emanating from the large piece of plastic (gas tank?) that is just to the left of the catalytic converter. When I'm underneath the car and press on the plastic, the clicking tends to decrease somewhat, but when pressure is released, resumes. (I'm thinking fuel pump incipient failure mode?) OBD-2 yields no codes....yet.

Have you encountered this symptom? Thoughts as to what to investigate b4 I hand it over to the pros?

    Thanks in advance.

Petrol? Possibly the fuel evaporation system working.

I misidentified the location. The mechanic told me that what I was thinking was the catalytic converter was actually the secondary muffler.

By the time I arrived at the shop, the clicking ceased. He did verify there is a fuel pump in the gas tank, but had never had to replace one before and never heard the sound emanating from the gas tank either. Guess I should consider myself lucky that it stopped, but what happens when the fuel pump fails? Exactly!

The thought expressed by caluma4x4 that the evaporation system makes that sort of sound is intriguing. In 50K miles, I have never heard anything like it. Guess I should worry less and drive more.

1.8T or 3.0? Can you post a picture of where it sounds like the noise is coming from?
