    Gas cover fell off!

Wtf?? I went to put gas into my 2016 s4 this morning and when I pushed on the gas door too open it the whole cover came off! The mechanism behind the cover is still there but the outside part the makes it look like the car just fell into the ground. Has anyone else had this happen?

So the hinge assembly is still attached to the car body, including the portion of the hinge that the fuel door cover is attached to? The hinge part that swings out has the fuel requirement sticker on it. If so then you're saying that the fuel door cover popped off, and that the hinge assembly is still intact.

The cover has a plastic piece attached to it that allows it to snap onto the hinge, from what I can tell. Here's a pic from the ECS Tuning site, that shows the inside of the fuel door cover (Part #8K0809907GRU) that has the attachment piece. Does the inside of your fuel door cover have this piece on the inside? Does it look like any of the plastic tabs have broken off? I've read other threads where guys' wives have forgotten to remove a fuel nozzle from the car and started driving off, resulting in the fuel door cover breaking off. At any rate, if the tabs on your door are still intact, it may just require being slid back onto the hinge portion. Please update us with what you find!

Edit to add a couple more pics showing the tabs on the inside of the fuel filler door cover ...

Literally just experienced this for the first time today in 18 months. Popped open the fuel door to dry off inside after washing and the outer painted part of the fuel door slid right off while the hinge/bracket stayed in place.

Luckily I caught it in the towel. It slid right back on, but it doesn't seem very secure.

If it's that loose that it can be easily slid off the hinge, and none of the attachments (either on the door or the mating ones on the hinge) appear to be broken, then perhaps adding a piece of electrical tape over one or two of the tabs will tighten up the fit enough to keep the cover on.

I actually thought about a few small dabs of a silicone sealant. It would take up any wiggle room but still removable with a little bit of effort.

Excellent idea! Should stand up to moisture and temperature changes.

I am the second owner. No accident history.

Yeah. That is the part that fell off. A couple of the tabs on the top are broken. I slid it back on the hinge assembly and it is a bit loose but it should stay. I went to the dealership and they said they will replace the part. Luckily I am still under the original warranty so it will be covered but the new part has to be painted and everything so it will take a while to get it back to normal.

mine has popped off in the past, it slides back in, don't try to pop it back in. I forget if it slides front-to-back or back-to-front but give it a shot.

I've had mine pop off while applying wax with a buffer. The pressure from the buffer can cause the lid to open and if you don't see if pop open a small amount the next pass of the buffer can send the door to the ground. First time it happen I was like the hell, did I just break the fuel door off. As others said just put it back on and your good to go, hopefully without any scratches from it hitting the ground.

Can the tabs on the back of the cover be bent inward a little bit to provide a tighter fit onto the hinge mechanism?

Not to jack the thread, but has anybody had the drain hole plug up inside the gas fill door? After I wash the car, I have to soak up up water around the filler neck. Looks like a drain hole there, and wondering if I can run something flexible down it.

Yes to this, in fact when I bought the car it was plugged so much that I thought it was a design flaw in the car. I had to vacuum the water out, then like a month later it must have dislodged and I was like “Holy Shit” that makes a lot more sense lol. I also knocked the gas door cover off one day filling up, thank goodness it snapped back on with no issues 6-7 months later.
