Alternative to ecs tuning for timing belt kit?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Now that I have some time to work on my car before classes begin in the fall, I'm trying to do all the maintenance things I was not able to do right after getting it last year. One of those maintenance things is a new timing belt, because the guy I bought it from said it was a timing chain, and didnt need to be replaced, but thats not the case.

The belt looks in good condition, but theres a coolant leak in the front of the engine which I'm guessing to be the water pump. Since most of the timing belt kits come with a replacement water pump, I figured I'd tackle 2 birds with one stone by getting one of those kits, but since I'm in Canada the shipping for ecs tuning is a bit ridiculous. I was just wondering weather any of you good folks would know of a good alternative to ecs, and maybe have done a timing belt replacement and can recommend a good kit for me to buy.

What’s wrong with buying from your local Audi dealership?

I’ve never bought a timing belt kit aftermarket, and l’ve never had any issues with the quality, buying direct from Audi either.

There are dealers in Canada that can get ECS stuff. I'm from NS but now live in Ontario and I've dealt with EuroSport Tuning anytime I want ECS stuff. Its always been a pleasant experience. They will give you a quote and then you don't need to worry about customs/brokerage and all that stuff. I would send them an email and ask for a quote on what you're after.

Another good alternative is Rockauto.com I've used them for parts also and they will give you a price that includes customs/brokerage so that there are no hidden fee's.

I've never gone to the dealer for things I can get else ware. For example at RockAuto, injectors for my car were $60ish bucks, where as the dealer wanted $197 each. When there's 8 it adds up. Also when they arrived they were the same manufacture as the OEM as well as the same box as the OEM. Audi didn't make the injectors nor are they going to make the parts for your timing belt service. They buy from suppliers and if you can order the same parts else ware for a fraction of the price, why not.

Litens timing belt kit (Blauparts; comes with updated tensioner) with a Hepu water pump. This combo has served me well for the past 10-15k miles.

Yeah, thats generally why I look elsewhere first before the dealership for parts. I generally have the time, and don't see the point in paying 2x as much or more for convenience.
I'll have a look at Eurosport and Rock auto. I have a suspicion I already bought stuff from rockauto for my old car because the name sounds familiar.

This You most definitely want to go with the new style tensioner. It's way better than the old style damper.

That the one you're talking about? Guessing the length of the current serpentine belt on the car should be labeled on the belt itself

Concept 1 in Calgary sells the Hepu kits for a decent price last I checked. No Litens tensioner obviously, but shipping should be reasonable within Canada unlike ordering from ECS.

You have to be careful checking what ECS puts in the kits. I bought one and it had a P.O.S. Uro tensioner included. Bloody thing failed within 28,000 km. Timing jumped two teeth by the time I figured it out. Almost cost me a head rebuild. This was on a transverse 1.8t so doing the job again within a year was not fun. No service position on the Mk4 VW... Every time I think of buying from ECS I think of that job and purchase elsewhere. I have a $100 gift card that has been sitting on my desk for months. Odds of me using it aren't good. Re-gifting it to my bro this Christmas I think.

Find a place in Canada that can get this- 5300546100, that is the PN for the updated INA/Litens timing kit. They're pretty cheap down here in the states.

I kind of put my own together. I used all NTN products for the damper, roller, and tensioner. This brand is the OEM supplier. For the water pump I went with a genuine Audi. There's been a lot of controversy on whether or not a metal impeller water pump is better or worse than the polymer. I see pros and cons of each. Biggest thing with the metal impeller aftermarket pumps isn't so much with the impeller but rather the bearing. My reasoning for going with OEM is my original pump lasted over 100K (yes I know I should never go this long to do a TB service but I got lucky). Pump was still in perfect working condition. Also if the impeller on the OEM bump breaks there's a better chance it wont take out the engine as the plastic pieces will just break apart and the cog gear will keep spinning. Your gauge cluster will alert you if the engine temp starts to get too warm due to improper flow. So both those fail safes seemed logical and less risky than if a metal pump bearing seized which is going to kill the motor or if a piece of slag from hardened coolant or a mineral deposit gets caught in the impeller and locks it up vs breaking the plastic. This is just my opinion, and seemed most logical and the lesser evil of both options.

I'm hearing a lot of recommendations for the litens timing belt kit from Blauparts. Also good to know about how the tensioner was updated, as I was unaware of this.
The actuall timing belt replacement, shoudnt be too bad as I've taken the bumper off several times, and the service position is just a few more steps after that.

I have got the last 4 timing belts kits from Blauparts 2 of them being on my 1.8t. after 75k the first one looked like new still and no play in the water pump.
Never argue with an idiot, they'll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I just piece the "Litens kit" together myself. Here's what you need:

    1. The belt. This part is not any different. I like the Gates Racing Belt for the 1.8T (part# T306RB).
    2. The Litens Tensioner roller. This is the star of the show. (part# 06A109243A)
    3. Aluminum "holder" with small roller (part# 06A109181)
**3 ALTERNATE: You don't really need that special holder. It's expensive and silly. You can just leave your hydraulic unit in place. It will do nothing other than block the hole in the timing covers and allow a place for the small roller to bolt to.
**3 ALTERNATE: You'll want a new little roller, too. It comes with a new bolt. (part# 06B109244)
    4. Whatever water pump you want.

    So here's my shopping list for a 2001.5 thru 2005 A4 1.8T Litens "kit":
